Is the Comic Canon?

Joss says the Buffy season 8 comic is Buffyverse canon. The general vibe I'm picking up is most fans accept this.

There appears to be a disgruntled few out there however who disagree.

OK, so here's my question then. If Buffy season 8 is not canon, why not? What are the rules of canon in your eyes? Must it be TV with the original cast? If so would it be OK if Fox assigned a different crew to run the project? Must it be both original cast and crew. If they had done TV movies of Buffy characters as they were proposing at one time, would that be canon? If the series, by some miracle, came back would that be canon, or is it just the original series? Would a movie with Joss at the helm and the original cast be canon? What if the only change they made was to recast Buffy, would that be canon?

To me, it's canon if the creator says it truly describes the fates of the characters in the world that he created - and it doesn't actually defy narrative logic, directly conflict with what has preceded it. (But right there, you open up the whole retcon can of worms, so even that is probably not a valid qualifier.)

Medium really is the only point of contention I see. Some people hate comics and don't feel Season 8 does justice to the Buffyverse or whatever. If canon must exist in only one medium, then say goodbye to Season 8...

I guess Joss could theoretically create a Season 8 haiku style or with macaroni art or act it out as a one man show in front of a webcam and post it on youtube.
 
I don't get why some people don't think it's canon either, besides their dislike of comic books. If I could pick a medium for season 8 it would be a tv show, but I'll take what I can get and Fray has made me enjoy comic books for the first time... apart from when I was 9 reading Richie Rich that came free with a pizza hut meal (and actually the pizza was better then the comic).
The bottom line is if the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer says it's canon, then it's canon. Fact.
 
I don't understand how someone could say it isn't cannon. All it takes for it to be Cannon is for Joss to say it is. Like he could get every single person who worked on the show to come back to continue the series and all the stuff that happened in the comic will still have happened so... you either accept is as actual buffy-fact or you are missing a bit in the time line!

Well, I am not going to argue it as a non-canon but the fact that it is not widespread (the comic is not published in Europe) lessens the importance of it because majority of the fans can't have an access to it (the new media). Moreover, it is not fair.

Hmm. Yeah, it's a pain, I'm sure...but even if you didn't have Internet access and you're a thousand miles from the nearest comic book shop, you can still order comic books the old fashioned way...via mailed, printed catalogs. That's actually what I've been doing lately. Or order by phone. But yeah, people would have to dig a little to find the info without a computer.

I'm scratching my head a little at the phrase the "majority of fans can't have access to it".

Isn't the comic available in specialty shops in Europe the day after the NA release. Did I hear that wrong? I would imagine in most such shops you can have them hold a copy, and they'll pre-order it. It's also available by subscription through multiple methods. So where is this "majority" figure coming from?

In North America you have to wait a year to see Doctor Who, and even then in the US you need to subscribe to the correct cable package. Is that more fair? Personally I think it's more a case of these things happen, and if you're a true fan you try to find a way around it.

Nevertheless we're both agreed this all has nothing to do with canon correct?
 
Whats this about it not being in Europe! Eh hello --> In Ireland<--- and I got it in my local comic book shop, It comes out 1 day after the American release. Like issue 2 was released today in America (4/4/07) In Europe it will be out tomorrow (5/4/07) and I'm damn sure any comic book shop in europe will have issues of it!
 
Yeah it's released a day or two after the US date down here as well >.> Although I suppose if you don't like comics or don't have a computer then you might have no clue about it... but isn't it something like 1/9 people who don't have a computer or access to the internet in developed countries? And if you do have one, chances are you do, then if you're a Buffy fan you would hear about it and be able to order it.
 
I care for the characters and would love to see what's going on with their lives but I like season 8 the way it is now maybe in the future it'll turn to TV or Movies
 
Joss says it's canon....boom, it's canon. That's it for me. Has nothing to do with the medium the story's being told in. It's still a story and that's what matters to me. It could be a book, a movie, or macaroni art....I don't care.
