Okay, gang, here's what I do know...While the network hasn't said to me that they won't order more episodes, it sure does shake out that way. On Thursday they needed to extend their options on the cast and decided not to. Considering it would have been chump change for them, it basically means we're done.

I'm not ready to start hawking the 13 episode DVD set -- because I'm hoping it's gonna be a 15 episode set, including the two, you counted right, TWO! unaired pilots.

I'm pretty convinced the same thing that happened with a lot of the non-believers here with Wonderfalls and Firefly will happen if they get a chance to see the full 13 (well, 15).

I'm told by the network that they're "still supporting the show" and that we will continue to air. Which, if my experience tells me anything, means catch it while you can. If you wanna, I mean. I'm gonna make my bet right now that we'll have, not including any unaired pilots, six unaired episodes featured on that DVD set.

When I spoke to one my cast members about this, he offered that I must "be crushed." I'm not. This is pretty much what I expected, which doesn't mean I didn't pour every bit of energy, time and care I had into 13 episodes for the last year. I never consider it a waste of time. Or a waste of, well, their money. DVDs have changed a lot. If I end up being some little Americanized BBC, churning out limited series for DVD, and the people who employ me want to keep handing over 20 or 30 million dollars for me to do that, then I'll be perfectly content. There's something nice about being able to go from a hard drinking space western to a hard drinking whimsical comedy to a hard drinking abyss peering noir...

Wow, that sucks.
I mean not that I was screaming from the rooftops that the show was amazing, but it didn't suck. It's a lot better than 90% of what's on the air currently, and I had planned to watch it and see if it hooked me. It's a damn shame they cancel good shows before they get to build a fan base. Imagine if they had canceled Buffy half way through the first season.. We wouldn't even be here.
Here's hoping it gets nabbed by another network.
 
Gotta feel sorry for Tim really, hes come to a point where he expects his shows to last about 13 episodes.
 
I loved that show.

Still...somehow, it doesn't bother me if The Inside becomes another 13 epper. I expected it.

Not everyone gets Tim Minear's stuff right away, and Fox isn't the network that will stick with a show long enough for people used to less challenging fare to make the connection to his stuff.

And so The Inside joins Firefly, and Wonderfalls as another cancelled, Minear-run, 13 episode, TV classic. Oh well. I can hardly wait for the next one.

Some day Tim's Fox Contract will run out, then hopefully things will be different. He's a guy that really needs to be on cable.

I didn't not like it because it was challenging, I thought it was formulaic and over dramatic, and I didn't care about any of the characters.
 
What's the failure rate for shows, 80%? Plus, a summer show, maybe not a good time for heavy drama, not sure. I will say it seemed kinda dated to me, like 10 years old or so. Seems like new series have to be splashy "events" to grab interest quickly: Lost, Desperate Housewives....there's no time for a show to grow into something great anymore, not on the big networks.

American movie receipts are way way down. Worst since 1985. Maybe TV is suffering in the same way this year. The low point in a cycle or something...
 
I saw the episode with the elementary school children. I thought it was all right, but I guess I wasn't fully into it. I do like the freaky typography credits however. And I still have another episode "tivo-ed" so I'll watch that one when I get the chance.
 
Tim needs to join an existing show, he clearly isnt' leader/creator material. Being a good writer and being a good creator aren't always the same thing. The Inside was bland and uninspired, with no likeable characters, crappy camerawork, lighting and a waste of the talents of talented writers.
 
I think it may be harder to come in as a "show doctor" to try and rework a lousy concept. Tim maybe would have done better if he'd had total conceptual, creative, casting control. Something he's passionate about personally. But how often is that gonna happen?
