Is The Slayer Stronger Than Vampires?

I don't think there's any harm in WA proposing his theory. He's backed it up in a way that makes sense to him. If you don't see it, that's fine! Like I said, I don't even agree with it...but I don't get why we can't entertain the thought!

Well, that's fine for a disinterested third party to say, but, frankly, I think that I've put up with more than any civilized man should have to without exacting some degree of satisfaction. This may be an extreme solution for a honorable man to make, but I feel that I am left with no choice.

BEG, I am offering you the chance to meet me face to face, winner take all, and let God decide just who is right. You have the choice of weapons as the challenged party, and the choice of location. You name it, and I'll be there, assuming that you're man enough to accept the challenge.

You name the place, and I'll meet you there. Just keep in mind, I'm an old man, and I don't move as fast as I used to be, so it may take me awhile to reach the designated Field Of Honor.

But you go ahead and get there, and get ready for the fight of your life. You just wait for me there. I promise, I'm on the way, and I'll get there as quickly as I can.

You just go there and wait for me.

Unless you're scared.

LOL is that you Olaf? I for one enjoyed your imaginative suggestions. Albeit I don't totally agree.
What a twitter, how to answer a question without having given an answer.
the questions asked seem to be:
Is Buffy stronger than Spike.
Can Buffy lift Olaf's hammer because she(Buffy) defeated him.

Now I regard Jane Espenson as an intelligent person,
so I think her answer should be viewed as such.

Quote: "I thought she was strong"
It does not say Buffy is stronger than Spike, it does not say Buffy is stronger than anyone, it says I thought she was strong and that is all it says.
Quote: "but that was a long time ago"
That could mean, I can't remember. It could mean that she is working on another project right now that probably has a deadline.

Would you like to be my second in the upcoming duel? Assuming BEG doesn't chicken out. of course.
Well, BEG, that's the beauty of interpretation! 😀 And, to be totally technical, there isn't anything in the show backing up the idea that it's specifically because of Buffy's strength that she can wield the hammer for an extended period of time and Spike can't -- other than the fact that Spike picked it up briefly and then dropped it, something that whiteavenger's theory accounts for. I think you're examining this issue too rigidly -- it's just an idea, it's a theory, it's fun.

And keep in mind that Jane Espenson, as closely as she worked on the show and the episode in question, is but one person offering her own interpretation as to why Buffy could lift the hammer.

The cool thing about art (which I believe Buffy to be) is that we have the ability to take things from it others may not. We can make connections specific to ourselves, to our experiences, to our knowledge, and form deductions that others may or may not agree with. Without these personal interpretations, Buffy'd be boring. I certainly don't want Joss or Jane telling me what to think -- I'd rather figure that stuff out for myself! Don't get me wrong -- Joss and co's input is very important, to a degree, but it's not the end-all-be-all when it comes to totally minor things like the "rules" surrounding Olaf's hammer. At least not for me!

I'm not sure that made ANY sense...but yeah! I don't think there's any harm in WA proposing his theory. He's backed it up in a way that makes sense to him. If you don't see it, that's fine! Like I said, I don't even agree with it...but I also don't get why we can't entertain the thought!

I dont know, to me this is everything wrong with fandoms on the internet. I mean the show shows the hammer as too heavy for Spike, Its shows it's too heavy for a counter top, Spike is able to move it, but not strong enough to lift it (unlike any other mythological weapons which is were the original idea came from and no one seems to take as a point), It makes a huge heavy clang noise when it hits the floor to indicate it's heavy, Buffy who should be, and is shown to be, stronger can lift it no problem, from the shooting script "He moves to pick it up - strains under the weight and sets it back down." Not he can't lift it, but he strains under the weight of it, cuz it's to heavy, and a writer from the show basically backs it up.
The only thing going against all that is it's held on what looks like wooden shelves, and that's enough to turn an entire argument?

There is far more evidence to back up this being a strength issue then a magical one, and I dont see it as a fair argument when it's basically just to defend one characters strength over the main characters. Especially when it's something with overwhelming evidence in favor of an answer.

Well, that's fine for a disinterested third party to say, but, frankly, I think that I've put up with more than any civilized man should have to without exacting some degree of satisfaction. This may be an extreme solution for a honorable man to make, but I feel that I am left with no choice.

I'm good thanks, I prefer to finish it in the argument. Also I doubt they'd let you bring all your "I love Spike" memorabilia I assume you carry with you at all times... 🙂

But I asked why could she lift the hammer becasue she was string or becasue she defeated Olaf, and the answer was "I thought she was strong" - which means she believes Buffy can lift the hammer becasue she is strong not because she defeated Olaf.
Spike can't lift the the hammer, so if Buffy can becasue of strength that would indicate she's stronger then Spike.
The "But that was a long time ago" basically means to the best of my memory, she probably doesn't obsess over the the show like we tend to do, so probably hasn't watched Triangle in a while so there might be a line in there that indicates otherwise (there isn't I looked through the script before continuing the argument)

I knew it all along. Pure poultry, right to the core. No strength in your convictions.

And all that I have in the way of Buffy memorabilia is a bright red "Friends Don't Let Friends Ship Bangel" tee shirt.

It might be another situation like the scythe:

Non tibi est. Ei solae tractare licet.

"It is not for thee. It is for her alone to wield."

Seriously, Buffy's fights with vampires indicate speed and agility rather than strength because her optimum technique would be entirely different if strength was her main advantage. She wouldn't need to vault over vampires or use speed and finesse like she does - she could just throw them up in the air and stake them as they came down if strength was the issue. If she had that strength, it would be the safer method of doing away with a vampire.

The display of strength is quite uneven - her battles with the Turok-Han indicate that it would be almost impossible for her to use strength as her main technique. She almost gats staked in "Fool for Love" 5ABB07, so either her strength is quite variable or she can have a bad day.

The very fact you have turned away from arguing the points to make jokes convey exactly that. So keep your personal remarks aimed at me to yourself thanks.

As far as the whole Buffy was able to stop Doc and Spike couldn't, how anti-climatctic would that have been for the episode? Spike gets up the tower stops Doc, Dawn doesn't bleed, disastor averted Buffy not having to sacrifice herself. Clearly Spike had to be beaten by Doc for the episode to play out how they wanted it doesn't mean he couldn't have beaten Doc in other circumstances.

Also are we arguing that Slayer's in general are stronger than vampires or Buffy is stronger than vampires? Because as far as Slayers go I always figured Buffy was just really good at what she did, a Slayer prodigy or something.

Also anybody who said Buffy's abilities are affected by her emotions I agree 100% because all of these arguments can be explained by that. Buffy picking up Olaf's Hammer: She was fired up about fighting Glory and saving Dawn. Buffy used her anger to fuel her fighting she explains that to Kendra.

I've never understood this way of arguing, when your discussing something like this, you can't really use the show as the reason, there is no point in having a discussion if this is the answer. Also there is nothing to back it up, Doc was clearly powerful, he survived a sword to the chest, he wanted to open the portal for no reason and his body wasn't around Spikes on the ground, so he's arguably still alive. Spike isn't the strongest of characters, there's no reason Doc couldn't have been stronger then him.

Agreed. What's on the show is what's on the show, for better or worse.

Sure, that's a little hard to swallow at times, but it is what it is. I mean, take S2 for instance. Everyone always talks about how Buffy beat Angelus, and she did, but I found myself more than once saying "well, she won, yeah, but only because Angelus beat himself. He had her so cold so many times, the only reason he didn't win is because of his own arrogance". But, thinking about it, that's what happened. He WAS arrogant, and it did cost him. Sure, you can argue that if Spike and Doc fought one-on-one in perfect conditions that things may have gone a different way, but they didn't. They happened the way they did, and Spike lost. It's hard to say he would have done better under different circumstances because he DID lose.

Ugh, just re-read that and it's a bit rambly. Sorry.

The slayer must necessarily be stronger than the vampires. Is a kind of natural law to compensate for the strong numerical disparity. There is only one slayer, against a multitude of vampires. She must be stronger than them.

I think in the context of this episode that argument is valid. The fact that Spike gets beaten by Doc and Buffy is able to just toss him off the edge shows a character flaw in Doc making the situation inconsistent. If you look at the episode School Hard, Spike has Buffy on the ground ready for a quick kill, if not for Joyce's intervention we can assume she'd be dead. This in itself should prove that Buffy and Spike are similar in fighting ability and strength. The only real reason why Doc beat Spike was for plot convenience in my opinion. Had the finale of the season not been resting on specific events playing out I don't see why Spike would not be able to beat Doc. Thats just my observation of it, I obviously have no idea if Doc is really stronger or not.

By bringing up the scene in "School Hard," you might have offered the best solution as to why Doc could so easily beat Spike. I think that a major factor in Buffy almost losing her first fight with Spike was over confidence on the Slayer's part. The vast majority of the vampires who she had encountered up to then, Luke and the Master from Season 1, and possibly the one that claimed to be at the Crucifixion being the only exceptions that come to mind, were little more than fledgelings and minions, certainly nothing to compare to a master vampire with the experience and abilities of Spike. In their first fight, Buffy greatly underestimated him, and it almost cost her her life.

Likewise, Spike had already easily beaten, and, he thought, killed Doc once before, so maybe he underestimated just how dangerous Doc actually was. By the time Buffy arrived on the scene, she was keyed up, no doubt focused on saving her sister, and god help the demon or demigod who got in her way. It was basically a reenactment of the "Oh, look. A bad guy" scene from Season 1. A vampire got in Buffy's way in her trying to reach her objective, so she destroyed him. That's basically what happened to Doc.

But it isn't inconsistent at all, I dont see how a "Well it's just part of the show" can ever be used as part of an argument when your debating something in the show, it's like bringing something not related into the argument, becasue it may be the answer, but it can't be a point in a debate about something in show. Does that make sense?

It's like saying that if Buffy died she couldn't come back, it's impossible, but the show is named Buffy the Vampire Slayer so she has to come back - that is correct, but in a debate about that, it's irrelevant, the answer is; it is possible but you need a really powerful witch to bring her back. The fact the show is named BtVS is irrelevant, the fact that in the show Willow was able to bring Buffy back makes it possible within the universe of the show.

Or another example is saying Buffy is actually the weakest slayer ever, but she had to keep winning becasue the show is name BtVS, the fact it's a show shouldn't really be a valid argument within the show as it's the answer to everything and makes discussions irrelevant.

Likewise, Spike had already easily beaten, and, he thought, killed Doc once before,

This didn't happen at all. In the scene, Doc jumps past Spike faster then Spike can turn around. Doc then punches him across the room, pins Xander to a wall with his tongue, goes over to Spike who's lying on the floor (still reeling from the punch it seems), kicks him in the face knocking him down and that kick keeps him down while Doc has time to get the box and chuck it in the fire. Xander then tackles him to the floor and stabs him with the sword.

Spike did nothing to Doc, doesn't get any hits in, so if anything the scene establishes Docs stronger then Spike

My mistake. Spike sees Doc and is so overcome with terror at facing such a superior fighter that he turns to run away, trips, and falls off of the tower.

Or, maybe, Spike figures that, now that he knows how Doc fights, and since Xander could kill him, he, himself shouldn't have any trouble beating him in the rematch. That's why he spends so much time talking instead of attacking immediately. And, once again, that self assurance, false though it might be, results in the overconfidence that gets him beaten for the second time.

Of course, that's just me trying to make Spike out to be much better a person than he actually is.

Alright I understand what you mean Black Eye Guy. I'm not sure why this argument switched to a Doc Vs. Spike argument in the first place lol. Its a Buffy vs. Vampires argument right? There are a bunch of instances that support that Spike can at least keep up at the same caliber as Buffy. But it must vary between newer vampires and older vampires.

Canon has established that Slayers are stronger than vampires on at least a few occasions. In the first season of Angel when he is trying to help Faith, Buffy confronts Angel and the two exchange blows:

Buffy: "You hit me!"
Angel: "Not to go all schoolyard but you hit me first, and you're a bit stronger!"

Note that Angel's sarcastic tone when he says that Buffy is just "a bit" stronger is clearly meant to suggest that she is more than "a bit" stronger.

Another example is in season 5 of Buffy. In one episode Spike tries to lift the troll hammer and can't do so. In a later episode, Anya suggests using it to fight Glory. Spike begins to say that it's too heavy to wield, but quickly shuts up when Buffy easily lifts it with one hand!

So yeah, this isn't even debatable. Angel and Spike are stronger than most vampires and Buffy is clearly stronger than them.
