Is The Slayerverse now in the hands of the fans?

This topic just isn't about the Angel cancellation, this touches on the whole universe that I have come to love as a whole. And that's a universe and franchise that is on the brink of dieing, at least on television for the time being. And I guess you can say that Joss could go and plan other ME spinoffs and movies, but that means he'll need all his actors and writers to commit to those things. And to be honest, just because the fans want to the universe continue, it has been proven that money and ratings are more powerful than a strong fan base. We can't rely on ME to continue to keep on chronicling the universe and lives of our favorite characters. Most people who work on a franchise like this, get tired of the same characters and concepts all the time. I would imagine at some point, they would just want to move on, despite what the fans think.

So, this is my question, is it time for the fans of the slayerverse to take the universe and characters into their own hands? Because WE are what kept the series going for so many years and seems only fair that we keep it alive with whatever resources us the fans have to offer. Should we be the ones to continue the universe (keep in mind that I do know about the copyright law and all those other things)? This goes beyond fan fic and virtual seasons. I'm talking about a big group of fans getting together and deciding where the whole universe and characters go from here. And not just focusing on the future but keeping in check of what has happened in the future. And I mean this will need a HUGE group of fans, writers, historians, and of course website designers. Is it really stepping over our bounds by helping keep the universe going by creating our own stories and developments for the characters so other generations to come don't miss out on a great franchise like Buffy/Angel?

Honestly, this might be radical thinking, but Buffy is the only television show I have really gotten myself into to and I just think there are so many stories to be told not just about the characters we know but in the whole universe. So I'll restate the question, should a reasonable minded large group of fans get together and continue the universe where Joss is leaving off?
 
I don't think it would work, there are too many different people, with too many different views. You'll need a Joss, and offcourse, every fan wants to be him.
 
Even though I think it's a great idea, and I know how you feel, it would be nearly impossible to get all the fans to agree on one decision for the Slayerverse. Unless you created such an amazing website/community, with such a strong following, that whatever you say, goes. There are many sites out there who's maintainers have been nearly immortalized amongst its visitors. So, there's always that chance.

Another way of going about deciding the fate of the characters, etc., might be something like this: You propose a handful of ideas. Fans vote on which, if any, they like. You take the top two or three voted on concepts and discuss them amongst a Watchers Council of sorts - educated, serious, trustworthy fans who help you run the thing. From there, the Council would try to come up with an unanimous decision. If it's too close to call, or the topic becomes heated, the headhoncho of the operation could choose to make her/his own informed decision, based off the input given. Then, once the final word is given, the news is posted to the internet, and fanfics, fanmovies, whatever can go from there.

Well, true, fans, especially the creative ones, due tend to bicker alot and everyone will want their ideas told. But here's sort of what I envision:

It would start out as just a Buffy dedicated website, basically an up to date database on the characters and events of The Slayerverse. It would have episode guides, season guides, character profiles (on almost every character in both series) and pics and stuff and of course message boards. Basically more or less, the site would at first establish everything that has happened in the past. The person who starts the site would more or less be the Joss, but only more as an executive producer who greenlights and red lights ideas. Once a simple fan base has been found, the first project to continue the universe will happen. The one is charge will decide a small crew to begin working on the online version of I guess a "buffy" tv movie, more of a trial run than anything. The executive producer will choose one person from that group to be the Joss for that project. Than if that goes over well, then the first virtual season will be produced, it would of course be Angel season 6. The executive producer will choose another Joss for this role, the decisions of that season are up to the joss in charge of the seasons and the crew of writers and aides that joss wants. Anything can be be given the redlight by the executive producer, but more or less it's up to the Joss where the season will go and what happens to the characters. Then once that virtual season is aired, the executive producer will choose yet another Joss to run a virtual spinoff, again, the choices of this season are up to the Joss in charge. After those two are releashed, the fans can start request mini projects like little fan fiction or whatever to also help with the preserving of the universe. But of course everything will be red lighted or greenlighted by the guy, actualy by that point the group in charge, because there really shouldn't be one person saying yes and no, it should be a group who talks about what the Joss's can or cannot do.
 
Something I've always wanted to do is somehow centralize the whole Jossverse fandom. There's like a gazillion different message boards and websites, but I wish there could just be one big one, so everyone would be together.
 
It's a cool idea, but it would be very unorganized and nearly impossible to do. To get these people together, to work everything out. As much as I like the idea, I don't see it working out very well, at least not for long. But someone could still try to make it happen.
 
I don't see why it would come to that, Dark Horse is still making Buffy comics, and there are still novels.
