Is TV art?

Hey I was just browsing through google for buffy articles and i found this article:
It's pointless to spend much time wrestling with the question of whether TV can be art (of course it can be and often isn't). But there have been many days when, after a particularly potent "Buffy" episode, I've found myself feeling vaguely off my game, my mind clouded with a gauzy, muted sense of dread. When a show jostles your equilibrium to the point of haunting your days or robbing you of sleep, when it finds a place in your imagination that also rubs, hard, at the core of who you think you really are, it starts to look like something more than what we simply call TV.
I feel like saying "well duh" to that, it seems a no-brainer to me that some TV is definitely art. But then I've been preaching that for years. Anyone who has watched Buffy or Homicide or any number of good shows knows this. Sometimes even okay shows have the occasional brilliant episode.

Anyway, the rest of the piece is good. Good to hear people publicly acknowledge TV as art in any event. Should not be read if you haven't watched this season of Buffy (including the finale).

and i was just wondering whether people think TV is art or that it is artistic if you get what i mean, i cant decided i mean there are some episodes in programmes ike buffy which are , in my opinion art, e.g. amends but there are others (not on buffy) which are just crap and are no where near art, so what do you think, TV, is it art or artistic?

It's like everything, art just like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are some shows out there that are pure art the best example of this I have to say is The Body. It is television, but at the same time it's pure art. Ok this wasn't so simple as I thought....Ok let's look at it from another perspective, What is art?

For me art is something that I can related to and that makes me feel something and often I want to put the word beautiful into all of it. And often art have to be visual, but I don't know if everyone agress with that.

Back to the question. Seldom an entire episode of any show is a piece of art, with the exception of The Body. However there are many scenes that I think can be called art and not just in BtVS. Sometimes a scene is so beautifully (there's that word again) composed that you have to call it art. The camera angles, the music, the dialouge, the acting, the light and the scenery, it all comes together and creates something good. I know it's not really a tv show, but the movie Hero is a good example of what I'm talking or trying to talk about. You don't see it that often in regular sit coms, but sometimes you do get the things that are a bit extraordinary.

So after all the this my conclusion is, yes televison can be art.

like all entertainment, Tv is not art but can become art. one of the major qualities of art is the ability to stand the test of time.

for the record anyone who sets off to make tv or film as art is a pretentius fool who should be mocked from afar.
