What do you think about this election topic?? Should homosexual couples be recognized as married the same way that heterosexual couples do, not only in terms of marriage as an expression of undying love and devotion, but also to receive many of the "benefits" the government provides to married couples (i.e. taxes, legal issues, etc)

I'm not sure.

Theres a part of me that says "Hey, they have a right to be married, just cause" and I believe thats true. Then theres this part that says "Hey, marriage is between a man and woman."

Most liberals believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, because President Clinton signed something stating that marriage IS between a man and a woman. But does this mean they shouldn't be entitled to thing such as insurance? No, because they have a partnership which should garner the basic rights.

Now I don't know if gays will ever receive the title of "marriage" but I do know and believe that they should receive the same benefits of straight married couple.

My thought pattern is that they should be granted the same rights as married hetero couples in that I personally do not feel that being homosexual is a choice, but rather a part of who they are, and this issue is basically the same as saying people are different because of their skin color. We all know that's not true and I think this falls under the same category. Anything to deprive homosexuals of the rights that all other hetero americans have is a form of prejudice.

But why does something say that..? (And what's saying that..?)

I think that of course they should, I don't get one reason why they shouldn't.

I think that they should have the same rights as straight couples. They are human, why shouldn't they have the right to marry someone they love. I think it should go back to the 'all men are created equally' ya know they should have the same rights as anyone else.

Yup, let them marry. They have as much right and ability (if not more) to fall in love as straight couples. Why should they be classed as different?

Depends on if it's a religious marriage or not. It's equally wrong to force a church to marry a couple against it's beliefs as to prevent the couple from being married.

Also quoting article 16 of UN human rights definition:

Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.

Note the last part, if you strictly enforce hetrosexual marriages everyone is not entitled to equal rights as to marriage; men can only marry women and women can only marry men, ie: men does not have the right to marry men - and therefore prohibiting gay marriages would be a violation of human rights.

Do you really think so..? Isn't marriage one the rights you have as a human being..? Do you think the church have the right to make rules like that.. Ok, I don't know.. But some chruches allows gay marriage, so then it's not wrong with a religious marriage right..?

Does anyone have a real argument against gay marriage..? I mean, you don't have to be against it but do you understand how and why people can be against it..?

To be honest i don't get the entire marriage thing. Personally I don't think marriage has anything to do with love. I think it's just a way for the church and government to control people. Moreover I can't get the religious part of it, but I am a firm believer in equality and therefor I think we should all be entitled to marry, no matter if you're gay, atheist or something else very very strange. Because in todays society being married comes with (like you've already written) some advantages, mainly economical.

To me marriage is just a piece of paper. Their are pleanty of common law 'wifes husbands here' i.e you live with them long term and just don't get married. This also entitles you to legal rights.

gotta agree
Honestly there's not ONE logical reason against gay marriage. I've seen so many debates about it and I never comment. Other than to say..... I don't even see any merit in debating it. Anyone against it might as well say "Yes I am a bigot and an Idiot".

Thanks, that's what I wanted to hear :)
I'm for it. and, the main reason i come 'cross against it so far sides yknow old fashioned prejudice would be religion. and marriage is sorta religious, but...dun mean can't have the same rights, does it?
i mean america doesn't punish atheists for not believing in a god or gods, so why punish people who want to marry someone in their own gender?
yknow, just like homosexuality, left handedness used to be thought evil?
Marriage is a common term, but...not everyone's married.
I'm for the equality, but, I do also have a personal interest in it, as theres more of a chance that i marry a girl, than there is that I marry a guy, just cuz I like girls more.
but...true equality'll never be reached. just like peace. its sad. 🙁

Well I certainly think that gay marriage should be allowed it's like we are being discriminated for just being the way we are which can be quite repressive of you're not on a high note and the topic is mentioned. i do feel that the church need to broaden there mind a little. Now more than ever i think homosexuality is becoming more open and accepted in society, to becoming somewhat a trend. I've met a couple of people saying they are gay just to be different, which bugs me slightly. You are what you are and you where made as to who you were meant to be made gay or strait. Also if god made all things bright and beautiful, why are we excluded eh!?

I can't explain it so that it makes sense out of my own head, but there is a definite difference between a common law marriage and an actual piece-of-paper marriage. It's more than just a state thing it's... See, here's the word-block again. And you people have already witnessed the tip of my rant-prone iceberg, so you know that doesn't happen often.

The way I see it, the idea that two people can really connect on that level - the marriage level - just astonishes me so much that I figure if a couple of any gender combination can manage it, more power to 'em.

I'll never get this debate. There should be none.
Gay Marriage? Yes. Why? Just because.
The only counter arguments one can create are religious ideas about men and women and those should have no relevance regarding politics. Hell, separation of church and state. How many years ago did that, in theory, happen?
If churches don't want to marry them, to hell with them. No one should force churches to invert their beliefs, but one thing is religious marriage and another is legal.

This is one of those debates Chomsky says only serve to keep the focus of elections on meaningless irrelevant issues.

Absolutely - exactly the point I was going to bring up with sepearation between Church and State.
I think that it should be legal, because why can't they get married? I'm bisexual, and if I find someone in the same sex that I want to be the rest of my life with, I'd like to marry them to make it offical and to show that I love the person. I think it would be totally unfair if gay marriages aren't goign to be legal. Don't think I wont be raising hell about it, because I will. I hate people who believe that marriages should just be for straight people, and that only men and women are surposed to be together, that it just plain stupid when people think that. So I believe that it should be legal, who will it be hurting for crying out loud? I mean seriously what will it hurt? Instead of poeple raising hell about it and fighting against it, they should just allow it because its not hurting anyone.

Two friends of mine live in a common law marriage, they also have a child together and have a much healthier relationship that some 'married' couples have. It depends on the individuals concerned. But if you have that connection what difference does a piece of paper making it official mean? If deep inside you know this is the person you love and will spend the rest of your life with, as long as you know this thats all that matters.

But I do see your point Jill. The way I see it is there isn't really a right or wrong thing to do, just what you want to do.

The most happiest married couple I know is EDB and Angel here, and i've always said to them that if I could have half of what they have I would be happy.

Eh... I don't really mind it much... It just seems weird if they do some stuff in public...

why is it weird for you to see "stuff" in public?

i know i wouldnt hold back any affection for a partner such as kissing just because some people might think its "wierd" and might shoud out "queer!" or whatever, more fool them for there narrow mindedness.

Thanks to my complete inability to express an emotion, I find any public display of affection weird. But I don't discriminate. 😀
