Issues with The Bronze

N.B. Based on “Family” and the episodes with the Half-Demons from Season 1 of Angel, when Demons miscegenate with Humans, the effects are apparent and enduring, as intended. There’s no broad distribution of demonic heritage in the human race.
I was going to say that "Family" was perhaps not the best example, as the Maclays were clearly lying to Tara and knew nothing about demons. However, Anya's reaction makes me suspect that they either accidentally stumbled on part of the truth or did know a little bit and used that.

The thread Anya pulled that ended up revealing that Tara was human was that the Maclays were not specifying what kind of demon. They did not seem to know there were different ones. By that reaction, it seems Anya knew that what the Maclays were saying was true was definitely possible, even if in this case it was a lie.

They also said "The Bronze" was on the bad side of town, and judging by how vamps regularly use it as a blood drive, I don't think college boys are the biggest danger there.
I mean it looks like it’s in the warehouse district so I get that. Could be it wasn’t operating entirely legally to begin with.

I don't disagree that it's possible. After all, we saw several groups of half demons with recent human ancestry in Angel. I don't think it's through natural procreation, but as part of some ritual.

What I am gleaming is, if Tara had any significant demon ancestry, Spike felt confident he would have sensed it. Anya felt confident they would have known the name of the Demon. Tara believed she would have been detected as such by a demon locator spell. Demon ancestry is something potent, it's not going to be overwhelmed by increasing the number of human great grandparents. At least that's my take.

I think that magical power being based on some half forgotten demon ancestors is a good story, it's just never really addressed.

Growing up in the Houston area i was aware of two "all age clubs". Both had bars, but the bar sections were isolated and 21+ only. However the rest of the clubs were 16+.

I agree that the Bronze is problematic and unrealistic. It makes no sense that they are allowed in there at all, even if it is an all ages club. We also see them drinking often while underage. It also makes no sense why they would want to hang out there as adults. The only way it makes sense is if it is literally the only club in town.

I may be misremembering, but I don't think we have them specifically drinking alcohol at The Bronze until Season 5 "Family" where Dawn comments that only losers drink and everyone looks at their cups. Admittedly, Buffy at least is still only 20 at this point.

And I don't think we were ever shown another club.

Unless you count the bar that demons and Spike goes to...

Do different parts of the US have the ability to alter local drinking ages? It is always a bit confusing, given that here at age 20 everyone is 2 (ish; under certain conditions, younger, down to 16 I think, is possible) years past the legal drinking age.

No, you have to be 21 to drink anywhere in the US.
I've encountered all age clubs. Especially in college towns. Kids party. Many of the kids in uni are underage for drinking though most of them are also legal adults. It's hard to tell an 18 or 20 year old that they can't go partying. note: US drinking age is 21.

Honestly, unless you card EVERYONE as the go in the door, you'll have underage people in your club. Especially if you have live music or any music they like.

The main thing is to try not sell booze to kids. So carding at point of sale is a must. Tragically, some kids will always find a way around that... but those are the same kids who are probably drinking their parents' alcohol or grabbing drinks at family events where the alcohol is flowing without someone checking up on who much everyone's consuming.

Kids who are determined to drink, particularly those with problems with substances will always find ways around restrictions. Most people i know who have had issues with booze or drugs started before they were legally allowed to consume anything stronger than juice.

It doesn't help that some kids look much older than they are and their poor IDs probably don't get much inspection in the half dark...

I don't find the Bronze all that remarkable. They serve food. They have dancing and pool. They aren't simply a bar. It's also a small town. I suspect a lot of establishments are lax about rules and authorities are probably lax about enforcement.

Frankly, as much magic as there is in Sunnydale, I'd be surprised if lots of the underage people determined to drink couldn't find some supernatural way of getting around the rules.

As DBJ noted the drinking age is 21 in the USA. Interestingly, states DO have the right to alter the drinking age. It's just that they were put under a huge amount of pressure by the Federal Government to raise it. The Fed passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act in 1984, raising the age to 21. A few states tried to fight it, but were threatened with losing some of the money they were given by the Dept. of Transportation.

So technically yes, it can be altered at the local (state) level. But practically no one wants to handle the fallout and possible loss of funding.
