Ok, I'm going to practice our good, clean debate skills here and ask about something I have seen many differing views on. (This has come up in threads before but it was a while back so...)

As a mother I fear the day I have to send my kids out into the world with all of the crazy stuff going on out there. But one thing that really scares me are the school shootings. I saw Bowling for Columbine and I was really intrigued by a lot of the arguments made. But I want your opinions...

So, what is primarily to blame here folks? Family? Society? A lack of prayer in shcools? Violent movies and rock bands? Undercooked chicken Mc Nuggets? Since we have such a variety of different people here I want your thoughts on the subject...

i think that it can be part of everything that you mentioned. well that is except for the under cooked chicken mcnugets that is, well you never know they couldbe very angry that their nugets were undercooked.
btu i think that it has to do with how they have grown up and how they were treated growing up. i also think that people can be influenced by what they see in the media (films, TV, music) i heard that there was this boy who used to listen to slayewr a lot and one day he just decided to kill all of his friends and then himself. his parents went to court with the company becaues they claimed that they were influenced by the music. so i thinkt hat ikt can be form everything.

I do believe that some are truly ill, but I don't agree with it being any specific music or movies/shows...people might be ill to begin with but I don't believe that something other than might be the cause of it.

And I'm inclined to agree with you Chasity. I don't think it's very responsible for us to blame movies and music and anything else we can point a fingers at. I agree that those things have some effect on an impressionable youth but the KIND of effect is going to greatly depend on where that kids head is. And their opinions of themselves. And that starts at home. Kids need to be brought up with a good values and a good sense about the person they are. No normal, well adjusted kid is going to watch Basket Ball Diaries or listen to Marilyn Manson and go "Hey, I suddenly have an urge to plot the deaths of my classmates." Sorry. Although the other factors are of valid concern kids have a much better chance when they are armed with some self confidence, and a valued set of morals and principals. And this doesn't just go for the "kids at risk". It's also for the tormenters that help some of these kids along the wrong path.

as you know im on a media course.

anyone that works in the media will tell you movies dont make people violent. the kind of people who blaime their behavior on films are just looking for a way out. you have to be unstable to start with.

i do agree that it all starts at home. but all im saying is that kids can be influenced by that sorta stuff. but they do gotta be in a pretty bad place for that to happen though.
i also think that to can be society though (but again it comes down to whether the kid is right in the head first) i mean they have grown up in a world where this kind of thing is happening even more and more. i dont that we can just blame their home life for this (althoug it does play a big part). if we look back to the begining of the 20th century then these were very rare incidents. something must have changed and i think that familys have stayed the same (well mostly somethings may have changed) and so part of the blame needs to be put on society.

I think it all starts at home and your surroundings may also have a big effect on it...It's hard for me to say coz in Poland we never had situation like that....

yusu+cream=yum!, I'm not saying your wrong hon. I realize that someone can be "not right" in the head and be influenced by other things reguardless...but even then it's the parents that need to step in and take care of any instabilities. That includes monitering whet their kid is filling his head with. I realize that it's sometimes unpreventable...but I just meant that parents should be taking responsibility for their kids sick or not. If they are sick then they need the propper attention and again that's the parents job. But I am in total agreement that all of these other factors are valid concerns. I just would hope that perents are involved enough to know what's going on with their kids.

(But I do have to dissagree and say I believe that family values have changed..that families are not what they used to be. IMO that is. 😉 )

I give you one surprisingly intelligent quote from the movie Scream:

Movies do not make killers. Movies make killers more creative.

That pretty much sums up my view on the topic.

LOL! I love that movie...and that quote was great...😛

So we're all agreed that the Mc Nuggets are to blame?

Yup, it's just a conspiriacy see...the McDonalds people are hiring teen assassins to create a social scare that will cause mass hyseria forcing people to debate the deterioration of good family values so that all of the parents will desperately cling to their children looking for security and some sense of normalcy which leads them all to the capital of all family happy havens...Mc Donalds...where they love to see you smile! 😛

OMG!!They just opened new McDonald's near me..I'm scared now...

Seriously..this problem is v.complex.It involves family, family values, surroundings, mental health and many more...

lol

I think it has to do with your upbringing and your state of mind, ya know if your like mental or whatever lol

I thought the most interesting tidbit from Bowling for Columbine (and it was full of interesting tidbits! Great movie, a tad biased, but fantastic) was that violent crime rates are not increasing. We are NOT becoming more violent as a society, or as a world. What's increasing is MEDIA COVERAGE. We hear about it more, we're exposed to CNN and Fox News and MSNBC 24/7 and that means that cable news networks have to provide us with 72 hours of news every single day. Endless repetition breeds the illusion that we've become a much more violent society. Day in, day out we hear it on tv: MURDER MURDER MURDER SHOOTING SHOOTING SHOOTING DEATH DEATH DEATH. I have a friend who refuses to pay attention to the news because she says it's a constant barrage of uber-depressants, and while I don't have the ability to completely shut the world out, I totally understand her rationale.

Everybody is selling something, and it's the news media's job to sell us a scary world where we have to watch the news to keep abreast of the lastest threats and scares.

"Bowling for Colombine" was an excellent film which I watched for the first time recently. I thought the most telling comment was from Marilyn Manson who when asked what he would say to the kids replied that he wouldn't say anything to them - he'd listen...

Interesting comparison Michael Moore made between the US and Canada. Same levels of gun ownership yet v much higher gun crime in the US - because Americans are apparently more afraid of life in general as a result of the type of media coverage Dolphin cites above. I'm not sure on that one but it sounded plausible...

Bah, Michael Moore is too manipulative for my taste, still BFC was pretty good.

It all starts at home, by the way.

everyone has something dark inside them and as Xander once stated 'who hasn't *idly?* thought about taking out the school with an uzi?'

and its true to! Ive thought about mowing everyone down once or twice, but I'm just as sane as any of you! acctually, no Im not, Im more sane then alot of you, but thats not the point.

We all have our breaking point, some people just start of close to the edge.

and as Ashton Kutcher has stated, 'if you havn't questioned your crazy, then you probobly are.'

i say it starts out with marylyn manson music...cause he's an evil evil man...he just makes people evil...i'm not surprised he isn't banned....they should ban every rock group or tv program that preaches violence and hate...cause that ain't right....

lol

you know what really is the problem...the schools...they spend all that money on fancy buildings and shiz...but they fail to quash bullying...falkin bullying is the easiest thing to get rid of with a little effort...but no one did it...and thats what happened...
