For a while, the world faced a shortage of pink paint because much of it went into the life-size Barbie set, creators of the upcoming Margot Robbie-starring film told Architectural Digest. To translate Barbie’s toylike aesthetic into the real world, set designers looked to Palm Springs’ mid-century modern architecture, which was “spot-on” as a muse for the iconic Dreamhouse, said the movie’s production designer Sarah Greenwood.

Director Greta Gerwig also wanted an “authentic artificiality” for the set, with very bright pinks, to faithfully emulate the Barbie she loved when she was a little girl. With all the over-the-top fuchsia dolling up the Dreamhouse’s walls and fixtures, there left a global shortage of that shade of paints. “The world ran out of pink,” Greenwood proclaimed.

Okay, now that is cool! So much pink they ran out. Step foot in the WB soundstage and it has to be all pink inside.

This implies that there is high demand for bright pink paint!

I never played with Barbies much, but I am intrigued by this movie, mainly because I wonder how it has a plot. And is Ken actually gay, which we always suspected?

A world shortage of pink paint? You mix pink from a white base with red and a bit of blue added to it. Maybe there is a lack of ready-mixed paint or even a lack of aerosol cans of paint but this is a story designed to add "lore" to the movie before it even comes out. You may not be able to get the pink they want as an architectural paint from a store because not many people want it but the base white and their colour additives don't seem to be in short supply. Our local Home Depot should be able to set them up with all the paint they need and if it's not enough, just go to the next Home Depot. In our local area, there was a Ford Taurus and a Jaguar and there is now a Tesla and a 1969 Camaro all done in Pepto-Bismol pink and I doubt there is any lack of ability to make the colour in any form of paint.

Very much this. Pink is a color that most paint stores won't keep a lot of premade on hand. Nearly all paint these days is mixed when ordered.
Why cant they run out if pink hair dye? Thats the only pink I dont really like.

Never liked Barbie much, but I'd see the movie if its up for free.

The Guardian picked it up:

In the interview, Greenwood, a six-time Oscar nominee, said the film had caused an international shortage of pink paint. “The world ran out of pink,” she told the magazine.

While some media outlets repeated the claim without qualification, Lauren Proud, vice-president of global marketing at Rosco, the paint company used by the film, shared extra context with the Los Angeles Times.

Proud confirmed the film “used as much paint as we had”, but qualified that production on Barbie had coincided with wider global supply chain problems during Covid-19, as well as extreme weather in Texas in early 2021, which had affected vital materials used to create the paint.

“There was this shortage and then we gave them everything we could — I don’t know they can claim credit,” she said, but acknowledged: “They did clean us out on paint.”

So one company ran out of the colour they were using because they ran into supply chain problems and the movie makers claimed they used up the world's supply of paint?

Hollywood hype at its finest. It shows why you should never trust the media. Any time I have known the story behind what was reported, the entire thrust of the story was wrong and every single detail was wrong.

But it's true though. The film caused them to run out of their pink paint.
“They did clean us out on paint.”

I heard a rumour that the singer Pink wanted to be in on the ' action ', just one thing though
in order to be pink on the inside how much pink paint would she have had to drink?
All answers to ChaseRules, why? Just because.
