Question I've been meaning to ask you all this...

Hey everyone....

I'm currently writing a "graphic novel" and my writing mentor is always reminding me not to write what has already been read 100 of times. Now, I understand that originality is a relative term so I'm not going for complete innovation. But was just going to ask my astute and aware buffy community if there were any books, comics, essays, news articles, movies, music videos that they know of that include the following (2 or more):

-Fantasy elements (talking animals, different dimensions ect)
-A war hero who renounces his calling to fight in favor of free will
-A talking lionness (who happens to be a saint) yes I already know about Aslan.
-A brother & sister who happen to be banished prince and princess (respectively)
-Of course, the idea of moral ambiguity and the relativity of "good" & "evil"
-Said princess sister being banished to an island
-Three hybrids (an alien/man hybrid, a demon/girl hybrid and an animal/boy hybrid) who comprise the "Head Boys and Hot Chicks With Superpowers" set of the universe...
-A glowing mysterious man who floats and drinks lemonade
-part of a series

I think those are a lot of the defining attributes of the story I'm writing....
OH and one last note:
-It's supposed to be a "storybook" graphic novel hence the fantasy and the princess ect....

The war hero who renounces his calling in order to fight for free will sounds like Darth Vader when he turns against the emperor and the ways of the sith to act as he wishes and spare his son. The theme is a lot like redemption. I don't know though, maybe your putting a spin on it and doing a fallen kinda thing, where the free will is bad acts....thats a lot like Anakin turning his back on the jedi council and going dark side.

The royal brother and sister who are banished, sounds alot like luke and leah.

Ultimately though, george borrowed these themes from someone else too. I'd be more concerned with trying to make it your own and doing a good job on it than similarities in theme.

Good luck with it, it sounds like a fun story!

i think it's not what the story line is, it's how you tackle it. Like, to me, the main plot of Buffy is not something i find very interesting, but it's how it was written and the characters that make it good. same with stuff like harry potter.

Or you no you could have a different issue like Heroes does now, the plot line is sliod, but the writing sucks.

I'm getting serious "The Tempest" vibes. I mean, it's all about the exile (and then escape and restoration) of a royal family (a sorcerer Duke and his daughter) to a magical island upon which they encounter fantastic creatures. So they've got princes, dukes, kings, fantasy creatures, magical super powers, and banishment to a mysterious island in common with yours. A glowing mysterious man who floats and drinks lemonade, however, seems to be an entirely unique (and interesting) component. The good news is that you can do a re-imagining of Shakespearean ideas and concepts and be thought intelligent for making the allusion rather than considered a plagiarist. After all, it worked for Forbidden Planet.

I'm not really into graphic novels, as in, I haven't read many. But I think what you sort of lined out for us now, it's quite general. Heroes who decide to choose their own path, mutants, good and evil, it's all your usual sci-fi suspects. I mean that in a good way, though. I think there's more than enough room for you there to define your own story. I'd love to see some of your work when it's done!

Oh, and that lemonade guy, he sounds interesting. What's he all about? I want to know more about him ^^

Also probably a big theme...Like deathnote and stuff. But, just because it's been done before doesn't mean it shouldn't be done again, in a different perspective.

Yesh, I think alot of graphic novels will have this, especially manga...But agian, it's not cliche if you do it in your own way.

I'm not a huge reader of graphic novels, but I've read a bit of manga stuff (and seen alot of one-off artworks and stuff on dA), and I'm planning on getting the complete batman. xD

If the artworks cool enough, I don't think people will mind a few tiny bits that aren't 100% new.
