Funny how people say 'Oh, you watch that stupid show?', then they see it and they're hooked!

I was sitting in my living room the other day watching the 'Bargaining' 2-parter when my dad sat down on the couch. Now he hates most modern tv, loves old 50s sci-fi so this is his natural enemy. Thing is he got so into the story of Buffy's ressurection that he was asking me loads of questions about the characters, laughing at the jokes and telling anyone else who came in the room to be quiet so he could watch the end of it. He'll now sit happily and watch it whenever it's on and doesn't say things like the above.

Does anyone else have a story like this or just get tired of defending their favourite show only for that same person to turn around and say 'Hey, this show's quite good!'?

haha, kind of the other way round for me!

I always though "buffy the vampire slayer" sounded so cheesy, and I always thought- nahhh I'll never watch that! But as soon as I saw the first episode- I was officially hooked!

yeah, the first ep is THAT good! lol
Oh yeah. I just got one of my best friends into Buffy. I talked about it all the time, and about two weeks ago, he got sick of hearing me yammer about it and asked to see it. I showed it to him, and he instantly fell in love with it. He watched season 2 in about a week, and he finished season 3 during a 3-day weekend. Now, I gave him season 4, and he's excited for it because I told him this was when Willow turned gay...and, coincidentally, he's got the hots for Willow. xD

My other good friend wants to see it, too, since she feels out of the loop and likes David Boreanaz on Bones. I plan to give her my season 2 DVDs tomorrow.

My best friend said that to me... and now I'm hooked.

I'm always trying to hook my family. I got them into Firefly, but they're still shying away from Buffy (all but my sis, who is not hooked due to lack of TV time, yet does admit to Giles' hotness -- because it appears as if ardent admiration of the G-man is hereditary).

My ex boyfriend always moaned about hating Buffy so much but one day I was sitting in my room watching a season 5 episode and he did what Bluebirds dad did, started asking question about the characters and wanting to know the backstory and in jokes so after a couple more episodes I just turned around and asked him if he wanted to start watching it from the beginning, which he very clearly did and the rest was smooth sailing.

Actually it's one of the only things I miss about him!

I just watched Smile Time with my boyfriend the other day and it was the first time he sat down to watch Angel or btvs with me, and then he was asking me if we could watch more episodes... lol I love it.

I was always people who responded "Eww, really?" when my friends said they liked Buffy. Specifically it was one friend. In sophomore year, she was additced to Buffy, as she'd watched it from when it first aired, and I was hooked on a different show. We'd always talk in Honors American Studies about another show I got her into, and our respective shows, and she tried to get me to watch Buffy but I wouldn't.

This year, senior year, I was all for it. Mostly because she would only agree to watch my show if I watched hers. So we traded on the same day, and here I am, months later, having finished 20+ seasons of different shows, and she has watched two episodes. That boob. But anyway she told me she had seasons 1, 6, and 7. So I watched the first episode and was hooked. I finished the first season and went out and bought 2, 3, 4, and 5.
We're both currently watching Murder, She Wrote. 😀

Since then, I had a mini Buffy night with another friend and got her into it. She's one of those black-and-white movie people... she basically lives in the 20s-50s. So we watched the first two episodes and she was relieved when I said I'd lend her the season. Dunno how much she's watched now, though.

I find it weird that I try to convert people. Does anyone else do this and find it weird?

Like, I love you internet people and all... but sometimes, I just wanna have a nice Buffy discussion with, say, my Dad. But he refuses to watch Buffy! Argh. I spend a lot of time trying to convert my real life loved ones. I like it SO much that I want to use Buffy quotes in real conversations and use Buffy metaphors to make points about real life (or, sometimes, just talk about it because I like it). I can't do that with most of the people in real life, though, and that sucks, so I'm always trying to convince them to watch. I feel vaguely like a Jehovah's Witness, going around knocking on my real life folks' doors (okay, calling them on the telephone) and attempting to get them to see the light. Honestly, it makes me feel like I'm waaaay overstepping... and yet I persist.

Do you guys ever feel that way?

I do the exact same thing, and I've succeeded in 'fully' convering two friends (man, I sound scary even to mayself). I'm even doing a rewatch right now with one of them, and still I want to convert others..so, yeah, I get what you're saying.

i try to use quotes in real life too. at school all you have to do to get me talking about buffy is ask me one simple question about it and i'm talking about it all day!

hehe, im always trying to ! :D but, either it never works and they dont listen, or they dont have interesting things to say about it! (i.e. they dont care about character development, but just thin
I´ve given up trying to convince peole to watch it. They just stare at me like I´m utterly stupid. The show never got the chance it deserved over here (at least not in my opinion) so that doesn´t help either. My last hope is my big sister. But she rarely has the time to watch tv/dvd and at the moment she´s watching the west wing on my recommendation. She really likes it so hopefully she´ll now trust me and give Buffy a chance. But it will take time, around christmas if I´m lucky. I would love to have someone to discuss it with in real life.

Well, so far I tried my brother and my best friend.
Well, luckily I got another friend who watches Bufy at least occasionally and with her I can discuss some of the things. The good thing is, she even finds Cangel cute 😀 well and you can imagine how much I talked about it after I found that out.
My other people, however, are not so easy.
My Mom is normally pretty easy, really. I got her into Charmed, GZSZ, DSDS and Friends just like that, although she always formerly claimed to hate the show. The tricky thing about Buffy is that pretty much all the episodes I have are in English. My Mom, however, doesn't really understand a lot of English and can't follow the show. We have German dubbed episodes on TV, but they air in the middle of the night, so I doubt my Mom will ever catch on just by accident.
My Dad is a lost case. He doesn't watch anything in any way connected to the supernatural. He accepts when my Mom and I watch DSDS (that's a German casting show, the equivalent to American Idol) and even watches Friends with us from time to time, but, as soon as anything supernatural gets involved, he bails. He once watched half and Angel episode with me (Spin the Bottle), but he got borred and thought it was stupid. So I don't think there's really something I can do about it.
My brother I've got to watch 2 episodes with me, but he wasn't that impressed, so that's not too good either. BUT I recently found out his girlfriend used to watch Buffy (she asked me about the Bangel love...I was so shocked, lol) so this might just be the key to convert him.
Well, and my best friend. Apparently they (her sister and her or something like that) used to watch Buffy, but only irregularly and a long time ago. Well, she gave me the choice between either watching Buffy episodes with me or going jogging with me well and I chose jogging (a stupid choice? But I just wanted someone to jog with 🙁 )

opps, my rep comment was suppost to say. 'I feel like a Buffy missionary' 😛
I still try and get friends and family to watch.. mostly they roll their eyes because they're used to me mentioning it or watching it.
Dont know.. maybe Buffy is something you discover on your own? And you connect with it because it encompasses the outsiders?

I've converted a few of my family and a few friends, my latest conquest is up to season 4 😛

My mum was sick at home once and I was watching "Triangle" , when it finished mum asked if we could watch another ep, then another lol. I told her that it was ok to like Buffy and she could borrow my DVDs when ever she wanted but than my little sister came home and teased her so she said she didn't like it anymore! Mum and her partner absolutely love Firefly, I have never seen my mum more hooked on a show (except maybe the Bold and the Beautiful). 😉

Both my dad and stepmum pretend they don't like BtVS but I have caught both of them watching the DVDs without me! My older sister loves it, and we are still working on my younger sister, her current boyfriend is a huge fan aswell so it should be too long before we break her down! I don't know why she doesn't trust me though as I introduced her to Scrubs and she is more obsessed with that show then I am now!

Yeah I can safely say I sound like a nut trying to spread the word of Buffy! 😀

I know what you mean, although I'm lucky enough to have a mom and a dad who are obsessed with buffy too! So we use buffy quotes, metephors etc. around the house. sadly though, none of my offline friends like buffy (as much as i try to convert them)

the funny

The big funny that me and my friend always talk about is when my middle brother, tells me that Buffy is for childern and that iam so sad for watching it
.

I will however put on season 6 and watch his face go rather red x

He lets my neice watch it shes only 11 and been watching it since she was 8
so yeh its for Kids!!! I think not x

Oh and most people i work with think i should'nt dicuss what i really like because iam such a geek , so what i have pride in what i love x

I was a "Buffy" eye-roller for the entirety of the series. My sis-in-law loved it.... I thought she had some lame gene that my brother was unaware of, LOL. I made FUN of people who watched such non-sense as Buffy!!! - .....Then Buffy ended its 7-yr run.... and then one day... I was home instead of work... sick with the flu. I caught a Buffy episode as I was flippin thru channels. I was bored, stuffy, & achy... and just settled there. At the end of the show, I thought "Humph. Not half bad. That Xander character was pretty funny, and I like that Willow girl." Then I watched another episode that came on right after that one. (they showed two per day, every day). I watched 2 eppys every day for about 5 days. THEN I HAD TO GO BACK TO WORK. Oh no! - I was hooked! What would I do? I needed to know what happened after Tara got brain sucked by Glory! What about that blonde vampire guy? OMG! I HAD TO KNOW!!!! Heh...

So I started buying the DVDs... and the rest is Buffy history. 😀 I started watching Angel when Season 4 had just ended, & I caught the repeats of that season that summer, & I watched Season 5 as it aired. AND I WAS DEVASTATED when Angel was canceled! Dammmit!! So then I started buying Angel DVDs, too.

I don't think I've ever turned anyone on to Buffy, tho. I've told many people about it, and I have a few friends I KNOW would love it... if they'd just bust a move & start watching.

hah cool
In my graduating class, there were about 6 or 7 of us who were Buffy fans. Every day we would talk about Buffy, what happened in the new episodes, what happened in the reruns on FX. But I was the only one out of us who got into Angel, and I could never understand why they didn't like it. (personally, I prefer Angel over Buffy any day.) But now, none of my friends like Buffy. I'm also a huge Michael Jackson fan, and even my friends through MJ forums don't understand my BTVS/Angel obsession. They wonder how on earth I could make graphics of something other than Michael... but I keep trying to get them to watch an episode, but it's difficult since the only time either one of the shows are on anymore is 6 in the morning. Guess I'll just be an BTVS/Angel loner...

i got my auntie hooked on buffy...to the point were i managed to even persuade her to take me to several weekend conventions LOL and she loved it!

i also managed to get my best friend to like it...she didnt get hooked so to speak...but she at least knew what i was talkin about when i rambled bout buffy things for a change lol
we had regular buffy nights..i was just made up that she agreed to watch it =)

If I could agree more with you I would but it's physically impossible! I have this strange need to share Buffy (as if it is mine to share!) with the people in my life because I genuinely feel anyone who doesn't watch it is missing out. Like you said PV I would love to have a Buffy chat with my Dad becuase we always have these incredible conversations, I want to fight with him over the merits of Bangel and Spuffy!! I want to quote Buffy and have people actually know that I'm quoting Buffy! I want to have an insane Buffy marathon with my friend Orna just see her reactions to certain eps that I know she would love if I could just wrangle her into watching!

Aaah! It really does feel like being a Jehovah Witness!

aw im flattered you're using one of my banners :) Cool av too
same here. both my aunt and my best friend were trying to get me into buffy so whenever i went round my mates or my aunts it was always on. i kept saying i would never like it but i told my mate i would give it a try so we watched The Wish and now i'm completely obsessed with it!

I used to be one of those people..! My friend, now hates Buffy, but she used to LOVE it. Everyday she mentioned it I'd laugh and say things like 'As if you watch that' after she talked about it again and again she made me listen to the OMWF songs and I thought they were quite catchy but I never told her. Then one day I was flicking through the channels and I saw an episode of Buffy and I was AMAZED!
