Just rewatched this. Loved it. Brilliant episode, cracking villain. But rather annoyingly left unresolved. I guess the boy was just pure evil, but the demon said there was literally nothing in there, just a void. Would have been interested to know more. Maybe even a second part to the story later in the series would have been great.

I agree. It would have been interesting if Wolfram & Hart "recruited" him or something along those lines and Angel bumped into him somewhere in season 5. Maybe there could be more brownies involved also. 🙂

'I used Chocolate.....to make them brown.....which is how they get their name.....Brownies.....'

I love this episode; it's one of my faves from Season 1. 🙂 I really loved the twist in the plot with the demon and the little boy's soul.
I think though the best part of this ep for me are the scenes in which the little boy is taunting Angel and Wesley using Doyle and Wesley's father. I thought those were brilliantly done.

This is one of my favourite episodes of Angel. Extremely chilling. Love the twists, especially when we find out about the boy not having a soul. It reminded me of what Sam Loomis said about Michael Myers in the original Halloween.

Though I just watched the ep, and when it got to the point where Ryan set the house on fire and Wesley was saving him, I was like "Dude, just throw him in the fire!" 😛

Glad to see I'm not the only one who loves this episode. It's a big ep for Wesley too, we find out more about his past and insecurities. And the Doyle references 🙂

A second part would be cool, it wouldn't even have to be ryan, perhaps another soulless child. Curious to see why he didn't have a soul though- his parents and sister did. He gave the ep that creepy serial killer vibe, that was great.

ANGEL: You've never done this before. Look, it takes tremendous strength. Mental strength.
WESLEY: Resistance to suggestion. Yes, I understand that. I like to think of myself as possessing a certain...
ANGEL: Wesley, you don't even have sales resistance. How many thighmasters do you own?
WESLEY: The second one was a free gift with my "˜Buns of Steel.'
😀

This episode is in my top 10 of AtS. A fallow-up would definitely have been nice!

The canon Spike/Willow miniseries Joss had Brian Lynch write explores a similar concept. The Big Bad is a serial killer who wants his soul back because it made him enjoy murdering more.

Amazing ep, one of my favs of the season as well!!! Every time I read the title though, I hear Jenny's demonic voice saying it in "The Dark Age" lol

I liked the episode too and am curious what happened in the boys future.

Potentially he escapes at some point.... and goes after his parents.

Wonderful ep,it was dark and the demon was truly creepy and scary. The first time we uncover the back story of Wesley and his father, and an amazing plot twist.
