What was your first impression of Louis?

Oddly polite and a bit disturbing because of it, as a vampire. Troubled, as a human.

What was yourr first impression of Lestat?

He did not come across as the manipulator and erratic individual he later showed himself to be, but as something better.

Do you think that Louis's brother and Drusilla are comparable?

Louis's brother seemed a bit of a nonentity to me. He appeared, died and influenced Lois afterwards, but that appeared to be his only role.

Why do you think Louis didn’t leave Lestat instead of going to New Orleans?

Fear. Lestat had kept Louis so much in the dark about the nature of vampires that Louis did not know what Lestat might be able to do.

What do you think was Lestat's reason for turning Claudia?

A combination of a desire to manipulate Louis, to create a vampire doll and because he could.

Do you think Claudia was right when she called Louis, Lestat's slave?

Not entirely. Louis did have a degree of independence; for one thing, he refused to give Lestat any of the properties or businesses.

Did you think Claudia had killed Lestat?

No, but I had seen the film, so I already knew Lestat survived. If I had not, I might have thought he was dead, though.

How are you enjoying the book so far?

At the moment, it is okay. The "interview" style takes some getting used to.

Do you have a favourite character?

Not as yet.

What was your first impression of Louis?
At first, he seems rather cold and unemotional, and not someone I feel much sympathy for. Then as we read his story, we see how much of his humanity still remains.

What was yourr first impression of Lestat?
He seemed rather vulgar, a hedonist to Louis's aesthete. Later, he seems more of a mystery, wanting companions, but not having much feeling for them.

Do you think that Louis's brother and Drusilla are comparable?
In a way. Both introduce the element of spirituality to the story, and both characters have a saintly, unworldly aura to them. (I am thinking of Drusilla before she was turned.) They introduce the question of how religion fits in all this, though without answering it. Both are sacrificed, though in the brother's case, this was accidental, whereas Drusilla's turning was obviously deliberate. But the brother doesn't seem to weigh much on Louis, except in rare moments.

Why do you think Louis didn’t leave Lestat instead of going to New Orleans?
I agree with @NotASlayer, that it was fear of the unknown. As much as he disliked Lestat, he was the only other vampire Louis knew.

What do you think was Lestat's reason for turning Claudia?
To keep Louis with him. He knew Louis would stay to protect her. But it doesn't seem to have occurred to Lestat that they might ally against him.

Do you think Claudia was right when she called Louis, Lestat's slave?
No. Louis stayed, but he was never at Lestat's bidding. I'm not sure Claudia, who has so little of human feeling, can understand Louis's motivations, or even his sense of wanting to stick with old habits.

Did you think Claudia had killed Lestat?
I've read this before, and I can't remember what I thought then, though I might have been aware there was a sequel! But I think I would not have thought that such a conventional 'killing' would have worked on a vampire.

How are you enjoying the book so far?
It's a page turner! I do wish it had more breaks to have a good place to stop. I wonder why Anne Rice chose not to have chapters?

Do you have a favourite character?
My favorite character in this book is yet to come. Of these three, Louis is my favorite, simply as the protagonist, but I find Claudia the most fascinating.

I have been wondering why the author chose that format instead of a straight telling of the tale from Louis's point of view. Is it to give us a companion in our possible disbelief? Is it to give another layer of separation from readers, so we are more obviously cast in the role of detached observer? I'd be interested to know what others think.

The not having chapters you mentioned may well be a result of the interview style. I have been wondering if the "interviewer" is effectively the reader. He is not fleshed out at all, without even a name (so far), that making him into a surrogate for the reader is not too difficult.

I wonder if this is where SPN got ”dead man’s blood” from (it being deadly to vamps). Or is this a general part of vampire lore?

I read this book a looooong time ago, and the two that followed, but I can’t remember anything from Lestat’s book. So this one has me really curious about his background, I wonder how much Rice had plotted out already for him. She hints a lot at a deeper history with his dad etc.

Beyond that, I realize how shaped I am by the movie. I cannot but picture Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and Kirsten Dunst. To be fair, that movie does a great job with this book, though Christian Slater was a bit old to play ”the boy” interviewer

Thankfully they aged up Claudia in the film. Louis describing 5 year old vampire Claudia as ”sensual” on more than one occasion is a bit upsetting.

As to why Lestat made her - part wanting companionship and this keeping Louis around, part ”what the heck”. He probably thought it’d be a fun experiment. To get rid of if it failed.

Louis and Lestat are the perfect vampire team. Through Louis I as a reader get all the existential pondering and dread, the gravitas of life and of what being a vampire means.

Lestat is the action, the predator, in some ways the expected stereotype of a vampire. He makes Louis more interesting because he gives Louis something to react to.

Question: they move to New Orleans and have their ”baby” Claudia. I am on page 100 now. It seems, by Louis telling, that it has been years and Claudia is now essentially an adult inside but a child outside. Ok, but why hasn’t anyone around them reacted to this eternal five year old? They’re living a pretty lavish lifestyle. Surely someone out to have noticed?

Googling indicates that Anne Rice invented this bit of lore. I don't know if that's true, but it makes sense that vampires would have to have living blood because they themselves are animated corpses.

I read them a long time ago, too (and don't want to give spoilers), but I seem to recall that Rice changed a lot of details about Lestat's background from the first book to the second.

Totally agree! I think it's meant to seem disturbing, though. I also see them now as those actors, even though it's been years since I watched that movie.

I guess they pay their servants a lot to not notice things? It seems like they'd also notice that their employers are never around during the day, nor need food prepared.

True, but thry go out with her. Take her to the opera etc. Seems rumors should fly about a magically beautiful child that never grows

I never got anywhere with The Vampire Lestat when I tried to read it before, but the ad for it at the back of Interview with the Vampire describes a being that does not sound much like the one in IWTV.

Yes, I think Claudia is meant to be disturbing. And she would probably be well served in live action by being done in not entirely good enough CGI, giving the impression that she is not right.

I rather like the Lestat of this book, I don’t think he is sympathetic, but he is engimatic and interesting.

Now that you guys mention it, I do recall vaguely that later Lestat turns more into a ”cool guy” that Rice was a bit too enamoured with.

I can see why he got his own book though, he is probably the most interesting character in this trio, even if I think Louis is a better character to tell the story from. Perhaps Lestat works so well because we’re not ”in” his mind.

Also, I’d forgotten how old this book is! From the 70’s, wow.

I think Lestat’s comments on other vampires are interesting, when Louis wants to leave him, Lestat says thst other vampires are like him, pure predators who would kill Louis because he is weak. obviously Louis doesn’t know how true or not this is, but it is interesting how desperate Lestat seems to want to keep him around.

Just makes me wonder what Lestat gets from their relationship at this point, if it is all about money, or if he really does want companionship, no matter how flawed.

I haven’t read yet what happens to Babbette, but I am curious about it

There, done with part 1.

Very dramatic end, I must say, though I kind of play the movie in my head again here.

I think I lean more to Louis saying he was a submissive accomplice, or something like that, to Lestat

I find the relationship between Louis and Claudia, and Louis angst and existential anger, very interesting when I think of him as Anne Rice channeling her own grief and rage

Favorite character: Though I find her annoying too, I am fascinated by Claudia. This creature trapped in a child’s body.

Yes; I was expecting some big reveal about that, something major happening, given how it was mentioned earlier in the book, and this just seemed like an aside.

It definitely foreshadowed another blond vampire who became more complex and cool as the show went on!

That's a good point. Maybe Rice meant for her to be bigger in Louis's life, but she couldn't work it into the plot once Claudia showed up.
