One week before we start our read of Interview With A Vampire (IWAV) and what are your thoughts about this book?

No spoilers for anyone that hasn't read it previously.

Just realised it's IWTV -- dunno why I had it in my head it was IWAV lol
I didn’t finish it the first time through, but I’m interested to compare my initial reading experience with this new one. I remember feeling like it was a very slow burn for awhile (I stopped at like 100~ish pages).

I have watched the film, but not read the book. I started The Vampire Lestat but for some reason did not finish it. I may have simply not been in the mood.

I've read it several times and I highly recommend it
The first time I read it, in the early '90s, I thought it was a metaphor for AIDS. But I later found out it was written in 1976, after Rice's young daughter died of leukemia, another blood disease.

I'm going to try to read along - still have my old copy!

Interview with the Vampire is the vastly superior book of the series. Then again, my favorite is Louis and I consider Lestat the unreliable narrator (which is FACT, given how much of a demonstrable lie his statement that he only kills evildoers is). Louis is the superior, deeper narrator in every way not hampered by constant self-aggrandizement and more introspection.

The retcon of who Lestat (the villain of IwtV) was is the most regrettable decision in her book series. Thankfully, Neil Jordan's film stuck quite strictly to the original characterizations and not the retcon romanticizing abuse.

I always find a vampire story in which the vampire is horrified by what he is to be superior to a vampire who loves what he is. The Tale of the Body Thief is less than other versions of the trope (Doctor Who's Human Nature/The Family of Blood, Angel's I Will Remember You, Smallville's Hidden, etc...) because you never once believe that Lestat covets mortal humanity the way Louis and Claudia (specifically the aging part for her) do. It becomes a mere comedy romp for him and a chance to get laid (Anne's vampires, contrary to fanfiction, a very popular misconception about the sexual content in the series that isn't there and the new series, are completely and utterly non-functional).

Anne Rice wrote and published IwtV in 1976 after the death of her 5-year-old daughter Michele from leukemia in 1972. The story came from a mother's grief for a daughter who would never grow up. Louis was, in fact, herself at her absolute lowest, while Lestat was her husband Stan (the character was originally named Lestan). Michele, of course, inspired Claudia. Madeleine the doll maker (note Anne's massive collection of antique dolls that surrounded her in her houses) was additionally another avatar of Anne.

Unfortunately, she became far too obsessed with the character she fancied inspired by her husband and wished to be more like. It's understandable, however, that it was too painful for her to write Louis, who was the character she had channeled her own grief through.

I've read the original quite a few times! I have read the first four books and have an idea of what is in the rest, though.

So I've gone through my copy and there's no chapter breaks, instead I have part 1, part 2, part 3 and part 4.

I'll post the thread up for part 1 today, and then the rest next Monday.

Please do not post spoilers if you read ahead. You can post spoilers about the part in its relevant thread, and any previously read parts.

In my edition,

Part one is pages 1-144

Part two is pages 145-182

Part three is pages 183-286

Part four is pages 287-308

Part 1 is up, there is spoilers in the questions, so please do not read the thread if you don't want to be spoiled.

I have 368 pages... physically small book so lots of pages so I'll be slightly out.

Doubt it makes any difference to where the parts begin and end. You just have to read more pages!

Part 2 is really short (I did not read the page counts above!).

Yes, and part 4 as well, which is why I'm going to post up all the threads together on Monday. So just keep your thoughts about it until then! 🙂

I finished Part 2 over mid-morning Jaffa Cakes. Which do not make me feel as guilty as mid-morning chocolate bars...

I'll post a thread next week for anyone that's reading The Vampire Lestat, and wants to discuss it, but it's just a general thread so you can decide what to do with spoilers!
