Good and bad. He did an OK job with Star Trek in my opinion and it was nothing more than that. I enjoyed the movie, but it didn't give me that "wow" factor.
I think he'll do a good job and won't disappoint, but I don't think he will look to overstep the boundary and take it to a new level.
Kidding aside, I haven't seen the Star Trek movie, but from what I've heard, he's a capable director. I mean, he doesn't have much to do with the story. I just hope he'll be able to execute it alright. George Lucas used almost only green screen on Star Wars Episode II and I think even the clone warriors in Episode III were all CGI. Now, in my eyes, that's quite bad execution, because it's really not that much of an effort to dress a bunch of guys up in white plastic armor. He did it before and it looked so much better. The CGI way is just kind of lazy.
If Abrams will approach that movie like Peter Jackson approached LOTR (not The Hobbit), where he let blacksmiths make thousands of chainmail armors and stuff so he could film thousands of real guys fight a battle, I guess it will be quite awesome. Let's just hope they get great writers and a great story for this movie.
OST was incredible (easily in my top three shows of all time), and both Cloverfield and Super 8 were good
Mischlings (would have quoted, but for some reason it's not working), well, Lindelof and Carlton Cuse ran LOSt...
And Abrams laid out the outline for the series, wrote and directed the opening two episodes, which is more to what I was referring. My point was more that Abrams is a great ideas-man. And I wouldn't discount his role simply because he's listed as "producer" on IMDB. There's a difference between him producing Cloverfield, where he largely drove the production of the movie and had his fingers in it from start to finish, and how he landed and EP credit on Person of Interest, where aside from the theme music and lending his name to the series he didn't really do much on it. It doesn't really do him or the projects justice to lump them all together like that.
I'm keeping my expectations relatively low for new Star Wars, because I don't want to get disappointed.
Yeah, I'm not expecting much. Even before we knew who the director was, even though it's being written by a good writer, I have low expectations. I mean, I get the feeling that it'll be the second Star Wars (after Empire) movie with good dialogue, but I'm still keeping my expectations low.
Then again, I don't completely hate the prequels -- I actually like Revenge of the Sith. I'm a weird person.
I'm not really that much of a Prequel hater, but I'm not really a fan of Episodes II or III. I actually enjoy Episode I, but that's mostly due to nostalgia since it was the first film I ever saw in the cinema, but asides from Jar Jar, kid Anakin, and the whole 'tax dispute' thing, it wasn't that bad. Episode II is even worse than that, it's just dull, with most of it focusing on the Anakin and Padme romance. Not that I have a problem with romance, but in Attack of the Clones, it's dull and is riddled with poor dialogue like 'I Don't Like Sand, It's Coarse, And Rough, And Irritating, And It Get's Everywhere'. It has some good moments though, but it's really not that great. Episode III was a bit better, but still contains some horrible acting and dialogue (seriously, why was Palpatine so OTT in Episode III?)
