Alien Western, a sci-fi television film about giant, vicious, alien bugs that come to earth to gorge themselves on the uranium deposits found in the ground of an Old West town, began principal photography this week in Romania starring James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Smallville) as Sam Danville, an outlaw who is about to be hanged when the aliens land.

No airdate yet.

Sounds horrible. I'm so stoked!!!
Okay, well... I can't say it sounds good. But, as a fan of cheesy Westerns (I admit a deep love the fantastically awful Lonesome Dove spinoff shows Lonesome Dove: the Series and Lonesome Dove: the Outlaw Years and have actually seen the horrible movie to which WA refers above), I have to say I'm kinda stoked. This combines two of my favorite things: JM and bad, cheesy Westerns.

Hey, now, I never said that "Purgatory" was horrible, I just hinted that it might be sorta cheesey. If you want to see horrible, watch "Billy The Kid Meets Dracula" os "Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter" sometime. They're REALLY horrible!
Cowboy James am well into that , why hasn't this been thought of before? Film looks terrible but I would watch it, Ive just watched shoot em up the effects where that bad I couldn't take my eyes off the screen and the script talk about one liners !

Seriously, though, I, for one, can't really see James Marsters being involved in something as bad as you guys are speculating that this has to be. (Nicholas Brendon, maybe, if the rumors about his drinking are true) James has just always struck me as too serious an actor to do anything that bad. Course, I've been wrong about stuff like that before (John Wayne playing Genghis Khan in "The Conqueror," for instance)

First Look At James Marsters As Outlaw Alien Fighter

By Meredith Woerner, Mon Jan 19 2009

Everyone's favorite vampire has saddled up for the role of outlaw in the new Sci Fi Channel original movie Alien Western. Lucky us — we've stumbled upon some set photos of Marsters all dirty-cowboyed up.

Cute-as-a-button co-star Sanny van Heteren posted a few pics from the set showing a dirty Marsters ready to kill some alien-bug scum. The plot of Alien Western is centered around a little town that gets attacked by giant alien bugs. Marsters plays Sam Danville, an outlaw who's supposed to be executed when the aliens land.

Anyone else thinks Marsters just picks parts off of a role playing fantasy to-do list? Vampire, check. Space and time traveler, check. Savvy thief, check. Green alien, check. Cowboy, check. I can't wait until he plays the firefighter with the troubled past followed by the Mexican apple thief. (Ten points if you catch that reference.) Either way, I'll clear my schedule to watch him slay aliens, get dirty and say yee-haw. Especially since it looks like he is going gorgeously gray around the edges. Plus giant bugs, people. This may actually be one Sci Fi original that's made of win.

Reading the movie synopsis it does sound rather stupid (to put it mildly), but then I bet you could make lots of excellent stories sound silly if described the right (or wrong) way. It all depends how it's written/directed/acted. And James does strike me as a "serious" actor - if it's really as bad as it sounds, I can't imagine James would participate. But then - he WAS in Shadow Puppets (I think that was the title), which - let's face it - wasn't exactly BRILLIANT (though watchable, kinda). I guess, we'll just have to wait and see. And either way we have James in a movie in principal role, which for us JM fans is worth a lot no matter what the quality of the movie.

good points.
Oh, wow. This looks kind of fascinating. I sometimes like cheesy, and I think I might be the only person who kind of enjoyed Wild Wild West (or whatever it was called, and it was really difficult for me to write that down..Oh! The shame! 😀) and well, you know what I think about JM, so I might actually want to watch this one.

About why JM chose to do this, I think he maybe just thought it sounded like fun? If I were an actor with (let's face it) not exactly very much Oscar potential and an extremely high A-list position, I'd sometimes just want to do something FUN. I'd hate to do serious roles all the time. And I'd rather earn money doing a sci-fi western than some based on a real life TV drama (which would be the somewhat more mainstream equivalent)

Edit: WA, did they really make a Billy the Kid meets Dracula? That's seriously...strange.

Several youtube previews now 🙂

Oh my god. I don't even need to click on the clip and watch I can see just from that image how lame it looks, exactly as lame as every other sci-fi channel movie is... you know, IMO.
