Ottawa Pop Expo returns with stars from Buffy, Doctor Who, and Star Trek

Cliff Caporale is bringing the pop culture back to Ottawa Pop Expo next weekend.
The event’s programming director is shifting gears for the second edition this year by focusing more on pop icons, like James Marsters who played Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Doctor Who’s John Barrowman.
While the stars from AMC’s The Walking Dead took over the inaugural event in 2013 to much fanfare, Caporale — who also runs Ottawa Comiccon — said it’s hard to separate comic book theme from Pop Expo.
“We still have comic books. We’re not going to get rid of them entirely because there is a fan base that enjoys that and is built on the base of that with a lot of these pop culture events,” said Caporale.
“But, it’s not the huge guest list of comic book guests that we have, like, for example, at Ottawa Comiccon, where it’s three to four times the size compared to the celebrity guests.”
Organizers are also going to try experimenting with screenings of mostly Canadian-made short films this year, including Brett Kelly’s Ottawa film, Spyfall – a musical spoof of the James Bond film, Sky Fall.
The 2014 event will see the return of another Walking Dead star – Emily Kinney who plays Beth – but the main highlight of the event, Caporale said, will be Barrowman who will do a fan Q&A on Saturday.
The 47-year-old actor is also known for reclaiming his role of Captain Jack Harkness in the spin-off TV series, Torchwood.
“He will be a true showman. He’s not only an actor, he’s also a singer, but he’s (also) an entertainer at heart. We know if people come check him out they’re going to be impressed,” said Caporale.
Also on the Q&A roster for Saturday will be Marsters and former Buffy co-star, Emma Caufield.
Caporale said the event has a future in this city because Ottawa has has a sweet spot for pop culture. With that in mind, he’s hoping to surpass last year’s attendance of 7,000 guests.
He’s toying with the idea of adding a video game element next year.
