Let's see... There's always the incredibly trite "Let's have sex because the world is about to end" story. They exchange the "little three words."

Then Buffy dies heroically, with *everyone* (Spike, Angel, Faith, Giles, Scoobies) fighting by her side. Anyone who's not returning for another season gets killed, too, and there is much carnage amongst the SITs.

Spike lives, devastated, and is Chosen to be the Watcher of the SIT who's Called. (This assumes Faith has died or something.)

How's that for weird, romantic, and unpopular? 😀

Actually, I think this is close. Angel is the Spike is there, Buffy makes a decision about who she loves, and prepares to reveal it. But first she has to stop the annual accopolypse and dies, so we wind up never knowing who she chooses. Deliciously evil to all shipers equally.

Oh, this isn't a spoiler, just a theory.
