James Was Mistreated on Buffy?

Inside TV has an On the Set Report of Smallville.

"I feel much more welcome than I ever did on Buffy," James, who plays villian Brainiac, tells INSIDE TV. "I was a regular on paper, but I was definitely the outsider of that cast."
But James, 43, says there are no hard feelings and he'd reprise the role of Spike if show creator Joss Whedon makes a movie. "I didn't take that contract to make friends," says James. "I took it to put my [9 year-old] son through college."

I have never herd anything from James on that before! Actually there was one thing I remember in a interview he said Sarah said to him that they would have a strictly professional relationship and she was not going to invite him to any party’s, but he was laughing about it?!?

And he has a 9 year old son!!
 
i feel bad to know that James felt like that on the set, but it does make a certain kind of sense. SMG seemed like the kind of person to try and keep things strictly professional with the people she worked with.
and James has a son? that's so cute! i think he'd be a cool dad!
 
I must say, I'm shocked to hear/read/whatever that. I feel sorry for James if this is really how he felt. Awww...
 
I've actually heard this before, but I've also heard that James was 'friends' with several of the cast (the kind of friends you are with people you work with.) He has a son, and is also the legal guardian of a niece, I think.
 
I feel kinda bad to hear that. James always looks like the very nice down to earth guy. I would've thought he was popular with the cast.

Well, I'm not surprised Sarah would say something like that, but it's hard to believe the rest of the cast was like that too. I know Joss Whedon used to invite cast and crew members to his house on Sundays for Shakespear readings and many of them gladly joined him.
 
I don't know, call me jaded by internet rumour mongering and badly edited interviews but i tend to be very wary of single line responses such as that one where the actual question he was asked isn't even mentioned.

For all we know he may be refering to the early months of his time on Buffy as a regular, maybe way back in mid season four. This could be him comparing how quickly he was accepted as a part of the Smallville cast to how he felt when he first joined Buffy.

Just my opinion there, of course, but i just think that it is way too easy to read the wrong thing into a comment when you don't know the whole conversation it was a part of.

Yep, and James was one of them, too. He and Joss also collaborated on some project....I think it was a comic book, but I can't remember now what the particulars were.

Watcher' right, and thanks for saying that. we don't know the whole story here. granted, i can imagine Sarah saying something like that, but people like Nick, Amber and Alyson? sorry, but i can't see them treating ANYONE like that!
 
Hard to believe. And very sad, it makes me sad and angry. About SMG, I don't really believe she said that, I don't think it's true, about not inviting him to parties and such. And I don't know about the rest of the cast treading him like that. I refuse to believe it's all true!

James wrote "Paint the town Red" with Buffy/Angel comic regular Christopher Golden. I'm not seeing Joss credited in any direct fashion, although I expect he may well have been the one to put James in touch with Golden.

The story is available in Buffy the Vampire Slayer:Spike and Dru, a collection of 4 comic book adventures by Dark Horse Comics, featuring (duh) Spike and Dru. 🙂
 
It smells publicity. Actors always make such comments to promote their new show.
 
I dont think its any kind of publicity stunt, and I dont think he was mistreated. He just wasnt that great of friends with the cast outside of work, not every cast member is going to be best of friends.

The orignal cast was close, they became best friends but you dont really here that much about them hanging out with the new comers that much.
