This is a link to an interview that Jane Espenson, one of BTVS' very talented writers gave recently. It also answers the question of whether or not in CWDP if it was the FE or Joyce that told Dawn that 'Buffy won't choose her.'

AICN: You wrote the Dawn scenes in CONVERSATIONS WITH DEAD PEOPLE. Now that BUFFY is no more, some fans wonder what Joyce was talking about when she said, "Buffy won't choose you." But surely that was just The First messing with Dawnie's head, yes?

Wait a minute now, how are you people hearing that interview?

I don't think I hear it the same way you do.

When I hear Jane Espenson say "Yes Indeed" in answer to that question, I hear her being facetious. Her tongue is in her cheek. To me she seems to be saying "Yes indeed, people are wondering about that."
 
I don't think so...I think she was simply answering the question...the last thing said by the interviewer is a question, so by Ms. Espenson answering it this way, she behaves as though she is answering the question. If she was indeed being facetious, she didn't want the readers to know....
 
I disagree.

The way my reading ear hears it, the question was asked facetiously and answered in the same spirit. I think the brevity of the answer and lack explanation supports this.

Also, whenever reading Ain't Cool News we have to remember these guys have been inaccurate in the past. Ain't It Cool ain't Time magazine.

No doubt one of us is correct in thinking Joyce was the first, or wasn't in CWDP, but the truth is we're no closer to knowing which one it is from reading this interview, than we were before we read it.
 
so many things unanswered from the series i dont think that we will ever know the answer to most i think a lot of the questions like this one has no answer i think that it is one of those things where the veiwer chooses the answer that they want but then since you dont know for sure the questions stays in the back of your mind a great writter leaves you thinking about what they have written it makes you want more

But, the same interview was posted on SpoilerSlayer and their spoilers are almost always accurate and they only post interviews that they know are correct transcripts, so its more than likely correct to assume that the interview is real.

Question. Why would Jane Espenson who had been truthful if not thorough in answering every other question, suddenly decide to be facetious? What was her motivation? What would she gain? There was no reason for her to act facetiously and judging from past interviews she has never acted so before. nerd4hire, you seem to be the only one under this impression, so unless you have proof that she was being facetious, then I think we can take this interview and the answer both at face value.

Again...I disagree.

If SpoilerSlayer is quoting an "Ain't it Cool" interview as jounalistic fact, I question it's integrity.

Take Ain'tItCool at face value? I don't necessarily take Time or Newsweek at face value. Why would I bestow that honour on an Ezine begun by an Internet geek out of high school?

Jane Espenson would never be Facetious? Are you kidding? She's famous for it.

First let's look up the meaning of the word facetious, shall we.

Facetious; adj. 1. not meant to be taken seriously or literally: a facetious remark. 2. amusing; humorous. 3. lacking serious intent; concerned with something amusing or frivolous: a facetious person. facetiously, adv. facetiousness, n

Jane Espenson began as a screenwriter in the comedy genre. One of the sitcoms she worked on was "Ellen". Ellen was known for it's facetious humour.

I believe the hint that the "Yes, indeed" remark is not meant to be taken seriously lies in the use of the word indeed. It's unnecessary, so why did she use it. She's a professional wordssmith. She picks her words carefully.

Also, you'll notice she answers the other questions in the interview with an expanded explanation. She doesn't here. Why not? It requires one in order to be taken seriously.
 
First: Let's not be rude. nerd4hire there is no need to talk to the other members of this board as though they are stupid. Not all of us need to look up the word facetious in the dictionary to know what it means.

Second: As a writer for an e-zine myself, don't insult them. Plenty of them have journalistic integrity and lord only knows who you are, so I see no reason to trust your opinion over the word of an e-zine, no matter how they might lack in journalistic integrity.

Can you say "personal attack much"? I thought we were having an interesting, little intelligent debate here. Let's not turn this into a flame war.

If by posting the dictionary meaning of the word facetious I offended someone, I apologize. It's a tricky word. I wanted to make sure we were talking about the same thing. I was beginning to get the feeling we weren't.

I don't see how I'm questioning the integrity of all Ezine writers by questioning one.

Ain'tItCoolNews is responsible for the "Spike as Slayer" scam. They lose points. That's a fact. If another EZine quotes them as journalistic fact, they loose points. That's just the way it is.

By the way let's not loose track of exactly what it is I'm saying. I'm not saying it's been proven one way or another Joyce was the first. I'm only saying no concrete evidence exists as of yet to prove one theory, or the other.
 
So, you are saying that just because they got one thing wrong, that they can't get something right?

Nevermind, your right. We do not know for sure. I will try to find another article on it. Good discussion though! 😀

isnt the point of a forum to be able to know what others think and feel so that we can brauden our knowledge by hearing someone elses ideas
if we dismiss others ideas and say i am right and you are wrong whats the point of having the discussion
to disagree is good for discusion and i think it makes it better but there is a difference between disagrement and arguing

does any one know if they will be taking care of any of the unfinished buisness from buffy on angel next season

and it looks like I have to eat crow. I was wrong. I stand by the thinking that got me to the conclusion, but the conclusion itself was wrong.

Joyce really was The First.

Here's what Joss Whedon says in the interview

IIGNFF: What was the purpose of Joyce's statement to her?

WHEDON: To rattle her. To make her wonder, and then, you know, it was just this sort of said thing. The First trying to set everybody against each other, was all, and I guess against themselves.

You know what though? Now that I know for a fact Joyce was just The First, I've lost a lot of respect for Season 7. It seems much more simplistic and uninteresting.

CWDP falls down on my list of top episodes from Number 6 to about number 55.
