Jasmine's effect doesn't reach Sunnydale?

okay, this may be me thinking too far outside the lines here. I haven't watched season 4 of Angel in a while, but what I remember is that pretty much all of California was under Jasmine's effects considering that people traveled long distances to come see her, yet the Gang never gets effected by it in Buffy.:thought:

I don't think that the effect had gotten very far outside of Los Angeles before the situation was gotten under control, so the Sunnydale contingent probably wasn't even aware of what was going on.

Buffy also doesn't seem to be able to see the whole sun blocking out. At one point they claim LA is only like 2 hours away, you'd think you'd notice the sun being blocked out!
Maybe that is just me!

Also, at the beginning of Season 6, when Giles left to go back to England, he took a jet flight from Sunnydale to Los Angeles, so was it two hours by plane, by car, or by foot? I think the writers blew the continuity on that one. As for the sun being blotted out over LA, Buffy probably noticed it, but just figured that Angel could handle it, and, if not, he would call her for help. They did call Willow to restore Angels' soul eventually, and Angelus called Buffy to find out if to see if the Slayer hunting him was her or Faith.

(Well, technically, it would have been "Back to slaying evil ubervamp and Bringer guys," since Caleb wasn't there yet.)

LMAO! "Ah darn, sun's all blotted out. Oh well, I have enough to do. Angel should fix it...back to slaying evil preacher guys!"
It could be that since the First was so focused on Sunnydale at that point, it wasn't letting any other influences into Sunnydale. And if the thread speculating that Darla was the First is right, then the First didn't like Jasmine and would REALLY be working to block her.

Maybe it did. We automatically assumed that the mass amount of cars leaving Sunnydale was only attributed to the current situation of the First messing things up, but couldn't those people be fleeing Sunnydale to be under the guidance of Jasmine? The Gang wouldn't be affected because presumably they were too busy killing things to turn on the radio or the TV and be affected by her.

I always assumed that the disc that blocked out the suns light was a mystically created disc that was precisely hovering very high in Earths atmosphere or even in a high orbit so that it only blocked out light over a specific part of the planets surface, ie LA.

That would drastically reduce the range over which the spell had to work and limit the amount of power needed to perform the spell. And it would explain why no one outside of LA knew, this object was high enough up not to be seen and blocking light out only over LA.

As for Sunnydale. Well the First really wanted everything to play out according to its own terms, sending the Bringers all over the world and manipulating Caleb even before the events of Season 7, probably back during Season 6 as well, it did have a plan, and can enter the minds of many people at once.

It can't control someone directly, but by inhabiting the minds of everyone in Sunnydale it could at least negate Jasmines influence over them. Sort of tuning her out, or blocking her magics from influencing Sunnydale anyway.

Yeah, cause the vampires converge on LA for the constant dark, and in Sunnydale the First can influence minds like the students in the school, and the cops at the Bronze.
Let's say that Darla was the First. If the First didn't like Jasmine, then it must have been threatened by her in some way, if that's the case, then Jasmine would have had a reason to want to get to Sunnydale, if not, the first wouldn't have been threatened by her, so you would think that if Sunnydale is close enough to LA for a 2 hour drive (I'm guessing because I don't see how it would be a 2 hour flight unless it was on the opposite side of California than LA was) for her to have effected it, so maybe JCC is right, it seems like the most plausible answer that Jasmine did effect Sunnydale, and that the scoobies just didn't hear anything about it because they were busy.

Interesting point.

About the blocking if the sun I´m pretty sure there is a newscast in one of the Angel episodes there they point out that it´s a regional thing. And´I´m 100% we have we discussed that before. Just too lazy to look for it right now.

I think Joss mentioned how the Scoobies were supposed to see a news report about LA going dark. But with the shows on 2different networks airing on different times and days it wouldve been hard to get everything to measure up as he would have liked it to be.

But I think the hellmouth being so active during S7 canceled out Jasmines influence. Sunnydale is a big mystical spot so an outside influnence probably wouldnt be able to make it through.

you mean this, from 'awakening'?

NEWSCASTER: Officials from the national weather service remain baffled as to the cause of this strange phenomenon. All that's being reported at this mid-afternoon hour is what meteorologists are calling quote: "a localized abnormality," confirming earlier reports that outlying areas remain unaffected. While the sun over Los Angeles has, for all intents and purposes, been blotted out from the sky. The Mayor's office has scheduled a news conference for six'o'clock this evening regarding this bizarre development and what it may mean for the city.

I would be very surprised if I meant something else. ;)
I don't think Darla was The First, I think that was actually Darla sent by the Powers to try to stop Jasmine. Cause ghost Darla didn't sound very menacing, she was trying to get Connor to realize what he was doing was evil and bad and not really him.

I agree with that theory...although, to read it like that, WHAT A WEINEE ATEMPT on the PTB's part! That's ALL they try to do? How lame! Perhaps a Plan B should have been in order on that one!
I have trouble with the idea that Darla was sent by the Powers that Be, seeing as Jasmine is a power that was and all. I mean I know she was eating people and robbing them of their free will, but she seemed to fall on the side of good in many ways, which is a deeper philosophical quandary. However, strictly operating within the constructs of the good and evil sides of the show, Jasmine is within the Powers that Be's realm, though she was, by no means perfect. Therefore, it doesn't really make complete sense that the PTB would send Darla. I'm not saying I'm convinced that it is indeed the First, but I tend to shy away from the idea that it is the divine intervention of the PTB.

The Powers seem to have a non-interference policy in our world that prevents them from taking action directly.

But as we see throughout Angel and even with Whistler in Buffy that they are allowed to send information or emissaries on their behalf.

Jasmine was one of their own who had twisted their idea of a perfect world into something more perverse. Stopping the rite that made her birth into this world possible was the only way for them to stop her.

So I could see them allowing Darla to appear to Connor as a spiritual (non-corporeal) emissary to talk him out of it being their only option. Anything else would have been interfering and we don't know how the other Higher plane powers would have retaliated for them breaking their millenia long magical neutrality.

It may be possible for the First or Senior Partners to "hurt" TPTB and that by remaining magically impotent in our plane was the pay off for them being left alone and only sending hints to the Humans.
