I was wondering...does anyone of you listen to jazz? I wasn't a year ago. 🙂 But then I got hooked and even wrote an article about it *rolls eyes*. There are so many different subgenres and all of them so great to listen... 😀 Like, for example, the bossa nova or the swing or the acid jazz! But the coolest thing is if you hear it performed alive because it's all about improvisation and it's never one and the same thing ( well, except for the jazz in its early ages 😛 ).

So what do you think about it in general?
 
some jazz is cool...but i'm not a huge fan. more of a country rock girl...Kane anyone? lol
 
I don't want to hate jazz, but I'm not a fan. Whenever I try to listen to it I seriously get a headache...yet rock doesn't give me one. 🙂

I'm not sure why.
 
I like most types of music...I don't actually own any jazz but I don't mind it. I like Big Band stuff though...it's kinda jazzy but not really, right?
 
I started getting getting into jazz a little, after college. I think, depending on your taste, there are ways to ease yourself into it - if you're coming in from a pop/rock kinda background. 50s, 60s Cool jazz is relatively easy to get into. Stuff like...Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, Chet Baker, Miles Davis maybe. And yeah, bossa nova's cool. Astrid and Joao Gilberto, Stan Getz...I like Bebel Gilberto's modern stuff. Oh, and Paris Combo, a french group. Love them. It's jazz, classical, French, Spanish, Gypsy music all mixed up. Very fun. I love listening to old Buddy Rich stuff - amazing jazz drummer. And for incredible, groundbreaking symphonic jazz - Duke Ellington.

And there's still some modern (retro) hipster swing stuff still around, right? Squirrel Nut Zippers, Pink Martini...
 
lyri, randy giles : lol well I have always been a rock girl with a serious tendency to the latino and the jazz came out of nowhere to me hehe. But I do love it now 😀 And the Big Band stuff is great, very energetical!

goldenboy : darn you certainly are into it, most of the names I have only heard but still haven't listened to them! I should do my homework 😀 From what you've mentioned I have listened only to Miles Davis ( who is a legend but I still don't really like him ), Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz and oooh yeah Duke Ellington is awesome.

There is this very melodic song "Heaven" with him and Ella Fitzgerald that I like to listen when I want to cheer up 🙂

Hey, I have actually heard some of those! Paris Combo sounds strange though...probably I just can't get used to French singing. ( which is even stranger b/c I study the language and like it! )

Have you listened to acid jazz?
 
Acid Jazz. Now...that's sort of mixing soul and funk and dance music into jazz, right? I'm not really sure. Who do you recommend for acid jazz?

I like some of the older hip-hop groups that dabbled with jazzy sounds...De La Soul, Digable Planets, Arrested Development. Don't have the records, but I liked lots of their singles.

I've got this record, "Boogaloo to Beck". Pretty wild. It's this guy, Lonnie Smith. He plays this jazz-soul-funk style on a Hammond B-3 organ. Covers Beck songs...Devil's Haircut, Tropicalia, etc. Very cool sound. I guess he's sort of acid jazz.

I like jazz, but mostly the up-tempo stuff. I really need to start a collection, but right now I'm more into exploring classical music.
