I just saw this:

Justice League Wants To Crossover with Marvel

and wondered what the assorted comic book movie fans here might think of the idea.

It was done a few times in the comics (I remember Superman using Thor's hammer and Captain America's shield at one point) and I'm sure that a movie would sell plenty of tickets, but the cost would have to be in the billion plus neighborhood, just allowing for the fees that some of the actors command per movie.

In other words, DC want to cash in on Marvel's success because they're struggling to get the DCCU off the ground and think incorporating the MCU would help.

Whatever the reason, keeping the superhero movie business going strong makes money for everyone, and if Disney can improve on the current DC product, why not? The more fans they attract, the more tickets and popcorn they sell, and the happier the stockholders are gonna be.

It's not in Disney's interest to do a crossover, especially given how poorly the DCCU has been doing performance wise. The only benefit would be to DC. Also it creates the problem of where the hell was Superman when Loki was trying to take over the world, when Malekieth tried to destroy the world, when Ultron was mucking about with Sokovia, etc.

DC's best asset is Batman and his villains. Superman is recognisable but hasn't really performed well movie wise for years. Batman has THE most iconic villain in The Joker and they cut his screen time in Suicide Squad. The DCCU is not going to be as commercially successful as the MCU is, why would Marvel and Disney want to jeopardise their successful superhero franchise for something that has no benefit for them?

They did it quite well in thee comic books by employing the old Parallel Dimension ploy. Both teams were sucked into a third dimension, where all of the action took place. Cliche, sure, but it worked for "Star Trek," and Supergirl is a different reality than the rest of the DC comics TV characters, and it worked okay there.

As for one group benefiting from the other group's success, that's pretty much what Sony did with Spiderman in "Captain America, Civil War," so it's not like that's never happened before, either.

But Spider-Man is a Marvel Character, the Justice League isn't. Fox owns the rights to the X-Men so Marvel Studios are getting round that by referring to "Mutants" as "Inhumans" and not using any recognisable X-Men characters. Sony has struggled making a good Spider-Man movie, the Amazing Spider-Man movies fell flat, had they been successful then I doubt Sony would've been so forthcoming with allowing the use of Spider-Man in the MCU. As it is, allowing the use of Spider-Man benefits them. There is no benefit to the MCU in using the Justice League.

I think that would be a horrendous idea. They would spend hundreds of millions of dollars for a movie that has no stake and would not be tied anyway into the current storylines. Whatever happened in the movie could and would never be addressed. It would be a throwaway movie. Some things play well on comic book pages but shouldnt ever be considered for the big screen. This is one of those ideas.

People would utterly despise the film. The fanboys would be up in arms that the other brand comic book characters are in their movie.

But Spider-Man is a Marvel Character, the Justice League isn't

That's the same conditions that were present with the several Marvel/DC crossovers in the comic books, but they still made it work.

As it is, allowing the use of Spider-Man benefits them. There is no benefit to the MCU in using the Justice League.

Certainly there is. The comic book superhero franchise is booming right now, whether those characters belong to Marvel, DC, some other publisher, or are simply original characters. Granted, not every movie is a blockbuster, but they all attract their audience, and they have all managed to turn a profit. It's like all of the other movie trends before. Not every Western was "Shane," High Noon," or "Rio Bravo," but they all made their contribution to keeping the genre going and keeping the fans interested for decades. Superhero movies aren't going to be this popular forever (frankly, I doubt that they will last more than another 5 years, tops) but, while they are, any chance to make a profit on a movie is most likely going to be taken. I can't see very many fans of either DC or Marvel boycotting the movies, just because the other group has infringed on their favorites.

They would spend hundreds of millions of dollars for a movie that has no stake and would not be tied anyway into the current storylines.

So, it would be a stand alone movie. Hollywood makes them all the time. That, or some screen writers would come up with a way to actually tie them together, the same way that MCU will supposedly be incorporating the Fantastic Four and the X Men into their universe within the next few years. The Watchmen aren't supposed to exist within the regular DCCU, either, but Dr Manhattan was used a few tears ago to straighten out some of the mistakes that the "New 52" reboot of all the DC characters had caused. If there's a way that seems even slightly likely, and someone in Hollywood can make a strong enough pitch, I have no doubt that the movie, or some variation on the idea, like, maybe, a Batman/Captain America team up, will happen.

What Bendis said years ago and it's still true and what will prevent corporations from spending millions of dollars in making a crossover movie. I added the emphasis. Unless all of their movies tank and comic book movies go back to being Steel and Batman & Robin bad, you won't even hear tell of it happening.

Also, there’s that element where people don’t want to see Marvel and DC beat up Lex Luthor – they want to see Marvel [heroes] vs. DC [heroes]. They want to see Thor vs Superman, and then either Thor or Superman have to get their ass kicked for it to matter. And neither company wants that, you know… ‘It has been stated that Superman is stronger than Thor.’ They don’t want it, neither company would want that. And they’re all billion-dollar characters now, so no one’s interested in making [one of] them cooler than the next, so… I get it. People want a loser. The reason ‘Civil War’ [comic] was successful was somebody lost, and they were shocked: ‘Oh my God, somebody lost!’ You know, they didn’t shake hands at the end [unlike in the movie version in which they did] and go: ‘Well then, we’ve both seen the light of day.’ You want to see Thor with his foot on Superman’s neck just grinding it in. That’s all they want to see.

I would hate that to be honest - Marvel and DC have completely different philosophies on heroes and what that means. The two don't really jive.

Fox owns the rights to the X-Men so Marvel Studios are getting round that by referring to "Mutants" as "Inhumans" and not using any recognizable X-Men characters.

Are you talking about the Inhumans tv show? Because that's comics based.
