I was saddened to hear yesterday of the death of John Peel, the legendary BBC Radio One DJ and broadcaster. He died whilst on the "holiday of a lifetime" in Peru. He had been with Radio One since it first went on air in 1967 and was well known for championing new, innovative, non-mainstream music. Many artists owe their careers to John.

His death will be a great loss to the broadcasting and music industries.

My thoughts are with his family.

Bah. the disrespectful little "charming people" around here wouldnt have a clue who he is :argue:

i was so shocked to here this. he was only 65 and one of those DJs who really gave a ****. (oh yeah i forgot people round here still fear words)

the man shaped the british music scene for 40 years and he'll probabley get replaced by Scott Mills or worse yet more hip hop !

i mainly lisen to XFM these days but im really kicking myself cos i've been saying how i should have lisened to his show more for ages and not got round to it.

t'was a sad day for lovers of good music 🙁

In case anyone was wondering why yer old Uncle Pointy is so upset about the death of an old Brit radio DJ, here is a list from today's Times of some of the better known bands and artists that John introduced to UK listeners and, in the case of UK acts, to the World -

1970s: David Bowie; Marc Bolan; The Faces (featuring Rod Stewart); Bob Marley & The Wailers; The Ramones; The Undertones; The Sex Pistols; The Clash; The Cure; The Fall; Joy Division/New Order

1980s: Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5; The Smiths; Billy Bragg; The Pogues; Jesus & Mary Chain; Public Enemy; The Wedding Present;The Bhundu Boys (breakthrough Zimbabwean band); Pixies; Nirvana; Happy Mondays

1990s: PJ Harvey; Orbital; Pulp; Blur; Elastica; Belle and Sebastian

Some list, eh? IMO John was without a doubt one of the biggest influences on the UK (and even World) music industry. What's more is that he wasn't a typical show-biz egomaniac but a down-to-earth, highly intelligent, warm, witty, honest-to-goodness nice bloke...I never met him but I would've liked to (some friends of mine who were in a minor league indie band did meet John, which is how I know that the tributes to him describing him as such are true)

the man was a legend. he rocked with pink floyd in the 60s he was there and he stayed there. doing what had to be done for the greater good. getting new acts heard.

bands from across the country sent him demo tapes and he lisened to them. how many DJs would do that?

and like Mr. P says he was a nice guy. so many people would just be all like "oooh fu*k you i rocked with the pink floyd in 60s"
 
Just as an interesting aside - I was told today that John, who left the UK to work as a DJ for a Dallas station in the early sixties, can be seen in one of the famous photos of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald. Apparently he was sent to report on the Kennedy assassination. If I find the picture I'll post a link.
