Hey peeps,

I was just wondering if anyone else has seen the advert for Butter with Sid Vicious in it?

I was nicely sat drinking my cup of coffee when suddenly up he comes... saying something about how he like this butter, not because its British or anything (which he pointed out about 5 times), but because its the best.

Hmmm... I was disturbed! and yet i found it slightly funny too.

I mean, he went from Sex Pistols lead singer and general punk icon, to advertising BUTTER!!!!!

What is the world coming to???

WHAT? Sid Vicious.. On a NEW advert? I don't get it...isn't he dead? 🙂
 
Yeah, I think there's a bit of a mix-up here: Sid Vicious was the bassist who died 1979 due to an overdose. Johnny Rotten is the singer, who is a bit of a plonker sometimes and I wouldn't be surprised to see him doing a butter add.
I mean, they are both iconic and all, but you know. The Pistols right now are a bit Rolling Stonesy.

Anyway, to help you out:THIS is Sid Vicious and THIS is Johnny Rotten.

So it was Lydon that did it? I can see that. Lydon is a good cat. PIL was better than the Pistols.

Yeah I've seen this advert...the first thing my mum said was 'SELLOUT'.

I have to agree with her there.
 
They've been showing that advert here for a couple of weeks now, just looked like any other over the hill ex-celebrity doing any old advert for money haha.

They're getting increasingly common now.
 
Lydon is a joke these days...going on chat shows with his hard-ass, sweary punk attitude...for god's sake he is as old as I am these days. Sad old git should grow up...he was only an icon back in the day 'cos the Pistols were the most publicity-hungry punk band...there were many more capable and talented punk performers who earned a fraction of what he did and deserved much more...IHeartSpike's mum was spot-on with her 'Sellout'...Johnny-boy sold out round about the time of the Pistol's first reunion tour, if not before.

Why is it 'selling out' if he is the one with the 'talent' and 'fame' and the fame is fleeting, why not grab all the pieces of the pie you can get? honestly, what is there to rage against anymore? Metamucill? I say good going, Johnny, get all you can. If you have talent enough to put in you a position where you can make money on NOTHING but your name? Go for it. It's not selling out as much as cashing in.

Its selling out big time when you were the lead singer of a massive punk band.

Johhny Rotten was the lead singer, not John Lydon. Johnny Rotten was an invention of Malcolm McLaren, and nothing more. Lydon is an intelligent man with interesting views but people want Rotten. He is just giving them what they want. If he is selling out for doing that, than he has always 'sold out'

There is a difference between the artist and the art.

Both these quotes have some merit...DM you are right from the POV that Lydon has gone against punk's anti-establishment, anarchist principles that he allegedly espoused way back when...whereas scobro has obviously seen and learned from "The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle" ( The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle (1980) ) - the film about the Pistols told from McLaren's POV (and very much anti-Lydon) which was based on the premise that punk and the Pistols was a scam concocted by McLaren to make a shed load of cash - excellent point made about the difference between Rotten and Lydon btw.

Well, if you look at the body of work Lydon did Post-Pistols, he was much more than just a punk. In fact, he 'outgrew' that within a few months. He had a great career long after, and paved the way (at least in part) to the rap/metal phase that came on so strong.

I wouldnt say the Pistols were a scam, per se, as they all had the attitude needed. No more a 'scam' than the Beatles were for the influences of George Martin on their albums. In essence, and how I view them today, the Pistols were the first 'boy band' in the fact they were a manufactured band.

I do not recall seeing the movie you mention, but have seen many A&E and History docs on them so may have seen it at some point. Though, hearing the synopsis you have given for it, not sure I want to see it now.

Sorry to disagree but I find most of his PiL work unlistenable though I do get what you mean...he has been a great musical experimenter and collaborator...I did like the track he did with Afrika Bombata (sp?) though

If McLaren is to be believed it was a scam of Machiavellian proportions, orchestrated entirely by him...I tend not to believe McLaren however 🙂

Worth watching, if only for the classic Pistols footage. You've almost certainly seen excerpts from it in the form of the Sid-fronted videos for "My Way" and "Something Else" if nothing else...it is pretty much a McLaren vanity project but if you can get past that it's quite good fun.
