Joss and Noir...I think I get it now

I'm pouring through "Lynch on Lynch", by Chris Rodley, last couple of days. This book is like crack if you're a David Lynch fan"”highly addictive. Lynch is really kind of a naive kook in a way. Or, he tries to push himself into a sort of naive, intuitive mental space to make his art. There's a huge amount of improvisation in what he's doing. It seems like he sort of starts with thinking about physical sensations, then onto emotions, then a narrative starts to develop...

Anyways, he doesn't mention noir specifically so far (I'm up to Twin Peaks now), but it's there for sure. He did mention that Sunset Boulevard is one of his favorite films. It's interesting"”he was talking about Blue Velvet"”that it had to be in color. That it had to be highly saturated color in fact. Very intense blues, reds, greens. Early on, he tried washing out the color, making it almost black and white and it didn't have whatever effect it was that he wanted. But Blue Velvet still makes great use of light and shadow, that's very important I think. He wanted it to seem like a dream, which it does. I think noir needs to feel sort of dreamy, stylized"”more than some genres"”to work its mojo...

I wish Angel had been just a little more daring visually. It's a small quibble, in the grand scheme. But now I really wanna go back and look...

In the UK we're about half way through season 1 of Lost - we've just seen the Sawyer flashback ep.

If you have digital cable/satellite you can see next week's ep on the E4 channel straight after the one shown on terrestrial TV (Channel 4)...this is only good for one ep I guess, 'cos you'd have to watch the next ep on digital anyway 🙂

Yeah Channel Four picked up the rights for Lost along with Desperate Housewives. They planned to start season one in Januaray (when most new US shows start here) but they delayed it because of the success of DH. After DH was on four fourish months Big Bleedin' Brother came on for about four months, and then we got Lost. Channel Four clearly don't want more than one successful show on at once.
 
OK, a little OT, but...how do reality shows actually last more than, say, half a season? Once you've seen the first few eps, don't they just get kinda...old? The novelty is all that's interesting to me, usually. I guess the ones that are sorta like game shows could have a shelf life, but...

I'm glad there's sort of a mini-renaissance now with the new genre dramas.

In reality TV shows they just add more T & A, more arguments and flashy gimmocks.

There's something about voyeurism too, I think. Like getting to watch what might be happening in your neighbor's house. A similar impulse, I think.
