Joss' Best Character

This is a poll from Buffy/Angel/Firefly/Dr. Horrible. I didn't want to put this in the Whedonverse section, but I don't think much people use that. :/ Someone can move it I guess though...

Ok, it's actually not a poll, because I'm lazy.

I think the obvious, Buffy, is my choice. She's just so different from every other superhero out there. Next would be Dr. Horrible.

I don't know, it would be a weird toss up between Spike and Mal.
But, for such different reasons there would be little way to debate it out in my head. So, I guess I'm glad it's not a real poll.

Of course, then I'd have to add that I'm amazed the things the man did with Cordelia.

Best character? He's got so many good ones that it's really hard for me to choose a favorite. I change my mind almost hourly.

This is really difficult, because Whedon don't really do original characters. He simply spins arche/stereotypes into something (more or less) new, and it then becomes difficult determine exactly how much credit he should get.

I'd probably say Buffy because of the intense influence she's had on popular culture. However there are a lot more interesting and complex characters amongst his. River is one, she had a lot of potential, but was left somewhat unfulfilled. Spike is another complex character with depth, unfortunately he's not one of my favourites on a personal level. Anya is another good one, but once again her potential was somewhat squashed by the use of her as comic relief instead of fully developing the emotional turmoil a transition from "demi-god" to human would have brought with it.

So basically I don't know. I might return later once I have made up my mind.

He did create an Icon with Buffy, but as fans of the show we see everything else beyond the Iconic status, we see the complex character of Buffy (and everyone else... so glad to have this show....)

I say Angel or Faith, those characters are written so well and are both extremely complex when you analyze them fully.

[Urgent Power]

Nobody appreciates Snyder enough. Maybe not THE best character, but this character is genius. I don't think the best character has to be a regular or one of the main ones. I know they get plots and story lines and credit, but I'm sure that if there were those things for characters such as Snyder, they'd be counted as best (or very good) characters.

All of Joss' characters have tons of reasons why they're 'the best,' but it really depends on what you think makes one character better than another. That being said, even though she's far from my favorite, I've gotta say his best character is Buffy, even if she isn't quite as layered as a lot of her counterparts (Wesley, Willow, Spike, etc.). To be honest, I'd probably say someone else if she hadn't been the character that started it all, but regardless, the entire concept behind her is brilliant.

I've gotta say Wesley, he's not neccessarily my favourite character (nearly, but not quite) and he just evolved and went off-track and on-track and had so many character aspects that make him such a layered individual that I think he's teh best -made character.

 

[Angelic Slayer]

I love all of the Buffyverse characters, but I think that in terms of Joss' best written character (most intriguing, out of the ordinary, most depth, etc...) I would have to give this one over to Spike.

When we first met him, he wasn't like any other villain. He was the vampire without a soul bad guy, who was head over heels for somone? Who cared about what happened to her? Then as time went on, seeing him as "William", the younger vampire days, as a chipped vampire, as a souled vampire.... he really did have a lot of sides to him that I wouldn't have expected from the blonde.

In "Halloween" I think it was, we see him spying on Buffy, studying her technique with almost appreciation of some kind. He admits later that he's a creeper of the night, but that he doesn't want to end the world: plain and simple. He makes friends with the Scoobies... just all around, he was the bad guy but at the same time just not. And I like that in a character, from a writer's perspective they could have really gone in ANY direction with him. Which I think is the mark of a very, very strong character.

Just me though, how I looked at it 🙂
