Joss Confirms no Serenity sequel...

Hi boys and odd, smooth, compellingly bumpy non-boys. I'm in Liverpool, on Alexis' lap... sorry, laptop, checking in and seeing all sorts of nonsense about a sequel to something. I did run into someone at Forbidden Planet, and he said something about that I ought to make more things, possibly art things, and I agreed. He didn't know the fellow I was with was Brian Hitch but it was 'cause I'm so, yeah, awesome. Yes, Warren and Natalie and Brian and I had dinner, after nattering on for SFX at the hotel (I like that mag) and it was blazingly fun. They're all three multitalented, urbane, and surprisingly sweet. I'm none of those things but I came the farthest so they had to be nice. BUT...

There's no sequel, no secret project regarding Serenity or somesuch and I'm not even sure how anyone thought there was talk there. I've seen Nathan and Tim (and Summer and Alan) recently because they're my friends because I'm so, yeah, awesome. So let's put that to bed and smother it with a pillow.

Fun fact: Didn't read the thread, but as for James playing Shinzon: that's the reason he left for darkest Africa at the end of season six. We were giving him the time off to do the film. When it didn't happen, the course was already set. But he got a nifty soul and that worked out okay.

Oh, and I heard Marvel pushed back X-Men 18? I've delivered 19, and Johnny's working steadily, so blame the marketplace. In fact, overturn the marketplace, the way Jesus did when he was cranky about that thing that time.

Interesting...maybe people will start to believe me when I tell them this stuff.

I said there'd be no spin off with Spike....people mocked.
I said that Firefly wouldn't last a season...people called me a fool.
I recently said 'Serenity wouldn't get a sequel' and people said 'they always say that'.

I'm sorry for the fans, but honestly, I don't think its a loss to the movie world.

I don't understand that bit about James and Shinzon. Wish I did. Sounds like if it's not a joke, it's worth knowing, and if it is a joke, I'd like to get it.

Apparently there's been some controversy about all this. The guys at Whedonesque say Joss wasn't saying there's never going to be any kind of Serenity sequel. They say Joss was just deflating a particular rumor concerning a sequel. They're not happy about the way the story was picked up to suggest some kind of end to the whole Serenity story.

If you missed all the fun, at the weekend Joss responded to the latest Serenity sequel rumour and quite rightly knocked it on the head. Several sites picked up on what he said and took his remarks to mean that there would be never be a sequel to Serenity. This, in turn, has unsettled a number of people in the fandom.

Well yeah he didn't say there will never be a sequel, only that they're not about to make one now.. All I know is that Ron and Alan told me personally –*yea yea and hundreds of other people at Collectormania – that there might definitely be one some day. I mean I don't keep my hopes up or anything, but hey, it could happen I guess..

I would hope that there would be. I was one of those people that never watched Firefly when it aired, no reason for why I didn't I just didn't. Oh how I regret not watching it sooner. I only watched it because of working with the guys at LFCC so I gave in and bought the boxset. I was halfway through when I remembered that it was cancelled 🙁

It truly was a great show so I would love it if there was a further movie, tv or cinema I don't care I just want some more.

What did you say after firefly was canceled? It wouldn't get a movie?

And I took this to mean there is no sequel at the moment, not that it wouldn't happen ever!! I will cling to every last bit of hope there is!!

Nothing new "for now."

October 9, 2006 - When TV producer and filmmaker Joss Whedon suggested smothering rumors of a Serenity sequel with a pillow, he was caught off guard by the reaction of fans and news websites. As a result, he posted some follow-up comments at Whedonesque explaining just what he meant and his feelings now that the Firefly franchise has ground to a halt.

"There are two very separate worlds: the marketplace, and the bustling bazaar that is my brain. The brain place is crowded with goods, ideas, sequels, spinoffs, animated versions, miniseries, radio dramas... Once I create a 'verse, I never let go of it.

"I'll be very, very clear. There is no news. Not never, just [not] now." (Emphasis added.)

Whedon's desires are at odds with the realities of the film and TV industries. When Fox cancelled Firefly - arguably due to poor marketing and mismanagement - Whedon's heart "got broke," as he puts it. Serenity didn't make up for it, and its lackluster showing at theaters is undoubtedly a major reason for the lack of interest by the studio in continuing the franchise.

Maybe Firefly isn't quite dead yet. Whedon has ideas and a willingness to go forward with more stories in the Firefly universe. But if anything does happen one day - and that's a big "if" - it won't resemble the Firefly series we remember. Events in the movie have seen to that.

What possibilities remain? Perhaps a spin-off series one day - like Angel was to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. On the other hand, Whedon's busy with new projects, projects which will lead to new franchises if successful. His attention is currently focused on Wonder Woman. That's out in 2007, and expect Whedon to make more of them if audiences like the first one.
