We've all heard of Cabin in the Woods right?

Just in case, it's a horror film Joss Whedon and Drew (BTVS, ATS, Lost, Cloverfield) Goddard are working on. At this point its working title is Cabin in the Woods. It's in pre-production slated for a 2010 release. Not a lot is known about it, but it's most often described as a twist on the Horror trope that goes people are stranded in a cabin in the woods, then stuff happens.

They are starting to put it together though, and now the fun begins. Now the rumors start.

First some background. Cabin in the Woods has attracted the attention of the broader fandom of Horror films. Those guys are kind of like us (well Hell, some of them are us), they feed like guppies on every little tidbit of info that floats by. They're are sites all over the internet. Just like with us.

One of the sites is called Bloody-disgusting.com, and there's a guy there who this site refers to as "The Perez Hilton of the horrorverse". He refers to himself as "MrDisgusting".

MrDisgusting offered up a story at Bloody-disgusting.com claiming Jena Malone of Donnie Darko and The Ruins...

had been tapped for Cabin in the Woods.

All's right with the world so far except Whedon.info posted a quote from Joss which says it's not true, and there's more...

"This is misinformation. While we are fans of both those actors, neither is attached to the movie. Just FYI."

"However, they ARE attached to the Serenity sequel."

"Oh. Also, they got the plot wrong."

"In order to protect the story from spoilerization, we’ve been sending out our OWN misinformation, including fake sides for the actors, fake summeries, different names... So there’s gonna be a lot of ’information’ leaked that will lead to excited speculation about things you will not see. Sorry. But here’s some stuff you CAN look forward to, my word on it:

1) A person will have an emotion.

2) two people speaking, or "dialogue", may occur.

3) A bunch of different people will play the part of Bob Dylan.

Hope that clears everything up. More updates soon!"

Joss Whedon - "Cabin in the Woods" Movie - New York Times Misinformation !

And that brings other web writers such as this one to come to the conclusion "it's a project relying on the novelty and surprise of its subverted scenario, and it's looking like the filmmakers involved are going to great lengths to shield the truth and keep that surprise fully intact."

Apparently this is outraging MrDisgusting. He posts a reply in the comments section of his Jenna Malone story "If they start playing games with us, I'll write a full synopsis for the script and tell everyone what it's about.... no reason to screw with our lively hood. JOSSSSSSSSSSSS, cut it outttttttttt"

Ooh scary. The Perez Hilton of the horrorverse has laid down the law to Joss.

One problem with that. The threat won't work. Joss just told us there will be misinformation on the plot and other details out there. We're familiar with that sort of thing. We've seen a phoney Spike as male slayer script with Angel, a faux script for the Buffy finale, and a story description for a since-proven-false Ice Age Buffy movie, or some such thing. We're not likely to believe a "full synopsis for the script" from the Perez Hilton of the horrorverse, especially when Joss tells us to watch for fakes. All Mr. Perez...er...pardon me Disgusting has done is call into question whatever credibility he may have had, and further question anything like a plot synopsis which doesn't come directly from Joss.

So basically...haha. : king : (Couldn't find a Nelson from The Simpsons smilie)

Hmm, see here is the problem with you summary.

The big reviewers ARE given an accurate synopsis, BUT they are also told what they can and can't say.
This would also be the sites they are linked with.

Most reviewers respect this because the 'talent' will then give them the scoop next time BUT what they can do is post it on another forum then link it.

As I said, the reason they don't do this is out of courtesy and out of a need to keep the movie makers on side for all access for the future projects.

The fact is, MANY movies release a fair amount of accurate information and we're still surprised with the end product.

Also, if he does release a full synopsis closer to the time of release and it IS accurate, well quite frankly it doesn't matter if you believe it 100% or not, you will read it (if you are that sort of person) so when the movie starts to follow the synopsis you will sit there and know what is going on.
Then when you leave, you will go online and say 'Oh, MrDisgusting was right'.

He gets alot of recognition for telling the truth, Joss has egg on his face because his plan to play silly beggars had its bluff called and we all lose because this just descends into a farce.

Well here's the problem with that EB. I don't know if you're classifying MrDisgusting as a "big reviewer", but there's no reason to believe he got his information from Joss. He only says he was "tipped off".

If you read the Whedon Watch threads staked in this forum you'll discover there are many cases of stories in Whedonverse past which turned out to be false. Often you'll hear something like "reliable sources" referenced with such stories. In fact when you hear such labels you can almost take it to the bank the story is bogus.

My point is the Whedonverse has a storied past of false rumors from all forms of media claiming all sorts of sources. In the face of that trying to insinuate a network of trust and credibility just doesn't wash. I'm not saying Joss planted bogus stories at this point. I'm just saying there have been a lot of false stories concerning the Whedonverse in the past.

Keeping details from the media on upcoming projects isn't something Whedon invented. An actor was fired from the last Indiana Jones movie for revealing details. Security on some sets is military tight to secure secrecy. Nor is misdirection something first thought of by Joss. It was done with Cloverfield. I've heard of it being done with other films as well. Bogus scripts have been planted on other projects. There's many examples of such stuff.

Joss says there will be "misinformation". You won't know whether a story is true or not. I believe him. That doesn't necessarily mean he's going to give say the NY Times false plot details. He might however leave a phoney script lying around where somebody he knows to be an informant might get at it.

In that environment it won't matter if MrDisgusting somehow gets something right, or not. There will be many more quote, unquote "reliable sources" stories pop up with differing details concerning this project in the next couple of years. Remember how many claims there were from actresses claiming they were going to be the next Wonder Woman when Joss was involved with that one?

The Jena Malone story may be true for all I know. However discerning followers of the Whedonverse won't believe it until she, Joss, or somebody else directly involved says so, or somebody snaps a picture of her on the set acting.

As far as the plot goes, what matters, is what you go into the theater believing. The Whedonverse is riddled with stories which turned out to be false. If the story does not come directly from Joss Whedon, Drew Goddard, or somebody equally well connected in the form of a quote you have no way of knowing if it's true, or not. All stories not from him will have a credibility problem. There will be many such stories. Which one will you believe if you should be wise enough to be sitting there munching your popcorn?

He's big enough for you to post an equivalent of 2 sides of A4 paper going on (and on and on) about him and his comments.

I don't know if he's just some no mark or the biggest thing in movie reviewing on your side of the pond - I don't read reviews online (I rarely click links on this site to be honest) I have 3 people I will listen to when reviewing movies, Mark Kermode, Kim Newman and (to my shame) Jonathan Ross - anyone else, not interested.
The ONLY thing I have to go on is the fact that in your comment he is likened to Perez Hilton, who I know of, and the fact you have given air to his claims.

No offence but there are few people who have the windbaggery levels higher than mine on this board and you're definitely one of them, and that often bores me.
When I see some posts that take up the entire screen, unless I am 100% into it, then I don't read - the Whedon Watch threads tend to go on a bit.

The only reason this one caught my attention and kept it is because right now reading your comments is slightly better than the absolute bordem I am facing thanks to this snow bringing London to a halt.

I will be highly amused if it turns out there really is a Serenity sequel, and those two really are in it, and they threw that info out there knowing we'd assume it was a joke.

Jena Malone looks like she could be Kaylee's little sister.

Now what I just heard you say there was "I have no actual point here, so I'd best just play the man".

No offense, but that's kind of lame. You could have just said "Good point".

Oh and sorry to hear about all the snow. We had to shovel a lot of global warming off our walks here this winter too.

Thats not quite what I said, what I said was I hadn't read the 'Whedon Watch' thread and gave my reasons.

Doesn't devalue any point I made here.

ALOT is said around the internet and there is quite difficulty in differentiating between the crap and and the accurate.
Your posts, the occasionally amusing, are generally your point of view coated in a tone to suggest its fact.
I'm not having a go at that, I'm pretty sure alot of people will say that about my posts, my point is I don't read everything you write because you go on.
It doesn't mean you had a 'good point' (doesn't mean you don't either - how can I judge, I haven't read it😛).

As for the 'Global Warming' comment, well I know your stance on that, fair game, but I would just point out that this is a very odd occurence, last time it happened was 18 years ago and while I definitely don't buy into 'Global Warming' as an unnatural effect we are causing, there is definite proof of 'Climate Change' - though I don't believe we have any corol over it.

So if I edit out the ad hominem your point appears to be you don't want to read the Whedon Watch thread, so you can't check my references when I say there has been tons of false stories involving the Whedonverse. I use that to suggest you can expect more of the same between now and 2010 when Cabin in the Woods comes out, so it might be wise to take all unconfirmed rumors with a grain of salt, and not take big-talkers seriously whose credibility exists only in their own minds.

Very Well I'll save you a trip to Whedon Watch and list some of the false stories I can remember off the top of my head.

* Phony script for The Chosen purporting to be original.

* Phony script for Angel Season 5 #1 introducing Spike as male slayer.

* NBC to buy the Buffy series, and continue it. "Reliable source" mentioned.

* Some minor British punk singer to be in upcoming Buffy movie as male slayer.

* Claims by WB to be interested in Faith, or Spike made for TV movies.

* Buffy movies.

* One that was either a Joss Whedon novel, or Joss to make a movie based on somebody else's novel.

* All kinds of so an so is going to be the next Wonder Woman stories.

* Joss Whedon to write script for Sailor Moon movie.

There's lots more, but those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

Edmund Blackadder agrees: Still - windbaggery😛

Still - windbaggery:p
So let's us 2 step back from stating the obvious then, and wait for somebody who'd actually like to discuss what the thread is supposed to be about.

The problem is how do a couple of windbags decide who gets the final word?

Oh, all right...go ahead. You get one free shot. After that we seriously have to get back on topic. Do it with Karma though so this isn't prolonged. Make it negative karma if you like. I dont care (but board acceptable OK.)

Rumours aside, I hope this is a good film that gets a good theatrical release because I like horror films when done right and OK I did like 'The Strangers' of last year but seriously, proper horror films that I like have been few and far between in recent years.
