Nothing too spoilery, but some good background stuff.

Newsarama: When word broke that you planned to partner with writer Brian Lynch and continue Angel's adventures where the final episode left off, the decision was met with pretty unanimous praise. But do you feel any pressure about picking up from what many fans regard as the perfect ending to a TV show?

Joss Whedon: Actually, a lot of people thought it was a cliffhanger, so they can't be too sad.

NRAMA: Fans seem very concerned about "official canon" (which is something Brian references in a very funny way in issue #1 of his Spike: Shadow Puppets in June. Do you understand the uproar? What does "canon" mean to you?

JW: Canon is key, as is continuity. If you are massive nerd. Which I am. I believe there's a demarcation between the creation and ancillary creations by different people. I'm all for that stuff, just like fanfic, but I like to know what's there's an absolutely official story-so-far, especially when something changes mediums, which my stuff seems to do a lot.

NRAMA: What was it about Brian Lynch's work on Spike: Asylum that got you thinking he'd be the right person to develop this book with you?

JW: The voices. Not just of the characters from the show but everybody. I knew from the moment [at the beginning of Asylum] Spike took the job he didn't want because the guys thought he was Angel and he felt pissy that this was gonna happen with Brian. I even emailed Tim Minear about it that night.

NRAMA: Along the lines of "why him," let's also look at "why now?" Did your work on the Buffy comic book rekindle a desire to revisit these characters? Or had you always planned to get back to them at some point?

JW: Brian gets the cred. I ran into him at a restaurant and Asylum was coming out that day so I figured, gotta read it. Read it. See above. I can't make the same kind of commitment that I'm making to Buffy, but I thought Brian could handle being the show-runner with continued input"”and a basic rundown on where were heading"”from me.

NRAMA: Without spoiling anything, can you give fans any idea of what they can expect to see, or not see, in the comic?

JW: Season six"”that is, the storyline we were planning to pursue"”made much more epic and fleshed out quite a bit. We're looking at it as a 12-issue miniseries, to keep it tight and intense. Brian and I have been exchanging juicy ideas. And some that are more bran-y. For health.

NRAMA: Finally, when the show itself ended, did you have an idea in your head of where things would go? Did you know all along who would, or wouldn't, survive that fight in the alley?

JW: I've always known exactly, unless someone brings me a better idea. (It was Jeff Bell and the Angel staff who pitched me Wesley's death"”once we knew we'd got the chop.) The better idea makes it to the canon. But the line up is pretty much what I planned. It's not pretty.

In a perfect world, these shows wouldn't have to live on through comics - some network would suddenly decide to revive them both. 😀 And manage to miraculously get the cast back.

I'd think I'd be more eager to read an "Angel" continuation than Buffy. Especially since that ending was a cliffhanger of sorts and Buffy's finale had an actual sense of closure.

Aah, slightly bummed it's only a 12 issue mini. But things keep evolving...especially with these comics. Waitin on my Spike: Asylum TPB to arrive, gotta get a feel for Lynch's take on the characters.

I bet they're gonna be 4 bucks a pop, like most of the IDW books. Pricey.
 
So, when are they going to start releasing these and is it Dark Horse comics or...? Don't know much about Buffy comics, the season 8 comics are the first Buffy comics I have bought.

Too ad Angel season 6 is going to be 3 episodes (12:4=3).
 
The release date hasn't been confirmed, but it sounds pretty for sure that something will be done. The publishing company for Angel has been IDW. When word first came out IDW was going to be doing an Angel series they hinted the whole series was going to be canon. Whedon later distanced himself from it, and they had to fess up it was no more canon than the Dark Horse Buffy series was.

I read the first 2. I found them over-priced, and not terribly inspiring. I've heard it suggested the later issues got better as new writers were added. Personally I'm not as optimistic about these as I was Buffy 8. It's going to be fun to see how Angel and his crew get out of the alley though.

Thanks for the info nerd4hire.🙂 I would really like to read all the previous Buffy (Dark Horse comics) & Angel comcis (IDW Publishing) but I don't have it in me to hunt them down, if it's even possible. And if they are not canon I probably won't bother. Buffy season 8 however is awesome, in my opnion and if Joss will do Angel season 6 mini-series I will be all over it.

BTW, you said you were optimistic about Buffy season 8. Does it mean you: a)thought they were (season 8 comics) going to be good but didn't like them or
b)you do like season 8
 
What I liked about the Buffy 8 concept when it was put forward was the personal connection Joss was going to have with it. He was going to write a respectable sized chunk of them himself. I also liked the writing crew he had lined up to work with him, and the idea he was going to take an active personal role in everything that was done to put the story out. And yeah I'm really enjoying Buffy 8 so far.

About the not pretty comment, I think it's safe to say that Angel is alive, lol. Spike aswell, probably. Gunn is definately dead and the only person I'm not sure on is Illirya. Logically if Angel & Spike survived, she should have aswell but who knows. If it's going to be not pretty I think she's dead too.
So that leaves us Spike & Angel.
 
I'm curious to see which Season 6 rumors were true. Sounds like...Joss is saying he wants to basically stick to their original plan, but now there's just more freedom to make it even more epic.

There was talk of it being post-apocalypty, Oz coming back to help Nina, Illyria getting de-Fredded somehow, split apart. How much of that stuff was just fan rumor mongering that made its way onto the Net?

The only thing I've read for sure was the Angel-as-Road Warrior comments from David Fury. How would this all be reconciled with what's happening in Buffy 8 I wonder...
 
God, I'm so happy this is in the planning stages. Out of the two shows, Angel needed the continuation more than Buffy. But now both shows are getting continued. Its like God is telling me everything is going to be okay, because Joss is writing his characters again ^_^

About the 12 issues only thing, I have mixed feelings. I hoped it would be longer, but this will resolve everthing much faster. I like my epic stories to eventually have conclusions.

Several years ago, there was a series of adventure books called "The War Lord" that involved either the entire state of California or a large portion of it being cut off from the rest of the world by the formation of some sort of inpenetratible barrier. Angel 6 could be something like that, with a large area sealed off from the rest of the world by the Senior Partners to contain Angel and his allies while the war rages on. They could even work some sort of spell where the rest of the world doesn't know anything about it, thus eliminating the hope of outside assistance by Buffy or any of her forces (of course, there would most likely be at least a few new Slayers in the area who could be recruited). They could do it something like that.
 
Great news so i'll be ecstatic when they write Angel telling the scoobies to

I hope they do defred Illyria and get Wes back....destroy the senior partners too!

I agree, but from what I have heard and read in the years since the shows' cancellation, the two title actors were ready to move on, anyway. I'd rather see the cancellation while everyone was still enjoying the challenge of their roles in the show than to have them just walking through the parts the way a lot of long running series actors have.

It kinda sucks, but it makes sense to a point. As far as I know, IDW very rarely does anything but mini-series - and at that, very rarely any mini-series that aren't based on some kind of television or film property.

Hm. "Not pretty?" I wonder how that will interfere with the Angel books IDW has already been putting out for the past couple of years - all of their books so far have depicted everyone from the alley surviving mostly unharmed.
