A Joss Whedon Q-and-A has to have three specific elements if it’s going to be deemed successful. There must be a softball question that allows Nathan Fillion the chance to confirm his seat at the head of Whedon’s cool-kid table. There must be a teary fan thanking Whedon for … well, for being Whedon. (Today’s example was a weeping woman who stood in line since 1 a.m. for the chance to tell Joss that Buffy gave her someone to look up to. The director was eternally gracious and looked like he wanted to come down off the stodgy panel and give this woman, a true fan, a hug.)

Finally, there has to be at least one Marvel question. So while Whedon was in Austin to promote Shakespeare – notably his light, airy adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing, he paused ever so briefly to answer a question about the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV pilot. Acknowledging the presence of seemingly-deceased Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) on the panel – Gregg plays Leonato in the Much Ado ensemble – Whedon tried to explain how the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent returns from the dead.

“I’ll tell you guys this, Heimlich,” Whedon joked, before effectively clamming up about the show. “I can’t talk about it,” he admitted, but said that he did bring Coulson back from the dead for the ABC drama. “Yes. For realsies.”

When pressed for a bit of information about the pilot, Whedon said that while he loves diving into the spectacle that comes with The Avengers, he’s also interested in the people who are “under foot” in the massive battles, but who “didn’t win the lottery and aren’t super” but need to deal with the fall out of an alien attack. He thinks the pilot turned out better than expected, and he thinks his interest in those agents will keep audiences coming back week after week.

Count on the girl who cried at the microphone to DVR Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. program if and when it airs.

I love this write up, it's so true! Fillion does have a tendency to confirm his place as head of the cool table (as he should)
There is always a fan who thanks him and a question on the avengers!

But I'm also skeptical about taking this to actually mean he brings him back from the dead.

Hehe yeah the article is good. I always thought he would bring him back, but I'd rather be surprised than know for sure anyway.

To be honest, and I'll reserve total judgement until after I see the series, I'm not sold on the idea of bringing Agent Coulson back. I just don't...see the need for it, really. He was a pure supporting character in every sense. His death was used as a plot device to further The Avengers' bonding arc. He wasn't a main character at all. The plot or story doesn't exactly call for him.

I would be perfectly fine with flashbacks that involve him, but to physically bring him back from the dead seems pretty weird. Especially when you consider that they aren't likely to involve many of the actual Avengers cast members in it (although I'm sure we'll see cameos, especially towards the beginning).

I was fine with the deaths and subsequent returns of Buffy and Angel, and even Spike because he was so awesome in Angel S5, but there just doesn't seem to be any real need for Coulson to return, other than just Joss likes him.

But yeah, that article was good, and really true. I like Nathan Fillion as much as the next guy, but the obsessive fan love he gets is a little over the top sometimes.

When I watched The Avengers I left thinking Fury had told the Avengers that Coulson was dead to get a reaction from them, but we never saw him actually dead. It was never stated or showb as a fact (I'm reaching, I know 😉). I think he never died and that's how Whedon can "raise him from the dead."

Personally, I found Coulson to be my favourite character across the films. The only superhero that I really enjoy is Thor so I am more than happy to try out this series. Plus Clark Clegg is endlessly watchable.

Yeah I though Clark Gregg stole the scenes he was in, so got elevated past the supporting role he was initially in, and became a character you actually cared about.

Yeah I had the same thought Kean, that he never actually died, which is why I question the 'raise from the dead' part of article, the article says that not Whedon.

I loved his character and I'm glad that Joss is focusing on the "little guy" in this series. When I first saw the Avengers I thought he was dead, but upon rewatch (several times heh-heh), I could see how Fury might just be using it to motivate them. The blood on the cards was fake, so maybe the whole death was.

I actually rewatched it yesterday, and yeah it does leave it open. Especially how he says "They needed this"

I'm fine with them bringing him back, so to speak (really, it'll probably be that he never really died), but they need to really sell it. Make the deception something that is a big plot point and not something that just happens and is forgotten about right away. Given the history of Whedon shows, I don't think that will be that big of an issue.

The actual word "dead" was never used in conjunction with Agent Coulson. His exact words were, "Agent Coulson is down." The two words don't necessary mean the same thing. In fact, in military and law enforcement jargon, "Man down" simply means that medical assistance is required. Also, it wouldn't be the first time that a person was assumed dead on immediate examination,then later resuscitated. The most obvious example of that in the Marvel Universe was right there onboard the S H I E L D vessel. Captain America was "down" from the last days of World War 2 until the beginning of the 21t Century.

And, in addition to that, we're talking Joss Whedon here, known in some circles as "The Resurrection Kid." I won't say that he's raised more corpses than Jesus, but "death is just a temporary thing" seems to be his motto.

Maybe he'll bring Coulson back as a vampire. They have those in the Marvel Universe, I think.

My friend Jade said she doesn't think Coulson's dead, and that Fury only said that to give them the push they needed. I'm certainly glad he's going to be in the series, I just wish he was in the next film.

Also talking of the next film, I really hope there at least a little delving into Clint and Natasha's history together. Because I love those two, and I think they have an interesting history.

While talking to press at the Iron Man 3 world premiere, Joss Whedon, director of The Avengers and overseer of Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, could not avoid questions about his upcoming television series. Based in the same universe as the Marvel Studios films, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. follows a group of non-superpowered agents as they deal with the extraordinary issues the world faces in a post-Avengers reality.

Everyone knows aliens and Norse gods exist, but not everyone knows about how Agent Phil Coulson is alive and well. The Avengers may not know how the fan-favorite character played by Clark Gregg returns, but we now do.

What lays ahead are specific plot details and spoilers for The Avengers as well as the major reveal of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot.

While promoting Trust Me at the Tribeca Film Festival, Clark Gregg "“ who also writes and directs "“ chatted with us about his role in Joss Whedon's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Knowing that the live-action Marvel television series takes place in the same universe as the films and that it's based after The Avengers, we wanted to know how his seemingly return from death would play out and the implications of such a feat would have on the films and other characters.

He joked about all the online theories, ranging from Coulson returning as the character Vision, and talked about how Coulson's body was never shown, and how his (somehow bloody) Captain America cards were actually in his locker. As for what his return means for the headlining heroes?
Gregg: "It would be surprising to me if this was a world where there wasn't some reckoning for the fact that it'd be "¦ you know, some level of deception must have been perpetrated on the Avengers."

Deception was already presented by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in how he used the (covered in ketchup?) Captain America cards to motivate Tony Stark and Captain America to work together and do what needed to be done. According to a source of /Film, Coulson's return from death is explained by the same plot thread.

The source claims that Fury faked Coulson's death entirely to motivate The Avengers to "“ as the foreign title of the film emphasizes - assemble. Other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were involved with the cover-up but The Avengers (namely, Black Widow and Hawkeye) were not informed, not being of the proper "clearance" level. Coulson was put in hiding until for quite sometime until assigned his new task. Him faking the death and going silent is frowned upon by certain other S.H.I.E.L.D. members in the show.

The explanation does play up the idea of just how much of a believer Agent Coulson is for the cause, and his return in must result in an inevitable reappearance in the films as well. In Iron Man 3, Stark is unaware that Coulson is still alive, but come time for Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014, we expect Coulson may make a cinematic return appearance. After all, The Winter Soldier is essentially a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie and no one loves Cap more than Coulson.

We'll find out soon if Coulson's return really is as simple as this.

S.H.I.E.L.D. is expected to be picked up by ABC for a Fall 2013 premiere.
