Joss' Plans For Anya and Xander

Look at the commentary of Dirty Girls with Nicholas Brendon and the writer, they mention that Xander was supposed to die in Dirty Girls as appeare as The First in the rest of the episodes.
 
Well, I'd heard he was supposed to be killed by Caleb, but I'd never heard he was supposed to be in killed in season five. I doubt that part is true because none of us have really heard that and no one can find any cold hard facts to back it up. I also really doubt Joss (who recently shut down production on Dollhouse temporarily because he thought the scripts could be better) would compromise what he wanted to happen on the show for the sake of giving Nicholas Brendon a paycheck.

And I don't think the men in Buffy were portrayed as particularly weak. Xander may not have been the best fighter in the bunch, but he stood up to Buffy when he disagreed with her and at the same time always had her back when it counted anyway. Angel certainly wasn't a weak guy, as he went on to have his own ass-kicking spinoff. Giles was the most intelligent and seemingly mature guy in the bunch, and yet would kill an innocent if he thought the situation warrented it. Emotionally, he was not that weak.

I agree with ALL this statement except the bit bolded as I disagree purely on the Buffy eviction.

Mitigating circumstances aside, he didn't have her 'back' then.
 
I guess you're right, but I try to ignore that Buffy eviction scene because I think its perhaps the worst written scene of the entire series. I know they are all supposed to be scared, but Xander, Willow, Giles, Dawn have all been through scarier crap than Caleb and the way they all turn on Buffy in that scene (despite all they owe her and the fact that they are all more likely to die without her on their side) just seems so forced, out of character and ridiculous.
 
The only time I could think of that Xander didn't have Buffy's back was Empty Places, which quite frankly can't blame him for. Other times, he always had Buffy's back, even when she's doing something immoral like in S8.

Xander being killed in S5 was a well known plan Joss was playing with because they thought S5 was the last one. Xander was supposed to be Glory's double instead of Ben and be killed by Giles in The Gift.
 
Whether or not he knew the show was going to go on, I think Joss knew from Day 1 what he was going to do with each and every character. I think every one of them was brought in from the brilliance of his mind's stories, and even though I was so sad to see what eventually DID happen with Xander and Anya (I always wanted them to get back together), it was so heartbreakingly beautiful. 🙂

I heart Nick Brendon. 🙂 And Emma Caulfield...
