Buffy Goes Back To Basics

Joss Whedon, creator of UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, told E! Online that the upcoming seventh season will return to the show's roots. The current sixth season has featured darker storylines, including tales of addiction, kinky sex, disrupted marriages, kleptomania and disillusionment.

"This is where we wanted to go ... into the dark of the woods," Whedon told the site. "But next year is going to be very different. We're going back to our original mission statement. Back to the positive view of the joy of female empowerment. This year was about adult life and relationships--and making really, really bad decisions. Next year will still be scary and different and strange, but it will be more of a positive outlook. People will stop abandoning Dawn. Willow won't be a junkie anymore. Buffy won't be dead."

Next year's theme will be "Buffy, year one," Whedon added. "It's let's get back to the joy of this very simple concept, that this silly woman no one takes seriously is actually the most powerful woman in the world." As for the show's future, Whedon said, "We basically plot every year as a natural ending point of the show. I loathe stories that end in the middle, so we wrap it up at the end of the year. Every year. So next season, we've figured out the whole arc--who the bad guy is, what the general message is. Next year will be the end. And if there's another season, that will be the end, too." Buffy airs "Two To Go" and "Grave," the two-part season finale, at 8 p.m. ET/PT May 21.

thanks for posting this. some interesting info, i might add. well, except for the part about how they plan everything ahead of time. i knew that. and even if i didn't, it's good that they do. i can't wait to see how this season is resolved!

Not too sure what to think about this, "Buffy" was always about the empowerment of women, she was never a silly woman and never the most powerful woman in the world. She was the Slayer, destined to defeat the Vampires. Let's keep it that simple. Simple is good! 😉

People should not stop abandoning Dawn, she should go, she has no place in the lives of the Scoobies, she is a relic of the badly written Season 5! 🙄

As for planning Seasons ahead, I see no sign of that, that's why the last 2 seasons have been poor!

I haven't seen the first couple of seasons (I started watching s6) so I can't comment if this season's been poor. Buffy is a cool show, no matter what they do to it. I hope there is a season 8.

I'm glad about this. I'm not saying this season has been bad, I think it's just been too dark for it's own good. It's definitely been dramtic, but I loved season 3-- it still had the 'new' flavor of the first season, but it also started to get more drama. I hope that's what next year will be. Thanks for posting!

I agree with AngelsSoul. I loved season three. It had some of the best episodes. Season 6 has been like Season 4. It has been okay, but not really making you jump up for joy.

Yaaaay at last Buffy will become happier! I've started re-watching the early days of season 1 & 2 again and I wish they would try to go back to that sort of show again. Season 6 hasn't really matched up for me, I am a bit disappointed with it, but that news has made me look forward to season 7 🙂

A return to punning is always welcome... howoften do we laugh these days in comparison to the first 3 series. I miss those days so I'm glad to be going back there (bring on the cartoon for the same effect!)

i welcome them returning to their roots. like Joss said, this season was very dark and it included some very risque plots. but i cant wait for the next season to be shown.

Tara

Amber Benson has a contract for Season 7 and will apparently be in Season 7. I just hope they don't do the whole Jenny Calendar thing and bring her back as an illusion, and I seriously hope they don't do the whole Buffy/ Joyce thing and try to bring her back from the dead cos I personally feel that would ruin it completely.

Ohh yea! Back to the roots definitly sounds good to me. I agree that I haven't really enjoyed this season all that much, it was much to dark for me *and I usually like dark* and at parts I actually found it sort of boring. I've been rewatching some past eps and hopefully it'll go back to the dramtic, yet funny and enjoyable show it was. 😀

As for Amber coming back, all I can say is YAY! Although I read somewhere that Amber was coming back for season seven, not Tara, so I really don't know what the writers have up their sleves for the actress or character.

I know most didn't really like season 6 because it was "too dark". But if Buffy was always happy and never had problems a) it wouldn't be very realistic and b) it would get very boring. I personally liked season 6 even though it wasn't my favorite season. Also, if every season was simple and happy, then we wouldn't be so thrilled that season 7 is going back to the basics!

Don't get me wrong. I'm really excited, too, that it's going back to the basics next year! 😀
