Whedon To Direct Marvel's 'The Avengers'

By MIKE FLEMING | Tuesday April 13, 2010 @ 4:25pm EDT

I'm told Marvel Studios is in final negotiations for Buffy the Vampire Slayer series architect Joss Whedon to direct Marvel Studios' The Avengers. That's the fast-tracked film that would amount to an all-star team of Marvel superheros, including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), as well as SHIELD leader Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Other signature superheros will likely be involved, but I've listed the actors in active superhero duty. Whedon has been rumored for this job for awhile, and is high on the fanboy wish-list. He's an interesting choice: despite his writing/producing TV series resume, his lone feature directing effort, Serenity, was not a hit. After Iron Man 2, Marvel has three pictures left on a distribution deal with Paramount before it moves to Disney, and the studio has been churning them out. Iron Man 2 gets released in May, Captain America will begin shooting this summer in Europe, Thor is in production, and Marvel Studios just set Pete Sollett to direct Runaways, based on the comic book series created by Lost writer Brian K. Vaughan. Whedon has written installments of the latter, so he knows how to make those superheros fly. Marvel has considered all of the individual superhero movies to be an intro to The Avengers, so the wanna-see on this one will be huge. The film will be released in the first weekend of May, 2012.
Whedon To Direct Marvel Deadline.com

Deadline's a solid source, this is probably legit. If so, I'm looking forward to reading up on this for years to come 🙂

This is really cool news. Glad to see it confirmed at last.

Also, Joss Whedon is trending on twitter right now because of this. Geeker joy!

Joss riffing and improving with Robert Downey Jr, Sam Jackson and possibly Ed Norton. This will not be boring, whatever else it may be.

I said it on Twitter and I'll say it here...

I'm now taking bets on which Joss-verse actors Joss will cast. I'm not offering any odds on Eliza, though, 'cause...yeah.

Awesome news, though.

I'd take Amy Acker for Wasp. Or Scarlet Witch in a sequel (if the rights aren't tied up with Fox).

And if Wonder Woman was to put in a cameo appearance, that'd put the cat amongst the pidgeons.

oh my freakin god. Two of my favourite things, Whedon, and Marvel combined, this will be EPIC!

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. Ain't nothin' wrong in the world that a few more Avengers can't fix. You just can't EVER have too many Avengers.

I take it that you're referring to the white one?
yay! Joss-goodness, can't wait. This will definitely be a treat!

Holy crap thats insane! I don't even know what to say. This is going to be the crowning achievement of Whedons career.

Amy Acker as Wasp is very good casting, but he'll probably shoe-horn Eliza in.

Well, as long as he doesn't write it ... I'd hate to see Cap - or, really, ANY Avenger talk Buffy-speak.

Good Call. ouch.
I'm definitely anticipating a cringe-worthy line or two from some character. Joss' dialogue is always funny and fun, but sometimes he goes overboard with giving weird quippage to the wrong characters.

But he is apparently gonna be reworking Zak Penn's script"”which can only be a good thing.

I am NOT looking forward to seeing Jossverse actors; I get tired of that. I am sure with the amount of people in the union there are more than a handful he can work with time and time again. It tends to snap be back to reality when a see a common joss face interacting with another. Play to it sure, like in Maverick when Mel Gibson stops a train robbery ( i think it was) and pulled off a guys mask and its Danny Glover, thats fine by me. But.. I dunno.. You throw three of four Jossverse people in the movie and it lessens it in my eyes.

I hear ya. He was so adamant about not inserting Whedon alums gratuitously into Dollhouse. Then pretty much abandoned that idea.

Raimi did his little Bruce Campbell schtick with each of the Spidey flicks, that was OK.

All the major roles are cast already, is the thing. Unless they're actually gonna include Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne. Maybe Hawkeye.

No disrespect to any actor out there, but its BRUCE-friggin-CAMPBELL.. that man can do the most with the least amount of time. His appearances didnt interrupt the flow and they were great. But then again there is a difference between Raimi and Whedon too, so maybe its just experience on how to utilize his actors.
