Joss was interested in directing Star Wars VII but is busy making The Avengers 2

Joss was seriously interested in directing the Star Wars Episode VII movie, but it's set for a 2015 release, which is also The Avengers 2's year of release, so there would have been scheduling issues.

"I'm as angry as you should be," the 48-year-old Whedon told CNN about not being able to come aboard Star Wars. "When I heard that I was like, 'I wonder…no, I really can't do that. Oh, I already have a job.' I wouldn't clear The Avengers. I'm having so much fun with that sequel right now, just with the script, that I couldn't imagine not doing it."

What do you guys think?
First of all, I think Joss would be one of the few directors out there who could pull this off, but I always thought he would turn it down, because he wouldn't want to mess with such a legendary franchise. I'm a bit surprised that he was seriously considering it. But then again, he's a director, and if you're a director (and fan) and get such an oppurtunity, you take it.
 
This thread is proof that I should post things like this as soon as I see them. This has been out there for a couple days.

Now, as disappointed as I am that this couldn't happen...

1) There was never a formal offer on the table
2) Joss should stick to The Avengers for now, concentrate on keeping those movies strong
3) There's nothing saying that he can't direct a Star Wars movie in the future, hopefully one that he also writes and gets significant creative freedom on.
 
He didn't like the idea of someone else else making anything for Buffy, but would conciser messing around with another franchise.

The more I hear interviews, the less I like him.

I'm not a Star Wars fan at all so I'm glad he's staying with Avengers.

No, there wasn't, but I guess that doesn't change the fact that they asked him. After all, he's working for Disney anyway.

I'd say that's something totally different. If George Lucas hadn't wanted somebody else to continue, he wouldn't have sold Lucasfilm. Buffy is Joss' baby. If he doesn't want anybody to mess with it, that's totally fine, in my opinion.

Yeah I kinda get that, I just don't think it's cool that he doesn't mind doing projects other people have developed, but doesn't want anyone touching his stuff, there's kinda an arrogance to it I think.

According to the article I read about it, they didn't ask him. He only mentions being interested in the job and realizing that he couldn't take it. He is working for Disney right now, which is why I think he could make another Star Wars somewhere along the line.
 
I'm glad.

Joss Whedon managed to completely ruin not one but two franchises I like - Alien and The Runaways. Now I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, these days I'm mostly interested in SW video games but still, I don't want his clunky plots and quirky cut-out-of-cardboard characters anywhere near anything, even if they suit Star Wars. No, just no.

I don't want this to sound negative, but if you dislike his style so much, what brings you to this board? (I'm genuinely curious)

A little off topic, but I wonder if this is going to be the beginning of the third trilogy, which Lucas originally planned, the last three being Skywalker playing an Obiwan-like incorporeal mentor for a new generation of Jedi knights, or something else entirely.

It's a third trilogy, based on but deviating from Lucas's notes. No one has said all that much on the record about the story, and some of the few snippets that have come out are somewhat contradictory. I'll just wait until 2015 to find out - I'm not that big of a fan of Star Wars
 
I'll be honest, if Joss was directing, I'd probably be more enthusiastic about the project, but I'm very uneasy about the prospect of a new Star Wars film.

I have my reasons though. I'm usually uneasy when hearing about things like this now, and Star Wars (the original 3) are my favourite films of all time. Return of the Jedi was, I feel, the perfect place to end the series, so any continuation would feel a bit tacked on. I'm fine with the expanded universe, and find them interesting, I just feel that another series of films would be tacked on (oh, and in the announcement, Disney said that they are planning on releasing a new Star Wars film every two years. It's gonna end up like The Simpsons if that's the case).

Another reason is because I've had something like this before. When I was younger, I was really into a show called Thunderbirds. Back in 2004, they made a live action movie, which I was exited for, since I was a fan of the show and wanted to see how it played out with live actors instead of the puppets used in the show. The movie disappointed me greatly (even as a 10 year old, although I did enjoy the movie, it's only in recent years where I've grown to hate it), since it had pretty much nothing in common with the show I'd grown up with, with the creators using the property to make a horrible Spy Kids knock off which was more like a Disney Channel Original Movie than my beloved TV show. Hence why I'm very skeptical when Hollywood makes movies of stuff that should be left alone

I know how you feel, but I actually think its a good thing Joss isn't in the running for Episode VII.

Quite a few big-name directors have already passed on it. Career-wise, there's far much more to lose than you could ever gain. Right now, the Star Wars franchise is a poisoned chalice.
 
If he directed it I'd have to watch the last three films and I don't really want to. Watched the original three a few years back and wasn't impressed.

Well, last I checked it was Buffy board, not Whedon board and being a huge Buffy fan, I believe I fit. But seriously, Buffy is the only work of Whedon's I like ( OK, I also like Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Titan A.E. but you can hardly call it Whedon's work ) I think he should be writing low-browed, campy B-movies because that's what he does best and where his style works. Whenever he tries to do something with depth it ends up being lame, boring and most of the time pretentious because of his ham-handed messages, the guy knows no subtlety.

Yes, well, I don't know if they asked him. I'm gonna take that back. But I could imagine that they asked him.
Anyway, I'm glad he can't do it. It's too risky.

I didn't want to suggest you shouldn't be here.

When you were describing what you dislike about JW it sounded like you could be describing what some people dislike about Buffy (well just the words 'quirky' and 'characters' actually), which is why I was confused.

Anyone who's a fan of Buffy is one of the good guys in my book.
 
I'm glad he's not doing it. I'm still not in the new-Star-Wars-trilogy bandwagon and, though I'll have to go see the movie because it's Star Wars, I wouldn't want to hate Joss if I'm disappointed. If he keeps to The Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D, I know I won't be.

I don't know. First I was furious. But now, I'm kinda getting into this new Star Wars trilogy thing. I mean, I hate the prequels, so the new Star Wars trilogy (I mean 7-9) can't really do any more damage, in my opinion. The original trilogy is great and it always will be. At least if they stop adding pointless CGI...
