We've got some bad news for those of you excited by speculation that the plot of Marvel's The Avengers 2 or The Avengers 3 would centre around the Planet Hulk storyline: Joss Whedon has confirmed exclusively to IGN that this will not be the case.

When we sat down with the director to talk about his upcoming version of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, we couldn't resist asking if there was any truth to the rumours that future Avengers movies would make use of the Planet Hulk or World War Hulk storylines.

His reply, which can be watched in the above video, was, "Well I'm really not supposed to comment, but no, that's nonsense."

Speculation that the next Avengers movie would be Hulk-centric began last month when Latino Review claimed that The Avengers 2 would end with Mark Ruffalo's Hulk shipped off Earth by the MCU's (Marvel Cinematic Universe) version of the Illuminati, which would in turn lead to one of Marvel's Phase 3 movies being a live-action Planet Hulk film.

While it may be a bit disappointing to learn, it isn't hugely surprising to hear that Marvel isn't going to go ahead with the plot. We heard recently that an adaptation focusing on The Hulk rather than Banner would cause problems due to the lack of screentime afforded to Ruffalo, who has proved popular in the role.

So what does the future of Marvel movies have in store for us? Well, sadly, it looks like we're pretty much back to square one in terms of concrete info, though that hasn't stopped us speculating. Knowing Marvel and how tight-lipped the company tends to be, that'll probably have to do for now, though Whedon has been talking about the films he's looking to for inspiration.

"I've got the next story, and it's a corker," Whedon revealed to the latest issue of Time Out London. "I haven't even been thinking in terms of superhero movies. The films I've been thinking about are 'The Godfather Part II' and 'The Empire Strikes Back'. Those are the stars by which I chart my course."

In the meantime, his version of Much Ado About Nothing will release in the States on June 7 and in the UK on June 14.

I think thats a good thing, I agree that I'd want to see more of the actor playing the Hulk. Although depending on how Guardians of he Galaxy goes, their Outer Space world could be interesting.

Planet Hulk doesn't work for a live action movie at all. Hell, I don't even know if Planet Hulk would work as a Marvel cartoon.

For starters, like the article said, Bruce Banner has zero presence in the story. Like, absolutely none. Secondly, there isn't a single human supporting character in the story. They're all aliens (and weird looking aliens at that). There's no female lead. And plus, with The Hulk's history so far, there's no real reason to send him away. He hasn't done anything he can't come back from yet, and he was a big part of saving the world in the first movie. It also doesn't help that the characters who fire The Hulk off into space in the first movie, the Illuminati, basically only have Iron Man to do so in the movies. Professor Xavier, Reed Richards, Dr. Strange and Namor haven't even been introduced in the movies yet, and some of them don't even have their film rights owned by Disney or Marvel Studios. No way Planet Hulk works.

Judging by the end of the first movie, some variation of the Infinity Gauntlet storyline is in the works for the first sequel. They'll tone the power levels down from what they are in the comics, and obviously a few tweaks and adjustments will be needed, but it fits, especially if they can secure the rights to Galactus and the Silver Surfer.

Civil War is gonna be what they are building to right? It would make such a good movie!

Well if that very sketchy news from yesterday was true he'll be tied to Justice League!

Civil War is one of my favorite comic stories, and I think it'd make a great movie, but I don't know if they have the size to do it justice. Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four are HUGE parts of Civil War. In fact the story doesn't even really work without them. In the comics, it's literally every Marvel hero (outside of the X-Men, who sit it out) split down the middle. Having six Avengers? Not big enough.

You are KIDDING me. How many movies can they let the man ruin?! He'll make the Martian Manhunter from Jupiter.

Wow, wow, wow. Wow. Back up. You didn't like the Nolan Batman movies?

The Nolan Batmans are TERRIBLE. He is a pretentious ass who completely destroyed the character, not to mention several others. But I guess that's what happens when you let your brother write the script.

Throwing a bunch of money at a movie doesn't make it good.

At the risk of going off topic (aw, what the hell. It's a superhero movie thread. Close enough 🙂), I completely disagree. I thought Nolan nailed Batman. The feel of Gotham, how Batman fights and relates to people felt a lot like the comics. I get that he toned down how crazy smart Batman is from his comic counterpart, but that almost had to be done. After Grant Morrison moved Batman to the Justice League he got a little too powerful. It had to be done in the comics because suddenly Batman was fighting JLA level bad guys, but they couldn't have done that in the movies. It would have been a 15 minute movie.

I thought Batman Begins, in particular, was pretty much the perfect Batman movie (that ridiculous part with the guys in the "water control valve" notwithstanding).

Well, I'll just say that I disagree with the hatred of Nolan's Batman movies, and I'm going to avoid that conversation.

As for Planet Hulk not being the storyline, well... it looks like it's not going to happen, and I'm not really opposed to the idea, and there's the fact that I've never read it, so all I have to go off of is what other people have said about it. What I will say is that I'm not necessarily a fan of always using comic storylines to make the movies -- they can be used for inspiration, but trying to recreate them isn't exactly something I'm over-enthusiastic for.

Nolan completely lacked any respect for the character. He made Bruce Wayne know who killed his parents. 'Nuff said.

Well, to be fair, for the vast majority of Batman's comic history, Joe Chill was the one who killed Bruce's parents. He was caught, by the police, and went to prison for it. It wasn't until "Crisis on Infinite Earths" that they altered that history (which I do think is a better way to do it, and makes the mythos of having Batman in the first place more powerful). But in 2005 they changed it back with the "Infinite Crisis" storyline, where Chill was caught. It got changed in a middle point after "Flashpoint". As continuity stands now, the police never caught Joe Chill, but Bruce hunted him down, with a gun, shortly after he began training. So he did catch the guy.

Do you honestly think Nolan was paying homage to pre-80s comics? I think not. Plus retconning the comics to match the movies doesn't really sway me. His ego had to make changes, which is why the storylines are awful, and he RUINED characters like Ras Al Ghul. What an opportunity wasted.

Well, I don't think the movie played into the comics' decision to retcon things out at all. Infinite Crisis was built up for a full two years prior to the actual story, and that started before Batman Begins. I should point out that DC following Infinite Crisis was a complete mess for about two or three years. Just about every new (or old) concept they experimented with flopped, and was pretty much erased following Flashpoint. I'm just saying though, that for a large portion of Batman history, Joe Chill was caught (I completely agree though, that having him escape is a better story), so it isn't a new concept that Nolan introduced.

Ra's al Ghul? Yeah, he's different, but I don't see how else they could have done him, if they were going with the realism kick. I mean, Lazarus Pits and a 600 year old villain aren't really going to work. I thought his plan, and the reasons for his plan, really meshed with Ra's from the comics though. And ninjas. Ra's ALWAYS has ninjas.

Dude, you asked me, and I told you. I don't believe Nolan is true to the character. But worse than that, I think his movies are bad storytelling. And he's personally a jerk.

I'm never going to agree with you on this guy, so if you like the movies that's cool, but there's really no point to going back and forth on this.
