Joss Whedon has a message for Firefly fans

I don't hate FOX for cancelling Firefly. I hate that it got cancelled but to me that's not the same thing. It's all about business and although that sucks that's how it is. What I'll never forgive is how they treated it. Which show would survive a treatment like that? Although I guess some of it is rumours and not confirmed as such. So in the end it comes down to what you believe.

It was a relativly expensive show, aired on Friday nights, was preempted 3 times (twice in a row the second two times,) and aired heavily out of order, a liability even though the series was not overwhelmingly arc-based. Even though it was able to attract modest numbers and had decent audiecne rention, considering it's airday, Fox felt it was then too expensive to continue with.

Apparantly, the executives that initally green-lit Firefly had been replaced before it went to air, and there is some speculation that the replacements, in order to make their predecessors look bad (and therefore, validate their replacement,) sabotaged Firefly as much as they could, so that it would fail.

I get the arguments you quoted, but it's also pretty easy to see that FOX treated that show horribly, and gave it virtually no chance to work. Beyond horribly. I mean, how can you put a brand new show on a Friday night timeslot in it's first season, before it's even been given a chance to build a fan base, air the freaking episodes out of order and expect it to succeed. Just judging from how purely idiotic that premise is (assuming that they actually did, you know, want it to succeed), someone should have been fired. Like, super fired.

I think the theory of a few people trying to sink the show intentionally must have at least a measure of truth to it, because to be in that sort of position at one of the biggest television networks in the world, you have to be doing something right. I mean, seriously, you have to smart. So how could they possibly have botched that so badly? I mean, every wrong call they could have made, they made it. I mean, there was clearly something there. The DVD sales alone, not even mentioning the crazy dedicated following it has, prove that.

I hope that quote from Joss means something, I really, really do. I know he's incredibly passionate about Firefly and it must burn him that it ended so badly, and that for such an amazing concept for a show that it was never even given a chance. Now though, The Avengers is one of the biggest blockbuster smash hits of all time and Joss is red hot. Cabin in the Woods was a major success as well. If there was ever a time for him to get his passion projects off the ground, this is it. He might never have as much Hollywood cache as he does right now (or at least, until Avengers 2).

If there ever was a time to do more Buffy, Angel or Dollhouse the time would be now. Every fan got their own wishes. Don't get me wrong if he'll ever go back and do more of some old project I want it to be Firefly. I don't count Dr Horrible since it hasn't been cancelled or ended as such.
