So, my friend has this theory that you either have to be totally obsessed with Whedon and "give up your life" (her words) or you have to deny that you know who he is. Is this true? Personally, I think she is full of it but I was curious what everyone on the board thought. I love Joss Whedon and his shows, but I wouldn't say that I am obsessed with him or anything.

Just a comment I thought was interesting 😀. Oh, and mods, if this isn't where this is suppose to go, please move it and I am sorry.
 
Well, I'm in-between. I like most of what Whedon does, but I can see the flaws in his storytelling and style. I don't believe that the sun shines out of his ass, but he is, in general, a good storyteller and has some great ideas.

I do notice the dichotomy that your friend has mentioned, though. It does sort of seem that you either believe Whedon is God or have no idea who he is (or think he sucks).
 
Joss aint perfect...but so far, I have enjoyed every single piece of work he has done so he's alright in my book. I will continue to watch his stuff simply because its all been excellent, not because im in love with Joss himself.

Really? I actually laughed at the comment when I first heard her say it. I thought, and still think, that the comment is absurd. I didn't notice it before and still don't really see it.

Go look through some of the pre-air Dollhouse threads. And stuff on Dr. Horrible. :)
My ex-boss always denies knowledge of Whedon's existence. But then again. He usually denies knowledge of anything. He's kinda a weird fabrication con man like that. He's strange.

One of my friends is indifferent to him and his creations though. So . .. I think there is some extremism about it but not everyone on an extreme side of it.

Yeah, I'm in between like Blondie (in case you didn't gather that my first post wasn't serious!).

Buffy is one of my favorite shows, as are Angel and Firefly (not so much Dollhouse). But there are definitely things Whedon insists on doing in his shows that I don't necessarily agree with. For one thing, he insists on making romance a prominent part of all his shows, but his romances never end well. Don't get me wrong, it would be equally terrible if they all ended happily, but there has to be some element of surprise and having seen enough of his work now and having heard his views on happy couples in TV, I'm convinced he has absolutely nothing interesting in store for us in the romance department on Dollhouse. Some people seem into the Victor/Sierra thing, but I'm not wasting my time with that garbage. It's Joss Whedon. You can figure out how it ends before it technically begins. I also feel he sometimes places theme before entertainment value. Theme is important, and part of what makes his shows often rise above the silly things they could be, but first and foremost, his shows should be about entertaining. And occasionally, he falters on the balance. The best example I can think of is Buffy's potentials in season seven. Thematically, they make perfect sense because it allows the show to end in a way that promotes the female power element of the show. But it also stuck us with a bunch of useless characters taking up screentime and lowering the quality of a bunch of scenes, if not episodes, leading up to the end.

Im not even a bit obsessed with Joss. I think he's great for giving us Buffy n Angel, and i like him on commenteries, but Serenity and the comics are kinda bad. I've not even bothered to watch dollhouse or firefly ever. Joss's cool though.

Not trying to change your mind or anything, but in my opinion Firefly is a lot better than you'd think if you just saw Serenity.
I'm a fan of Mr Whedon's work, certainly, but I am in no way obsessed with it. I go sometimes as much as five whole hours without wondering what Buffy would do, and I haven't carried a wooden stake in weeks, and I most certainly did NOT even suggest that our granddaughter be named either Buffy or Faith. When I found out how much that black leather duster really cost (okay, when my WIFE found out) I cut the order back to just the single one. After all, leather's durable. No real need for ten spares hanging in my closet. But I'm not giving up my Viper for anybody, and my tattoo is located in a reallt discriminant place, so my wife is the only one besides me who even knows that I have it. Obsessed? Fixated? No way. I have a life.

Hmm. Interesting question. Well, I think he does have his fair share of die-hard fans, but I wouldn't say more so than other directors/writers/actors/etc. We're just a particularly active fandom. I mean, I know quite a few people who are really "obsessed" with David Lynch, or John Waters or Star Trek or whatever. Though, Whedon is certainly one of the most well-known and universally recognized TV writers/directors out there. He has a legacy. Most people recognize his name and can identify him with at least Buffy.

Most of the people I know in life who are into him are into him because I introduced them. Yet, almost everyone I mention him too initially knows who he is, and usually has something positive to say like "Oh yeah, the guy who did Firefly?" or "Doesn't he have a new show? The Dollhouse or something? I've been meaning to check it out." And I have met a few people through clubs, or even randomly, whom I learn later are fans of him. It's really pretty crazy how many guys are into Firefly. Here in Seattle, we even have our own Firefly themed coffee house.

Yet, it's important to also add that not all fans of his work identify as fans of him. I mean, some people are only into one of his shows. Me for instance, love all this work, but that's not always the case.

I'd agree though to an extent, people who are into him are either REALLY into his work, or are just neutral.

A good friend of mine absolutely refuses to admit his work is of any worth because "he's so famous and all." This argument doesn't make sense to me, but that's what she says. She says the "massive popularity of his stuff" turns her off to him. She claims to only like "serious" vampire dramas.(whatever that means) I was trying to explain to her that Angel is not really a "vampire drama" it's more like a drama with vampires, and that Firefly has nothing to do with vampires at all...but whatever.

That is so always the case! People always seem to have some sort of opinion on him. Always. Whenever I mention that I'm a fan of his to someone, they always assert that he's the best, or that he sucks, or who's Joss Whedon? It's rare when someone doesn't know who he is.
 
A lot of people i talk to dont know who he is, im slowly converting all of my friends to buffy/angel etc.

So far i've converted 3 friends to angel with one on the way. I've also showed friends dr horribles sing along blog which they all love so my plan is working.

but yeah, in most cases, they've never heard of Joss Whedon. I've only met one guy in real life who is a huge fan of his works like me.

I can see where she is coming from. I have had my issues with things that have become so popular. Things like Star Trek and Star Wars I have always had a mistrust about because they are so massively popular. I have given Star Wars a chance and I honestly don't like it, yes I am talking about the original three, I just found them so boring. So, I can see where the popularity of his stuff could turn her off.

For me, I wonder why so many people like it. Are they just following the crowd or did they actually like it? A lot the times people will just follow the crowd and for the most part I like to stay away from those people. So, I just distrust whether or not it is actually a good thing or not.

And sometimes I would just rather not get into certain fades. I did my best to stay out of the whole Twilight thing, but I did get into it eventually.

Its just that, if buffy got 50million viewers, it would't change the amazingness of it. As you say, you have twilight a chance and liked it.
Love everything Joss has done regarding Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse. Wouldn't say that I'm so obsessed to believe the guy can do no wrong though. Can't stand Toy Story, for a start. Alien Resurrection could have been better too.

I don't know if you absolutely have to be in the 'Love Joss' or 'Hate Joss' groups. There's definitely a middle ground to be had.
 
I guess I'm in between. I looooove Buffy and Angel and, on rewatching, keep thinking just how brilliant he is (especially with character development), but that's pretty much it. I do lke Dollhouse, but I haven't even finished season 1 yet, so it's nowhere near my Buffy love. I'm also aware of his other projets, but it's not like I've seen everything. I tried Firefly, but I totally didn't get into that. Part of that might've been that I didn't get a lot of the dialogues (either because it was too technical, or just because my English sucks), but the other part was the storyline that wasn't really too appealing to me. Dr. Horrible I've never even tried to watch.

give dr. horrible a shot, i can see why some people didnt get into firefly, but Dr. Horrible is really amazing.
From watching his interviews and listening to his episode commentaries, I enjoy hearing Joss' intelligent insights but groan at his bad jokes and overall odd sense of humor. I like Joss more as a writer and director, and have really liked most of his work. Alien Resurrection is one of the exceptions, but I cut him some slack for that one because he didn't have complete creative control over the final product (and I'm pretty sure that 20th Century Fox added significant input to the final script). So, I don't think "Whedon is God", but he seems like a pretty cool guy.
