What are your thoughts about Joss Whedon's view of America and China being the dominant countries if D. Trump becomes the President?

I honestly don't think that Trump would have as much to do with it as the fact that China and the U S seem to have the most advanced space programs today, thus would probably be the two nations most likely to be capable of building the multi-generation ships capable of making the trip to another star system.

On the other hand, having Hillary as President could very well provide the incentive for a mass migration, or more accurately, evacuation.

I think when you look at world politics, America and China already are huge players. Obviously the Western world consists of more than America and Asia consists of more than China, however I do not think it's far-fetched to assume that America and China will continue to advance to world power status. As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton already engineered a pivot towards Asia, and we know Donald Trump loves talking about China.

That said, I would guess that the US space program is severely underfunded right now based on articles I've seen recently (example: http://www.wired.com/2015/08/congress-dont-make-us-hitch-rides-russia-love-nasa/). This doesn't seem to get as much media attention as it probably should.

I think it's comical that Whedon complains about rich white men (like Trump) being out of touch and from a bygone era while he is one of the rich white men he is saying is part of the problem.

America and China will lead the world only if the financiers who are holding their debt permit it.

The US has $17 trillion in debt with commitments for $100 trillion in the future from civil service pensions of those still working, Medicare etc. China has built huge cities with zero population, meaning the grand idea of central planning doesn't seem to be working. Their fortunes are falling as demand drops for their products. I see recession hitting all countries with the exception, maybe, of Germany, but the European Union and the Euro will continue to be dragged down by underperforming member countries. I seriously doubt Trump will make any difference - the American system of checks and balances has devolved into a system of thromboses and embolisms. Much of the time, the government does not work and has to pass temporary bills to ensure funding for essential services while they remain deadlocked. The American standard of living peaked in 1967 and I doubt we will ever see the American dream again. Trump will make America a nation of prison guards. The wars in the Middle East will do exactly what the terrorists want - they will cause America to spend and spend until they don't own their country anymore.

The current level of American debt does not permit much of a space program at all and China is not going to do much better.

Not sure why Donald Trump specifically would be influential to Joss' view in regards to Serenity. Out of interest why do you think he would be something to factor into it at all?

Just out of curiosity - where do you think this migration would go to? 😉
