Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon announced today on the fan website Whedonesque that ''I'm no longer slated to make Wonder Woman.''

Whedon had been attached to the long-gestating Warner Bros. project as a writer-director since March 2005. The announcement comes a day after a Hollywood Reporter story about a separate Wonder Woman script written by two unknown scribes that was ''quietly'' being purchased by Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures. That story suggested that the studio was attempting to avoid any conflict with Whedon's now-defunct script. Reps for Whedon, Silver, and Warner Bros. were not immediately available at press time.
 
That sucks... I'm not a Wonder Woman fan but it would have been cool if Joss directed the movie 🙁.

You (hopefully) heard it here first: I'm no longer slated to make Wonder Woman. What? But how? My chest... so tight! Okay, stay calm and I'll explain as best I can. It's pretty complicated, so bear with me. I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated.

Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional. We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that's never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time. I don't think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk. I like to think it rolled around the rim a little bit, but others may have differing views.

The worst thing that can happen in this scenario is that the studio just keeps hammering out changes and the writer falls into a horrible limbo of development. These guys had the clarity and grace to skip that part. So I'm a free man.

Well, sorta. There is that "Goners" movie I can finally finish polishing, and plenty of other things in the hopper I've wanted to pursue. I'm as relieved as I am disappointed, and both of those things lead to drink, so that's a plus. Truly, you may be hearing some interesting things brewing in the coming months. But all potential jets therein will be visible.

But most importantly, I never have to answer THAT question again!!!! And you don't have to link to every rumor site! Finally and forever: I never had an actress picked out, or even a consistant front-runner. I didn't have time to waste on casting when I was so busy air-balling on the script. (No! Rim! There was rim!) That's the greatest relief of all. I can do interviews again!

That kind of sucks. I wish I was a multi-millionaire fan of Whedon so I could fund his projects. You'd think they'd trust the creator of the most influential female heroine, possibly ever.
 
My feeling is GOOD, now I don't have to go see it. I never was much of a Wonder Woman fan, but if Joss had made it, I would have coughed up the cash.

I hear this new one is going to take place in the 1940s. As I heard it Joss's version was going to emphasize the mythology, and her transition into the modern world. Which one would you go see?

This is the kind of big time movie exec thinking that gave us a classic like Catwoman. (Somebody needs to create a smilie that shows the dripping of sarcasm.)
 
i'm actually kinda relieved. i was never a fan of Wonder Woman, but this was a Joss project, so i was gonna see it anyway.
Now i won't have to sit through two hours watching an actress i don't like.
maybe now Joss can consentrate on something he really wants to do.
 
I've noticed a few sites where people were 'excited' by Joss making Wonder Woman are now 'Oh, i'm so glad he isn't doing this now'.

I fell off the Whedon wagon months ago, I wasn't particularly interested in anything just because it had 'his name' attached, so i'll watch Wonder Woman because I want to(Amazonian leggy blondes and brunettes in skimpy clothes...does it matter who writes that, it will be a fave for me!!!!).

I seriously believe the end of Buffy was the beginning of the end of a truly viable career for Joss, unless he goes back to TV, which I don't think his ego will let, not on a permanent basis.
 
Yeah, now he can work on other stuff, cuz that script was takeing forever.
 
oh dam... it would have been nice to see him do this. But its not something im going to cry over lol. ah well. maybe next time round eh?
 
I have to agree with Bored, this guy needs to go back to television. And I never once said I'd like to see Wonder Woman so I'm truly, truly happy that this happened. Wonder Woman = gag.

I didn't say there weren't, now did I? I just always wished Joss would work on something else rather than Wonder Woman, of all things. Like maybe an original idea of his.

Wow. OK. Doesn't really bother me in the grand scheme, cos...Wonder Woman...not a personal priority. It's just too bad he's spent all that creative time on this thing, jeez louise.

He's probably better off working on his own stuff anyway. I personally think he's got a viable future in films. They most likely wouldn't be big financially, if he's intent on staying true to his quirky style and passions. I dunno. It's weird - he's got sort of a smart indie sensibility, but mainstream geek/fanboy tastes in genre. What do the clueless suits do with that...

I wanna see that Goners thing...but a new show would be the best.

Actually he is working on one.

It's about a girl named Mia - people know that - who sort of sees in a mystical way the underbelly of the city and of human society, and goes through a kind of extraordinary hell, and we all have a lot of fun in the process.

It's very much the kind of fiction that I tell. That is to say, I love this character and I've been seeing a lot of horror movies that are torture-porn, where kids we don't care about are mutilated for hours, and I just cannot abide them.

This is much more a story about -- literally about human connection and whether or not it's possible.

But it's told on a very mystical scale and, in a way like everything I've tried to do including Buffy, it's an antidote to that very kind of film, the horror movie with the expendable human beings in it. Because I don't believe any human beings are.

Yeah I guess that's the good part. And I can't say I'm too surprised, since yeah, it was taking for-frakking-ever.. But. But but but... I wanted him to make Wonder Woman. I really wanted to see that movie, of his... 🙁
 
Am I the only one who thinks he should reopen Mutant Enemy...? I bet The CW would pick up a Faith series. 😉 Or something else. Maybe he and Tim Minear could create something. Once again...The CW would most likely at least pick up anything they wanted to do to pilot. They're in the crapper right now.
 
I'd like to see Whedon and Minear both try something outside the studio system - Indie films, or cable. The studios haven't been kind.

Maybe Joss secretly wishes he was a woman.
 
I think it's important to remember Warner Bros. is the studio that did Catwoman. That one's usually held up as an example of how not to do a superhero flick.

The television arm of the WB held the braintrust that canceled Angel following the season it was experiencing it's best ratings of the series.

The week before Joss was given the hook on Wonder Woman the WB snapped up a WW script from 2 wonderkinds named Matthew Jennison and Brent Strickland. Wanna know who they are? Near as I can discover they had something minor to do with a couple of B (really it's C) comedies called Beerfest, and Soul Plane.

Here's another thing. It wasn't just Joss who was let go by the WB this week. David Goyer, co-writer of Batman Begins has been developing the Project to create a movie of DC's other classic super hero The Flash for the last couple of years. Here's a little bit on that one.

I threw my heart into it and I genuinely think it would've been the basis of a ground-breaking film. But as of now, the studio is heading off in a completely different direction. I expect you'll hear of some new developments on that front shortly."

C'mon Warner. Take a risk. Take a gamble. Let the creatives take the reigns for a while... the accountant's typing finger has gotta be tired by now.
