Hey !

I would like to make two propositions for discussion about Joyce. It doesn't mean I agree with them, but it means that I want to see you're imagination rolling here
What do you think?

What if Buffy had tried to do a spell to make her mom better when she found out Joyce being sick? Giles mentioned a lot could go wrong.

Buffy does a spell and something goes wrong
What will go wrong?

What if Dawn hadn't torn the picture after the ress spell?
Joyce comes back as a zombie. Good or bad?

hmm interesting. If i recall with magic for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, much like when buffy comes back and it brings the hitchiker. I think if Buffy tried to do a spell to help her mom maybe her mom would have been alright but there could have been some big bad that happens. Plus if she did a spell to help her mom I don't think Giles would have approved of it, much like he didn't approve of Willow b/c of using magic to cure pain and using it for thing that happen naturally like death.

What if Dawn didn't rip the picture? I don't think we can be 100% sure that Joyce had come back as a zombie. When she did the spell and got the stuff from the guy he said that you could be dealing with zombies but never said she would definitely be that. so if she didn't rip it up and Joyce came back normal then all is good but again Giles would be pissed and probably willow as well. why willow b/c Dawn did something that she couldn't do....yet. If Joyce did come back as a zombie then that would have added some extreme drama b/c either buffy or dawn would have had to kill Joyce before she ate someones brains. And that could have been harder to watch then watching Buffy and Angel fight in becoming pt 1 and 2 and the whole later half of season 2.

If Buffy had tried to do a spell to make her mom better, and something went wrong, like Joyce got worse and/or died sooner...I think Buffy probably would have lost it. She already suffered some guilt, understandably, for not being right there when Joyce had the aneurysm. I can't imagine how guilty she would have felt had she been a huge contributing factor to her mom's death. Dawn would have probably never forgiven her, on top of that. I think that would have put a HUGE strain on their relationship. I can't even imagine what their relationship would become...Dawn would probably request on moving somewhere else, to her dad's or a foster home, I can see her being THAT angry about it.

As for Joyce coming back as a zombie...well, as the person above said, we never really know if Joyce was a zombie or not. That's the point. She COULD have come back completely normal, but in the end Dawn wasn't willing to take that risk. I think that Dawn knew if Joyce came back wrong, Buffy would have to kill her, and Dawn didn't want to put her through that after their little breakthrough at the end of "Forever."

How about this: Buffy somehow manages to find a spell that will remove the tumor from Joyce's brain. Unfortunately, due to her missing a small detail in the enchantment, enough healthy brain tissue is removed as well to cause Joyce to become little more than a vegetable.

Joyce comes back as a zombie. Good or bad?

I remember seeing a movie once where someone was frozen cryogenically and revived several years later, when a surgical procedure had been developed that could repair whatever had killed him in the first place. Everything went well, he was healthy, happy, and fully restored...physically. Too late, his friends and acquaintances began to notice changes in his personality, subtle at first, but increasing with time. He became cold, ruthless, cruel, totally uncaring of anyone or anything except his own wishes and pleasures.

They had completely revived his body, but his soul was no longer there.

Imagine Joyce with a personality like William's mother after he turned her. Human, but totally without love or emotions, any of the things that we all loved about Joyce.

that would have made for an interesting episode!
I gotta say I imagine it as white avenger says about the second question. It was a "natural" death, so one could argue it was time for Joyce's soul to leave this world and do something else on the other side, move on...so just because someone does a spell doesn't mean she'd be allowed to, or even want to, return to it. Which means it would be essentially the same deal as a vampire...something else could just take up residence in her body.

And, Spuffy is true love, zombies supposedly don't eat brains in the Buffyverse, at least that's what I remember from an "Angel" episode. 🙂

I think Joyce would have been horrified to learn Dawn bought her back from the dead. IMO.

What if Buffy/the gang had done a spell when Joyce became sick and what could have gone wrong? Well, for starters...anything and everything? As Spike says, there's always consequences with magic. They've never, as I can remember, tried something like that in the show, except when they tried to "cure" Angel, before they knew the antidote was a Slayer's blood. Well, the spell could have killed Joyce by accident, or caused her to go insane.

What if Dawn hadn't ripped the picture? I imagine Buffy would have had to kill her own mother's zombie - which would have been way too disturbing. Glad that didn't happen.

She dies a natural death and passes to the afterlife. She lives on through her deeds and her daughters and the love of all who knew her, even a soulless vampire genuinely mourning her. Let her rest. I for one am glad that we NEVER see the thing that Dawn raises from the grave. Let's remember her as we knew and adored her, let her die before her children as parents are supposed to do. In 70 years Buffy and Dawn will see her again. And rest in her arms, forever.
