(Oh yes Palabra you're karma hintage pushed me forward to post this thread. That and lack of things to do presently)

This is pretty much a thread for the relationship between Joyce and Giles. I think it's kinda of a marmite 'ship (You either love it or you hate it) but nevertheless we do see it culminated in the episode 'Band Candy', but I don't believe it's existent only in that episode, nor is it ended after the termination of the spell.

(Basically, I warn you, I'm going to ramble about these two here. Post to add thoughts, call me crazy, whatever takes your particular fancy at the time haha.)

Come on, from the moment they first meet in Angel (Wow, season one that was a long time ago) there is definitely a connection between the two of them. Giles has a look of wonder and surprise on his face when he first sees Joyce and has to be reminded by Buffy to actually speak. And he stays with her by her bedside though there is no reason to believe that she will be attacked again. And Joyce doesn't question his presence even though they have just met. Sparkage.

School Hard- when Spike has trapped everyone in the school and Buffy has just jumped down into the library from the ceiling (almost giving both Jenny and Giles a heart attack) she tells him 'My Mother's in that room. If I don't make it out of here alive, I know you'll make sure she does' and Giles with full dertermination and passion replies, 'Bloody right I will'. Could this be possible insight into caring for Joyce more than just as Buffy's Mother. Maybe he's not even aware of it himself; it's on a purely subconscious level. Or maybe not and he just covers it up well. He can be Repressed Feelings Man when he wishes.

Bad Eggs- Joyce comes to rely on Giles fairly quickly, turning to him for advice on Buffy as you would a close friend or co-parent (at least she certainly relies on him more than she does Hank) and you can't help wonder whether Joyce's question of 'do you have children Mr Giles?' is in fact a sneaky way of finding out whether he's single. However, since he's possessed, any attempts by Joyce to further this line of conversation is cut off shortly after by him putting the same creature possessing him onto her back.

Killed by Death- After this episode aired there was much discussion about the potential of Joyce/Giles relationship due to the conversation they have when she comforts him about Jenny. Joyce is genuinely caring towards Giles and concerned about his loss despite the fact they've seen very little of one another and there was definitely a comfort feeling between them, almost relationship familiarity. And Joyce's admittance of 'I babble when I nervous' suggests she's just generally nervous around Giles and you can't help but wonder why. 'if you need anything' is also an open ended and loaded offer.

Anne- By the time Buffy runs away from home, Giles feels close enough to Joyce to offer her comfort and she feels no restraint to respond politely.

"Joyce: I can hardly leave the house. I'm just afraid she'll call and she'll need my help.
Giles: Buffy is the most capable child I've ever known. I mean, she may be confused, unhappy, but I honestly believe she's in no danger.
Joyce: I just wish I could talk to her.The last thing we did was fight.
Giles: Joyce, you mustn't blame yourself for her leaving.
Joyce:I don't. I blame you. You've been this huge influence on her, guiding her. You had this whole relationship with her behind my back. I feel like you've taken her away from me."

Giles is clearly devasted by this as one can only be by someone they care about.

Dead Man's Party- Despite Joyce's hurtful words in Anne, Giles attempts to make nice again by complimenting the mask she had recently hung up in her room. Though when he says 'striking', she seems for a moment slightly alarmed that he may be talking about her, especially since Buffy is there. She then sighs in relief at the fact he wasn't.

The Band Candy finally brings about their reconcilliation and finally allows them to act on their mutual attraction to one another. After all the Band Candy didn't create the feelings it only released their adult inhibitions. Their discomfort afterwards seems less to do with shame and more with the fear of being caught, most likely by Buffy. And the two at the end of the episode, though they do panic a little both wear slight self-satisfied smiles.
And Joyce's looks to Giles when they meet again at the MOO rally in Gingerbread seem more coy than mortified while Giles glances at Buffy to see if she's watching to determine his behavior towards her Mother.

I'm gonna stop there for fear of never ending, but Joyce shippers on here (And I'm positive there's more than people claim) please add any other moments you noticed before or after Band Candy (I know there was plenty after Band Candy most notably Forever probably, but like I said, with me this list would go on forever) and anything else to do with this couple.

Oh and as I probably will not be on here tomorrow or the day after, Happy New Year!

I think Joyles were pretty cute together but I think if they ahd ended up with each other it would have been a little hokey.They were nice while they lasted🙂

I think they were kind of nice together for a short while but it never seemed quite "right" though.

And ROFL Palabra, I saw that one too, still getting the nightmares of him heh, but Amber is so cute in her segment of it.

I always favored Joyles over any other Giles 'ship. The Giles/Jenny thing didn't do much for me nor did Giles/Olivia. Definitely a cute pairing and I thought the 2 actors had great chemistry.

I noticed one in Amends. Buffy casually suggested that they invite Giles over for Christmas. Joyce got a weird look on her face and insisted that he wouldn't want to spend Christmas with a bunch of girls. When Buffy started to say that didn't make any sense, Joyce quickly changed the subject.

I really thought they would make a good couple. More because Giles was such a good father figure to Buffy and they did just kind of fit!! I thought it was so sad that after Joyce died Giles played that song from Band Candy...it was so sweet!

I can't believe I did this. I started this thread, checked the replies a while ago, got distracted by something and then forgot to come back onto to thread. Whoops. Haha

But yeah, anyway, on with the *actual* replying this time. It gave me quite a happy to see it's not only me and Palabra that go nuts-esque over this ship. Haha. And I totally agree with Flawless Faith about the blahness of the Giles/Olivia 'ship. Blah falls short in fact.

But I just finished watched Gingerbread (again, haha) yesterday and noticed the Joylesy goodness there. Amusing Joylesy goodness too.
Where they are at city hall and oblvious, oblivious Giles comes shoving through the crowd hoping to find Buffy and instead comes face to face with her Mother. It's his expression that makes me laugh. It clearly says 'oh crap'. And this is followed by embarrassment on both sides, including one glare from Joyce at a passing stranger when they accidentally knock her forward, just that little bit closer to Giles. Haha.
And when Joyce says 'it's been a while', and Giles starts to reply 'not since the...' but changes to 'for a while' as well, you can't help wondering what he was going to finish the first sentence with. Not since handcuffs? Not since the boinking of you twice? Not since [Insert kink here inappropriate for viewers under age of 18].
And Sheila Rosenberg says there's a rumor going round and poor bewildered Giles panicks and goes 'rumor? A-about us?' and the look Joyce throws him is classic.

But it's scenes like these that definitely make me believe in the 'ship. There was definitely feelings there (after all Band Candy didn't create feelings it just released their inhibitions) and the only reason they seem to not pursue the concept of a relationship is the fact of embarrassment over their teenage-like actions and Buffy. I mean in that meeting they are not repulsed by each other, quite the contrary (in fact you can't help but think the reason they don't make eye contact is because they are both involuntarily coming up with fantasies about the other in their head (perhaps involving stevedore comparisons yet again)....Giles certainly has that 'please don't guess what I'm thinking' look about him). In fact, Giles' look only seems to be to check if Buffy has noticed how their acting towards one another and Joyce's look at him seems more coy than anything else. Sneaky litttle bunnies.

 

[Vicariously]

I always wanted Giles and Joyce to get together...the care he had for her was MORE than obvious. Do you all think Buffy really would have objected to it? I mean her dad was a peice of work and Giles did play the father role even more after Joyce died. He even played the father to Dawn.

Yeah, you did see through the interation how much he did actually care for her, and I'm glad you said it was obvious Vicariously. Those sort of comments buy my friendship, haha.
And as for Buffy being bothered, I think it was Joyce and Giles that were worried she would be bothered by the entire affair whereas Buffy when she actually found out seemed to handle it fairly well. (After the initial 'You had SEX with Giles?! TWICE?!') Better then those two did actually. They went all avoidy while Buffy just freely talked about it (As for example in Earshot where she just casually yet pointedly says 'If you're not too busy having sex with my mother!' and she doesn't seem too ewwed out talking about it in Who Are You? In fact, she seems quite casual about the entire thing)
But I think perhaps Joyce and Giles worried it would effect Buffy's life too much. For example if they ever split up, fell out etc it would greatly effect Buffy and they didn't want to risk that. And Giles was Buffy's father figure and so like Joyce he would put the consideration of Buffy and her feelings first. Curse them for their considerate nature!
I think by season 5 there could have been something though (If Joss hadn't gone and killed her off the.......[insert curse here]) as you see in the Christmas scene in The Body, Buffy basically says she's fine with anything they do together as long as they don't do it as teenagers and at this Joyce just looks amused as does Giles and the two are clearly no longer embarrassed by the notion. And hey, that little knowing look exchanged between them over Buffy's head. I may read into things where I want to but that says to me that perhaps things had already happened but they just weren't telling her. I mean I saw mistletoe in that scene and you know the rules about that.....

And a rule should never be broken. Never.

I just rewatched that part of The Body and, I've gotta say, I agree. There was some Joylesey goodness going on.

I can't watch the rest, though. It's one of my favorite episodes, but it's just too sad!

Hey just browsing through some Buffy essays (they're usually quite witty and so entertain me more than your average paper hehe) and apparently there is a link between Spuffy shippers and Joyles shippers. As in if you like Joyles you're more likely to like Spuffy.
Apparently this is due to the fact that in Band Candy Joyce and Giles were meant to be show as a 'Spuffy potential' couple. As Giles' attitude is where Spikeesque, and Joyce is very similar to Buffy as a teenager (which you know makes sense being related and all haha).
It states that Joyles is pretty much the uber hotness but "that Ripper and Teen Joyce purposely resemble Spike and Buffy is just icing on the cake".

I don't know whether it was purposeful or not but it gave me pause for thought and led to many (naughty) comparisons between the two couples. And was also wondering if there's evidence here; Joyles shippers are you also likin' the Spuffy? *raises eyebrow inquisitively*

I buy it. It makes sense. Plus, it's borne out in me. I'm a Joyles fan and a Spuffy fan.
