Jumping ships?

Was anyone a dedicated Bangel but has now become a Spuffy or vice-versa? I've always been both but am wondering if anyone has completely changed ships- what made you change? Was there a particular moment in the show or was it due to personal experience?

I have always liked Buffy and Angel the most, but at the same time I enjoy Buffy and Spike as well. I see no problem with liking both.

The one relationship I've come to like a lot more over ensuing rewatches is Buffy and Riley.

Im a Bangel to my bones but lately I have been thinking that I would be ok if Angel and Faith were to start a little something something up.

I started watching the show when I was 14 and season 3 was airing--I was a total Bangel and remained that way until mid season 5, at which point I stopped watching the show for a bunch of reasons. I even caught the last scene from "Smashed" when it aired and was totally revolted when I saw Buffy/Spike together having had no context at all and was like.."yeah, no."

But when I picked up from where I left off in the middle of season 5 a few years later, I was completely sold re Spike's path to redemption and I wanted to believe that he could actually make progress without a soul, (it seemed like a much better story to me), and found myself rooting for Spuffy. I was unhappy with season 6 with regard to how the relationship played out but again was won over by Spike's ultimate redemptive move to fight for his soul in order to be a man. So in season 7 I was a total Spuffy. And now I am, through and through!

NB: I don't mean to imply that I liked Bangel simply bc I was just a kid or something. I totally appreciate Bangel and would never deny that it's an integral part of the show. So much fantastic storytelling comes from their arcs in the first 4 seasons in particular.

While I'll always root for Buffy and Angel and really, truly believe they belong with one another, if at the end of S7 Angel had ended up with Cordelia (another relationship I loved) and Buffy wound up with Spike, that would have been just fine with me as well.

However, all that being said, I'm always hoping (and envisioning...) the ultimate "ship". Fuffy. Purely for storytelling purposes of course. Yep, that's the only reason 😀

There isn't a single cell in my body that doesn't ship Bangel. I can't even ship other ship from other shows. Jumping ship is never going to happen. I couldn't even conceive of it.

I don't really get the shipping thing. I guess I never got caught up in the relationships enough (got caught up in other storylines) just enjoyed each storyline as it came.

Having said that, I remember being pretty cut up when one episode ended with Riley saying "but she doesn't love me" and Xander looks all crumbly faced.

Maybe I'm a Ruffy shipper!

Every time I watch that scene I end up thinking 'God, poor Xander!' And then I'm like 'No, wait, I'm not supposed to feel sorry for Xander here! I'm supposed to be feeling sorry for Riley!!'

I'm pretty neutral about both. As long as Riley is not in the picture, eh I'm happy! And well, Fuffy is the perfect ship for Buffy anyway.

I actually agree with James Marsters: to paraphrase, Spike/Buffy may make more sense, but Joss envisions Buffy with Angel.

I started watching since BS1, and really got into it by BS3. I was pretty strongly Bangel. I still am, but my reasons have changed. At this point, I'd probably prefer Spuffy, but think Buffy would prefer Bangel.

I seem to switch between the two depending on what season I'm watching. I just love the way Buffy and Angel look at each other and I love how they would do anything for each other. The heart break of their final break up is massive. Gets me every time. But then again, so does the moment when they're dancing together and Buffy's cross burns his chest. Their romance is amazing and it's the kind of love anyone would wish to have; I know I do.
Spuffy to me is less about romance and perfection and more about growth and understanding; it's a more mature relationship. To me it represents reality as opposed to the dream. I love the episode Touched because it shows what their relationship has become; the speech that Spike gives Buffy is one of my favourite of the series. Buffy then asking Spike to stay the night with her is perfect. They're able to be in each others company and just rest.
Both the relationships that Buffy shares with them are special and I love them.

I find Spuffy more interesting simply because I find Spike to be a more watchable character with percetion of what is going on around him, artistry from his life before being sired that never leaves him and his objectivity about his situation. Spuffy interactions are interesting whereas Bangel interactions are more melodramatic.

Out of curiosity, how is Spike's relationship with Buffy, which until late in the game in S7 consists largely of them having repeated hate-sex, Buffy desperately hiding the "relationship" from her friends and loved ones, and Spike trying multiple times to convince her that she's "broken" and "dirty" uh...intelligent, practical or perceptive? Perfectly fine if you find the Buffy/Spike relationship more interesting, but I have never understood how a relationship with a guy, which started with him sniffing her clothes and building sex-robots of her is somehow "intelligent, practical or perceptive".

Buffy/Angel does have its flaws (or well, so [MENTION=6758]white avenger[/MENTION] tells me), and I do enjoy the Spuffy relationship, but let's be real here. It's hardly an example of practicality or perceptiveness.

I don't see it, myself. Ashley isn't fit to clean Angel's boots, and Buffy Summers would dropkick Scarlett O'Hara just to shut her up.

Only to the point that, frankly, my dear... well, you know the rest of the quote.

I like Spike with Buffy best because I SAW Spike and Buffy first, which will always make Buffy Spike's girl for me. That's the exact same reason that quite a few Bangels see her as Angel's girl, if they'll just admit it. Frankly, both relationships suck (vampires, you know) but Buffy and Angel just has too much crying and, "Oh, if we only could, but we can't..." and "Maybe someday but I just don't see how..." and let's not forget "It's too dangerous for both of us, so I'll run away to the big city, but I'll keep tempting fate by coming back..." in it for my taste. At least Spike and Buffy get down to business, whether fighting or in bed. Passion, I can accept, even the less than healthy kind just as long as both parties KNOW that that's what it is and can get a little mutual, albeit momentary, pleasure from it. By Season 6, Buffy is an adult, not some dreamy teenager with delusions of Harlequin Romance love affairs, and even as troubled as she is, she doesn't have any delusions about what she was getting into. "This isn't real, but I just want to feel..."

What Spike and Buffy had in Season 6, bad as it was, at least provided Buffy with an outlet for her anger and frustration, and it also has to be remembered that, without that relationship, violent and destructive as it was, there would have been no incentive for Spike earning his soul and becoming the Champion that he was fated to be. So, even if it was bad, the ultimate results, realized in Season 7, was good.

So, yeah, at second thought, maybe I do see Spike as Rhett Butler to Buffy's Scarlett O'Hara, but only because Angel makes such a GREAT Ashley Wilkes. The way that I recall that story, Scarlett finally realized that she and Ashley just weren't meant to be, and when she finally admitted that she loved Rhett, he said, "No, you don't, thanks for saying it, but frankly, Buffy, I just don't give a damn."

(And before anyone decides to jump all over me, it should be noted that I'm currently pumped full of pain medication due to a dislodged kidney stone, so frankly...)

And it's all Miss K's fault for bringing up "Gone With The Wind."
