And at the moment I'm just discovering who I am. I don't care what other people think of me anymore so i'm just trying to be me.
Will, you've started down the road to true wisdom with this phrase. As I said to another BBer just today somewhere else, some people take a lifetime to learn this lesson...some never do. Others take it as the first step to a better way of dealing with themselves and with others. When you free yourself from the expectations of others, you are able to grow in a way that is true to yourself...the only way that leads to contentment.
As I'm a bit aged compared to most of you, my phase is a bit different. I've gone thru the highschool stuff, the newlywed stuff, the young-couple-spend-the-whole-paycheck phase, parenthood (still happening, they'll always be my kids...) and now the realization that retirement (!) is closer than I really want it to be, and my hair is
never coming back! I'm a lot more aware of my shortcomings and blind spots, as well as my strengths and good points. I've learned through my recent apprenticeship as an electrician (yup, I started at the age of 38 ) that there is no shame in saying "I don't know" or "I don't understand"...it is uncomfortable to say these words, but it is the best way to go...any idiot that makes fun of you for saying these things is just that...an idiot, and not worth the time it would take to insult him/her. Most people of goodwill will help you out, even teach you, if you ask, and are open to their help...at the same time, I'm getting a bit more curmudgeonly, and I don't suffer fools lightly...or zealots. There is a certain decorum for every situation, and I get annoyed when people flaunt the rules, whether they're formal or ad hoc. Zealots who will brook no opposition and resort to demonization of anyone with the nerve to stand up to them are particularly hard for me to endure...especially when the opposition has a point, and facts to back it up!
SG: Killer thread, my friend...you're making my brain do it's exercises, and the introspection is good for the soul...thanks.
Lastly, there is a joke in here about an electrician and phases...but I won't bore anyone with a techie joke...
