Stirring up the Adopt-A-Bangel/Save Our Spuffies topic again has gotten me to wondering, and I would like some input from the membership. You don't have to be either Bangel or Spuffy affiliated to give your opinion, and in fact non-shippers might actually have a better assessment of it. Here's the question: which ship, if either, seems to be the most tolerant of the other group?

I'm probably in the minority, but I've never had any real problem with Buffy and Angel being together, at least in the first 3 seasons, and I have never doubted that they do, indeed, still love one another. I simply believe that Buffy deeply loves both men, equally but certainly differently, and could quite happily spend her life with either one. I prefer Spuffy mostly because of the closeness that they had developed by the end of Season 7. Granted, I was a Spuffy shipper prior to that, but I think that the main reason for that was that Spike was the first one who I saw Buffy with, and they just seemed somehow RIGHT together. When I finally saw the earlier seasons, Angel just took getting used to.
 
Well like I said in the Save Our Spuffies thread... I can see why people ship Bangel and if I didn't hate Angel quite so much and love Spike quite so much, I might say I liked them both. I don't mind the Bangels at all. I get the appeal of the ship... it's the purest love ever... just raw love. So I say I'm pretty tolerant of the Bangels.
 
Bangel in s1 and s2 I can tolerate. S3 Bangel...no way. I love both Buffy and Angel, just not together. So, I was shipless through the end of s3, s4, and into s5. But, Spuffy saved me 😀 However, I understand the appeal of Bangel and do not doubt that Buffy will always love Angel because he was her first love. So, I definitely can tolerate Bangel fans since some have been pretty tolerant of me and my Spuffy love too 😉

As an undeclared shipper, I'd have to say that on BB there is a lot of tolerance going around. Yes there are plenty of lively debates, and lots of fun, but no true mean-spiritedness that I can see. Everybody has their opinions of course. But I've heard that the debate is a lot fiercer in other areas of the fandom. I wouldn't know since this is the only Buffy-related forum I'm a part of.

I definitely lean one way, but I'm reserving final judgement until this current re-watch is over.

Other than that, I'm with buffyprops...Royce FTW!!
 
I think it really depends on the forums and the individual groups. I find that any fan can be tolerant of others who don't necessarily share their views.

However in terms of accepting or believing what Buffy feels, I've come across more Spuffy fans who are happy to believe that Buffy loved Angel but very few if any Bangels who feel that Buffy ever truly loved Spike in the way that he wanted.

Many say this is due to the fact that genuinely don't see romantic love when they see Buffy and Spike together especially in season 7. I suppose it could be argued that with Bangel, it’s more unequivocal, in terms of the whole ‘holding hands’ thing. Bangels need it to be reaffirmed in the way that Spuffies don’t. I can understand this. Buffy only told Spike she loved him right before he was going to die, right after she said she doesn’t really see a realistic future with him, but part of the allure of Spuffy for me is the defiance of convention. I suppose it’s the hope of what could be as well. Spike and Buffy have never had a loving romantic relationship the way Buffy and Angel did, so it’s like “Bangel had their time, move over…”

Sp really I can understand both points of view reasoning behind it but as far as believing in the validity of the other ships, Spuffies are more accommodating of the other ship.

Honestly I think Bangels get more offended than Spuffy from my experiences...i'm not a shipper by the way so i'm just an outside observer looking in
 
My opinion is obviously biased because I wholeheartedly take part in the banter between the two sides on this board. Actually, of all the Buffy sites on the net, this is the only place I know of where Bangels and Spuffies can actually co-exist without it turning horribly nasty. The fact that we actually have a lot of fun here with the rivalry, is honestly a point of pride for me.

As much as we rib each other I don't believe there is any person, part of either side, that actually wants to disrespect or hurt the other side. We don't agree...on anything really (lol), but we still manage to keep our sense of humour. Gotta give us all props for that.

We both agree that our ship is best. We both agree that the other ship is wrong. That's two things we agree on. It isn't much, but it's a beginning.

Yeah I think both sides are pretty user friendly, I think the majority of the stuff done on this boards is all in good fun.

But to be perfectly honest, and I don't think there is much bias here, but I actually found Spuffy fans to be not as tolerant and it was actually Spuffy fans that made me not like Spuffy. I didn't care when I watched the show, I didn't give 'Shipping a thought, but it wasn't till things got more 'shippery around here that I actually decided which I liked, and my reasonings weren't entirely built from the show.
 
As a Spuffy 'shipper turned Bangel 'shipper turned Spuffy 'shipper... They seem pretty equal to me. There are less tolerant and more tolerant people in both; I doubt that any one group somehow promotes intolerance more than the other. 😛

Personally, I really really dislike Bangel. But as you all know, I positively adore the Bangel 'shippers here. 🙂

Exactly. I positively loathe Spuffy as a ship but some of my nearest and dearest on this board are badge wearing, flag-flying Spuffies.

I think Spuffies are more tolerant of the Bangels then vice versa, but it's hard to say.

See, this is where we differ. I do take issue with Buffy and Angel together - I did then and especially now. I prefer Spuffy for many reasons, but the first and formost being that I honestly think that Buffy was happiest with Spike. Not to say Buffy doesn't love Angel - clearly she does - but I think we can agree that sometimes who you love is not the right person for you. Secondly being because Spike is my favorite character, so I keep his interests in mind. Buffy is his true love, so of course I want them together.

Thirdly? Spuffy is simply more interesting than Bangel, on so many levels.

Outside of B-B, I've found Spuffies are generally more tolerant. Granted, I'm a little biased, but some of the Bangels I've met are straight up condescending and rude sometimes. A few of the more aggressive ones I won't elaborate on because I think they may just be people on the fringe and not reflective of Bangels as a whole, but a lot of the other ones I've met are still quite snarky. Then again, a lot of them are very nice and bring great arguments and debate to the table.

As a shipper myself, I really try not to make negative comments or bring down other people's ships. I hate it when people do that to my ship, so figures I should at least set an example.

In regards to the B/A relationship, I actually ship them a little in Seasons 1-3. (I'm a Spuffy through and through though lol, I promise!) I ship them for what they were then, but I ship Spuffy for how they grew and for what they became. I think it's beautiful either way, and though I'm obviously rooting for a happy Spuffy ending, I still think there's room for some appreciation of both ships.

I've only been on B-B for a little while, and I think there's a LOT more tolerance on here. Maybe it's the format of it (I've only really been active about Buffy on sites like tumblr, where the format isn't really created for interaction and it's difficult to really talk to other people) that allows more free discussion, but the community on here is really nice. 🙂

Okay, I'm gonna go with Spuffyers are way more tolerant than Bangelers. Here's why:
We all saw the beginning which was Angel with Buffy. The Spike/Buffy relationship came about long after Angel went to LA for his own gig.

The thing about Bangel? FIRST LOVE. No matter how it ends, that first love is always so very, very special. It can never be duplicated. Other loves can be more passionate (Spuffy!) or fun (Willow/Oz) or sweet (Gunn/Fred)... but there can only be ONE first love. And therefore, as a TBS (true blue Spuffyer!) I concur that Bangel was a VERY SPECIAL relationship, and being first true love for both, will always continue to be so.

But .... GOOOOOO Spuffy!!! (Spuffy til the end of time!!!)
 
Im not a bangel or a spuffy. Im a fangel. They only ship battles Ive witnessed have been here. Each side seems to accept the other pretty tolerant of the other. I do have to say that even though they appear to be fewer in number, spuffy fans appear to be more devout.

I find Bangels more tolerant of Spike as a character than Spuffies are of Angel as a character. Almost everybody likes Spike. Bangels are pretty defensive of Angel.

True, but if it makes you feel better, I personally love Angel as a character, particularly on his own show. 🙂
