I'll admit I don't like Angel as much as Buffy, but it's still really good. I think the show really improved around episode 9. All of the episodes past that point seem better, well except "Expecting." I enjoyed seeing the old Buffy characters grow on their own out of Sunnydale. I think Wolfram and Hart are proving to be interesting villains. The Senior Partners have me really intrigued, are they human or demons? The ending with Darla was also a great cliffhanger. Overall, I think the show could benefit from less of a villain of the week approach and more of a narrative, which is why I like the later episodes better.

Glad to hear you are enjoying Angel! I personally think that season 1 is probably one of the weakest, so don't lose faith in the show. The show does change quite a bit in season 2, and I think it starts to work better. Rather than a villain of the week approach it does become more focused on over-arching plots.
I don't want to give anything away, but I can say that you will definitely begin to find out more about W&H and the Senior Partners next season.
I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts about season 2 and BtVS season 5. It should be interesting as I'm also re-watching Angel s2.

Faith's episodes were some of the best of the season. I liked how she turned herself in at the end, it showed she was committed to change unlike a certain lawyer.

I love Angel. The entire series (with a brief exception at the tail end of S4) is just awesome. I think that on the whole, Buffy is better, but the best of Angel is just as good as the best of Buffy.
Angel himself is one of my favorite leading characters ever, and Cordy morphs into one of the best characters on Buffy or Angel. I'm a huge fan of Doyle and Wes as well too, so I loved it right from the start. I actually think that post-S3 of Buffy, Angel has a stronger overall cast. You know how in a lot of shows once they start adding characters in later seasons the quality goes down? The exact opposite happens on Angel. All of the characters are first-rate. Wolfram & Hart are probably the best overall villains in the entire Buffyverse as well. Plus, Lindsey is freaking awesome.
I love the series opener, "City of". I thought that was a perfect way to start it. They do a great job of making L.A. really feel like another character. And I just really like that Angel runs a detective agency. I think that's cool. I can't remember which episode it is, but in one of the early ones Spike comes to town (he's chasing the ring) and he has that opening monologue pretending to be Angel. That made me laugh so hard I think I almost fell over. "Hero" is one of my all time favorite episodes as well. Doyle's might be the best death in the series (maybe). The fact that that episode comes right after "I will remember you" though was just a double-whammy of sadness.
All the Buffy crossovers were awesome too. Angel vs. Faith is one of my favorite moments of the entire series, and how he saves her was pretty incredible. I love the arguement he and Buffy have later in that episode too, where he makes it clear that he just can't move on from her, and after "I will remember you", where she doesn't remember what happened, it was just so sad.
I was a big fan of S1, but the show keeps on getting better, and it peaks in S5. Trust me, you'll love S2 and S3.

As Eunsoma pointed out, the show become more of an arc-centered story from S2 and on, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it even more now! 😀 The Faith episodes were definitely the best in S1 along with 'Blind Date' which focused on Lindsey and got me interested in his character.

I forgot to mention in my first post, I just love the feel of Angel, especially at the beginning. Angel, Cordy and Doyle (and Wes when he joins) are these group of friends and colleagues whose lives haven't quite turned out like they were hoping. Things aren't great and they all (even Angel) feel a little overwhelmed by the big, bad city. They're all coming from personal demons or tragedies.
But they come together. It's them against the world most of the time, but they deal, and they deal together. I think that's kind of a cool metaphor for a lot of young 20-something's who are out on their own for the first time. I think S1 really nails that.

I view S1 of Angel to be kinda similar to S1 of Buffy in a certain light, considering that there are many episodes that are kinda stand-alone-ish. Granted that Wolfram and Hart are always being brought up in Angel, but still. So, it does indeed get better.

Probably the best parts of that episode for me were when Doyle is giving background on Angel's story (For those who had never seen either show before 😛), and when Angel goes and rescues Cordy. Plus Doyle driving the car straight into the gate is always good for a laugh.

I think S1 at times had these "dark, noir-esque" overtones about it that sometimes felt forced or overdone. However the show never got too heavy handed with shadowy silhouetted shots of Angel under a street light and things of that nature. I felt that with this being a step in a different direction for Angel, they really wanted to make this season stand alone from Buffy with the obvious exception of the I will remember you crossover.
