Not sure if any of you have watched this (pretty famous) show, but it's in the same genre as Buffy and was released not too long after.

First thoughts:
  • damn these brothers are fine
  • Dean is my personal fav
  • did I mention I like Dean?

Ah another Dean girl 😁 welcome to the fandom!

I was annoyed by SPN at first because Buffy had just finished and I would have rathered more of that. But it took on its own life and I love it probably as much as Buffy now. I havent rewatched SPN as much as Buffy only because there is so much more to get through!

Dean’s my favorite brother too, it’s funny because it was really supposed to be Sam’s show but Jensen Ackles is such a strong actor that he ended up getting the more emotional scenes.

Supernatural honestly has everything. Some show runners were better than others but it is 15 years of 22 episode per season television. They were bold enough to include Christian mythology, they have character studies, comedy episodes, breaking the fourth wall episodes, and completely unique episodes. Hopefully you enjoy.

So, what army is Major Spoiler in?

also the show is about the supernatural, so the religious concerns are only secondary concerns, so they are not major concerns and are treated as unimportant issues.
Did you think their portrayal of characters in Dark Angel and/ or Cry Wolf showed them to be good actors when they had a well written script to adhere to.

I'm now into season 13 of my first watch. Of the two brothers, yes, I agree Dean is better (not my type though; Felicia Day's recurring character who appears in S6 is... 😀). I think Jenson Ackles has better range than Mr Grumpy Face does. Especially in the lighter episodes, like "Yellow Fever" or "Dog Dean Afternoon".

You can also play a game of "Spot the Buffy alumni" with the series.

I love that episode with Amy Acker!

Oh, there is a slight possibility you may like this then... 😀

New Update:

Finished episode 2 and 3.

Thoughts:

  • I LOVE the brotherly bond these two have
  • I think someone is going to catch onto the credit card scheme soon
  • How do they have washboard abs when all they do is eat donuts? I mean in the first episode Dean bought chips and soda for breakfast...(sounds yummy)
  • Like Buffy, the first season has many filler episode, I'm just gonna have to power thru since this tends to annoy me
  • Dean is still my personal fav, but as a younger sibling Sam holds a special place in my heart

I showed the first episode to my friend and we wouldn't stop laughing at their antics. Only Dean would get arrested in the first ep

Dean's diet overall is terrible! 😀 But they do have a high-energy, high stress job that will burn off those calories like nobody's business.

Oh man, you are gona struggle with 15 seasons of this then haha. It does have a lot of filler episodes. I personally miss filler episodes in tv, but you are right in that they slow down a binge format.

Some of the fillers are some of the best stand alone tv. Some real gems in the series that you only have to have a vague idea of what the show is about to be able to follow along and enjoy. This is very typical for tv of the time - far more casual viewers that flicked over during an ad break. SPN does sort of evolve as viewing habits do. It leans into the fans after s8.

TV is more tribal now, you're either a hard core far, or not. SPN is a great show for those who just casually like the genre. Not too deep, only heavy if you're really invested, and a lot of jokes and fun moments.

You failed to mention about Dean's poor taste in music that is often played in the car. Did I really mean poor? tee hee

I think 22 episode seasons need filler episodes in order to work. The seasons I found the weakest are usually those where there aren't as many filler episodes, because they end up trying to stretch an arc over too many episodes, and that generally weakens it a lot.

I wonder how many series wound up being successful because of this format. Trying to dive into one of the current typically 6-8 episode seasons in the middle will result in you tuning out, totally lost, no matter what season. Something like Supernatural, Buffy and especially those lacking any arcs, such as TNG, and you can easily watch a standalone episode and get drawn in and want to watch more.

Yes! Season 5, 4, and 6 of Buffy do filler right and are a prime example of this

Yeah, and as time went on you can see the show change from one major arc to mini arcs within it - much like TVD and The 100 were doing. SPN spanned from Buffy era, all the way up to streaming tv. It would be interesting to watch through the lense of the time it is from, rather than just the story it tells. Considering a lot of the megafans of the time had started watching as it aired, they did well to keep episodes like Mint Condition, in the mix to keep us happy, as new fans were not as keen on the slow burn.

Yeah, exactly that. There were just a lot more casual fans, who didn't care much if they missed a bit, but were content enough to consume whatever was on at the time they sat down to watch tv. Most also couldn't go online and find an episode, so were reliant on reruns to see what we had missed. There was overall, just less to choose from. More people across the world were united by the same tv. There are a lot of complaints about the lack of diversity in some of the biggest shows of the 90's, but they were all pretty much coming from the same place, which frankly wasnt as diverse in profession as it is now. It wasnt about excluding certain groups, they just were not prominant in that working space yet.

Generational tv, in the sense that most tv viewers of that generation have heard of or seen a particular show, is largely lost now, there are a few stand outs, but mostly we are more fragmented with the media that is consumed. Even more so with political divides. Certain types will stay away from, or seek out, networks with the same ideals. I notice locally that the government is grappling to find ways to get public service announcements out because we're not all locked into the few channels or radio stations, everyone has fragmented off into their own streaming groups. It will be fun to watch how mass media starts to be reined back in, or phased out.

The rate of consumption is another point that changes the pace of the story telling. SPN was originally made for week to week. There are few shows that do that now and a lot of people will just wait for the lot to be released before binging. How that affects the viewership numbers hasnt been properly quantified, with shows being cancelled due to low viewership, when really people have just changed the way they view.

Here emergency alerts are sent by text message. No matter what people are watching, you can almost certainly guarantee they have a mobile.

Something like Yellow Fever, you could tune in, watch having never seen any other episode before and not know a thing about the series, and still have a good chance of enjoying it. I honestly can't think of many current series where you could do that in the middle of any season, even the first. (The current MCU is even worse; there are entire series and films that make almost no sense unless you've done the required homework of all the other series connected to one first.)

Series can take time to build up to be successful, and nowadays there is either megasuccess or failure. Buffy, SPN, The X-Files, Star Trek, none of those would last more than a season, two if lucky, now.

I meant more like the sprinkler days rather than dire emergencies. I see them pushing compulsory apps once the over 70's die off enough to rely on smartphones completely, for all sorts of messaging.
One might realise how much the quality of music can help a show, imagine if Spike had forced fed Giles with Acca - Dacca Live at Donnington Raceway whenever he was in the car or to have Buffy's mind contaminated with Black Sabbath whenever she 'served' him cups of blood?
The third element of a good show is always the music.

I like Dean's 'trashy' music
This thread is making me realize how much of an old person I sound like. I miss 22 episode TV. I understand actors and the crew were getting burnt out but 8 episodes every 2ish years is crap. We grew up with characters from the older shows and would spend an hour with them every week for years. Today’s media just doesn’t have me as invested it’s not uncommon to not remember the plot of the previous season before a new one gets released. We don’t get to know characters or give anything time to breathe because everything needs to be condescend into 8 high stakes hours. Rant Over and like I said I know I’m old.

Dean girl all the way!!; Sammy is cute (and super tall!), but Dean has everything I'd want in a guy. The attitude, the humour....his love of sex, cheeseburgers and pie. He'd be a fun guy to party with. But I couldn't really imagine having a relationship with him, because Cas might pop up at any damn moment. "Dean, why are you in that position? Are you injured?" 😄

On the other hand, I don't want to end up like Jessica or Mary so perhaps I SHOULDN'T dream about being with a hunter.
