I just asked myself, how it would be if you would not know the serie Buffy or Angel and then you read the biographies of the separate characters. Do you think you would find them as good or as bad as you find them when you have watched the serie from the beginning. This is the first question.
The second is that when you start to watch Buffy in the 5th season for example (like many did) and not from the beginning (like I did). What were then? I think I would have a completely different attidute to Spike, for example. (Actually, I don't really like him).
But it's quite difficult to put yourself into such a situation.

(I really hope somebody understands my questions. 😀 )

Well My friend started watching in season 5 and I started watching season 1 and in a lot of cases are opinions are pretty much the same, but sometimes we differ. She doesnt like Xander, doesnt really think he is that funny, but when she has watched some of the previous eps in past seasons she has loved him. Anotherexample would be that I thought Willow and Oz made a great couple and didnt like Tara and Willow in comparison but my friend is the opposite because she is used to Tara and not Oz if you get what I mean.

I have friend, she started watching Buffy in S5 and she became spuffy, she said Spike was sweet and tender and yada yada,...then she watched the fisrts seasons and she is a bangel now

Yes I've thought about this too! I didn't have this problem with Buffy or Angel, but I also watched Charmed on an occasion. I started watching that at the end of season 4. I fell in love with the character Cole and all of my friends were shocked because when he first appeared on the show he was a demon trying to kill the witches. I've always wondered if i would have still liked him if I had originally seen him as this horrible bad guy.

I started watching BtVS during S6 while I was watching S2 in the reruns. I fell in love with B/A and I really hated Spike because I saw so much of his abusive nature in S6. I watched S5 and S7 and my attitude towards him changed. I also loved Spuffy in S5, but S6 really ruined it for me.

I sound just like your friend. Magui! I started watching in S5 and Spuffy seemed really good, but then I watched S1-3, and now I'm Bangel! I don't hate Spuffy, I just like Bangel better.

what a coincidence!

I started in S5, the first boyfriend I saw her with was Riley, I realy liked him, and I still do. after I saw 1-3 I became a Bangel shipper. But i'm willow/Tara over Willow / Oz anyday. I just always thought Oz, was boring.

Nope, I'd seen it all up through 6 before I really had a preference...and I'm still a Spuffy. 🙂 Makes no difference to me. I just relate to them better...to HIM better. In all honesty I love Angel and I love Buffy but I just never really believed their relationship. Just my oppinion and no offence to any other ships.

(Spangel rules all! Lmfao...😛)

I started watching from s1 til the end of s2 then had a break(no eps were shown here) I started watching Angel and thx to dling I have seen most Buffy eps and almost everything on Angel...
I rmember that I first saw ep from s6 with Buffy and Spike and i didn't like it from the beginning..

I've watched Buffy since the begginging but I'm probberly the type of person who if I didn't watch it I would of found it incrediably annoying! lol

If I read the biographies without having known the show, I would've been confused and wouldn't get one bit of it. I'd probably think it was weird.

If I started in on s5, I would've liked Spike, Anya and Xander 'cause they are funny and Tara/Willow cause they are lesbian.

These are interesting commentaries. It's good to know somebody who has started watching Buffy from another time as oneself.

Anyway, concerning Spike. I do not like him. Maybe it is his whole behaviour and attidute. Because of that he was good when he was evil (that sounds strange ::eyes:: ). I mean I liked him as a vampire without a soul and a chip in his head. But the last seasons he became an angel-posing pseudo-vampire. Sorry for that directness. And yes, I do think Angel is the better one for Buffy. This proves the theorie that people who have watched Buffy since the beginning do not like Spike because he turns good. In contrary to people who have watched the serie since season 5 for example, they only know him as one of the good guys and so they like him.
It is similar with Riley. People who have watched since the beginning do not like him because he is the substitute for angel. The others do not know Angel and so they have no problem with Riley.
That's what I and some other persons I already disuss the subject think.

I started watching since the beginning, but my attitude towards Spike would've remained, because Season 5 is actually when I started to hate him.

As for the biographies, I dunno. I guess I would be somewhat confused.

I find that often people's favorite season of a show is the one when they first started watching. For example, I started watching Charmed in S1 and it will always be my favorite. I started watching Buffy, however, in S5; it is still my favorite season. I've gone back and watched all the older eps, but I just don't like them quite as much!

LightningR5, I have to disagree. I saw Spike as a bad guy and Angel and Buffy together first. I still like Spike better. I don't think it depends on what you see first. Just on the person and who they relate to better. I understand Spike's character more and that's why I could never see him as anything like Angel. Love Angel but the dude just doesn't have enough personality for me. I watched him first and never connected. I'm not saying he's a bad character I'm just saying that I can't relate to him as well as I can Spike. Kinda sounds like your saying that only true Buffy fans like Angel better. I know you probably didn't mean it like that. Not trying to start anything but that's just kinda how it sounded to me. Sorry, I respect your opinion and don't mean any disrespect to it but it just struck me that way.

Disagree with the first seeing theory. I started in S1 and I like S5 beter. On characters, I started with Willow as fav, but I added other characters to that list, and if it weren't for Willow changing along with the show she may not have been my fav anymore, though I don't like her as much as I did in S4/5.

You're right, Rayne, I did not want that it sounds that way. I did not want to say that this theory is 100% right and I do also respect any other opinions.
But I have the feeling that Spike became so popular because Angel has gone. He made room for Spike and so Spike got more screen time because he is now the alpha - male. And because of that many most younger people like him more than Angel first of all whom who started to watch in season 5 as I already have said.
He also would not have got a soul for Buffy's sake because he would have seen that she is happier with Angel and so he probably would not have turned good. It could be another reason some people like him because he turned good.
Just some attempts explain something.
But in the end everybody has his own opinion and his own attitudes to the caracters and I do not want to force somebody to think the same way as I do. It is also only my opinion.

Ok, well, fair enough. I honestly can't speak for why other people like who more. I just wouldn't say that as a general rule really. I'm not one of the younger ones and where I completely see what you're saying I'm still don't think I'd subscribe to the theory itself. I agree that Spike did get more screen time because Angel wasn't there but I don't think that Angel being there would have stopped Spike from feeling the way he did. It didn't with Dru and the way they trace it Spike was in love with Buffy back when Angel WAS in the picture...but that's all a debate that's kinda pointless to argue. Nah, even if I don't agree I totally respect your oppinion. Guess it just depends on the person. 🙂
