Yeah, you're probably right, it was probably because Russel was a vampire himself, and henceforth when Angel broke in, the rule didn't apply

You're bang on. They say a few times (I think it's later on in Angel) that vampires are free to enter the homes of demons. It's only humans they need an invitation for.

I do believe that's mentioned on both Buffy and Angel. Vamps can enter other demons homes/lairs or dwellings of those who have died.

All of that's true, but there's one more very important thing to consider. At that point in the show, Joss and his writers hadn't decided that Angel was going to be a vampire. Therefore the invitation rule for vampires wasn't an issue, and they either forgot once that decision was made or thought that the fans would,
