Huh, I'd never heard of that transcript. Totally different characterization for Kate, and yet somehow, the same.
I didn't think it was too dark though. Way darker things happen later on, in both shows.

Hm I can't really imagine Ats without Kate. She didn't have the biggest of parts but she still had meaning to driving the plots along at the start of the show. I always felt she had more potential as a character though and wasn't nearly used enough, or in the right way sometimes.
If she hadn't been in seasons 1 and 2 I imagine Joss and co would simply have had to invent some other connection at the LAPD for Angel to help/ask for favors from.

curiously in 'Lonely Hearts' when Cordy is saying she doesn't get Doyle and the visions and so on, she says something like "and your face goes all blooey ..." and he asks what she means but she ignores his question. So maybe she did know.
